Re: Adam Koralik explains the re-releases (4:3, audio etc)

The reason they give is "creative choice".. this random assumption makes them sound like they are so desperate to dispel negativity they'll just make stuff up. If they could have maintained the aspect ratio without visual issues it sounds more reasonable to assume they would have.

It's really not a 'random' assumption if you're a film buff and familiar with how auteur directors (a classification I'd say applies to Yu Suzuki in the realm of games) care deeply about their cinematography. They hate it when studios mess with the framing of their shots.

this video isn't going to help shut up all those naysayers

Nothing is going to shut them up. There's a negligible number of haters who will continue to try and rain on this parade no matter what. Meanwhile it's still going strong on the best sellers lists...

Re: Adam Koralik explains the re-releases (4:3, audio etc)

Ok... I agree with Adam in his new video that the guys that took the time to go back into the source code to get us the game on modern systems and in full 1080p deserve massive credit. It sounds like a very frustrating undertaking and I would shake the hand of every single one of the coders that did that. As I can't do that, the least I can do is buy the game right?

As for all the negativity surrounding the Shenmue HD Collection, I don't understand why people would show any kind of negativity towards this that were real fans. Is it a remake like Resident Evil 2... no. Is it 4K and/or 60fps like many modern releases... no. It doesn't matter. We are getting both games in an HD collection on modern systems. That in and of itself is enough to be excited over.

I think some may be forgetting that Shenmue fans right now are in the midst of an incredibly rare moment. The experience that we all love was cut short due to various reasons. 17 years after the last game released we are getting a full source code remaster of one of our favorite games/stories. Not only that but we are expecting it to finally continue with the third game releasing next year. Remember people... 4 years ago, the series was essentially dead. There was no reason to ever believe that we would get a remaster collection let alone a continuation to the story. We are getting both and from the success we're seeing, we could very well see Shenmue continue to completion. I don't believe I've ever seen or heard of another fanbase getting this kind of reboot to a favorite series.

Don't let the negative people online get you down. As a Shenmue fan... it's time to celebrate :!:

Re: Adam Koralik explains the re-releases (4:3, audio etc)

I don't think anybody is trying to suggest that these are the perfect dream ports of Shenmue.

Even I'll admit that there's stuff I wish they could have implemented. It'd be great to see 16:9 cutscenes. 4k? I'd love to play it on my 4k monitor. Obviously these things would make it a definitively better port; you'd be hard-pressed to find somebody who doesn't think this.

But are these problems enough to write off the entire port? I wouldn't say so. In the grand scheme of things some of these criticisms are fairly small. It's not like d3t and SEGA aren't putting effort into these ports. We could have had a lazily done emulated port with zero enhancements, but that's not the case. Things I rarely see the people who are overly saddened by these ports mention is features such as saving anywhere, both dubs, short loading times, modern controls etc. I'm not saying that people should ignore the shortcomings because there's good things too. But when you feign ignorance to these things and focus exclusively on the negatives then obviously you're going to be disappointed.

Do we deserve better? It's a tough one to answer. Technically we don't really deserve anything. Only a couple of months back getting any sort of remaster seemed like an impossibility with SEGA barely uttering a single word about Shenmue. Some are so quick to forget about this. I know that there are posters here who have never uttered a single positive thing about Shenmue, but even still, apply some context and realise that we're actually getting something pretty decent (albeit with a couple of shortcomings) instead of acting so ungrateful and demanding we have it better.

To summarise, I just don't get how people can get this upset over these ports and make SEGA and d3t out to be lazy and awful when what we're actually getting is going to be a well crafted, decent port (after many years of asking for it) with a few drawbacks.

Re: The "AI Battling" Stretch Goal

I don't really understand the sudden pullback from the campaign - well after the initial 6.3m push it has staggered for the last 2 years. How will not supporting the campaign now negatively effect sales? I thought considering the campaign was coming to a close that we'd encourage people to get involved. The idea of the 7million stretch goal was something to aim for, I jsut considered the more we put into this the more chance we have at Yu delivering the game he is content with. So now we're to just hold of as Deep Silver is going to cover everything? Just seems a little underwhelming that the community wants this campaign to fizzle out rather than end in a bang.

As for the Shenmue HD Remaster, I've bought 2 copies reluctantly due to it's technical limitations compared to previous HD Remaster releases on PS3/PS4 consoles.

There is no pullback from a campaign, because there was no campaign to begin with outside of a few fans like yourself posting an image and Wild Man of Boreno shouting at everyone to UP YOUR PLEDGES. UP YOUR PLEDGES!!!!!

As I've explained, 7 is nothing but a nice round number. On that point, they won't even end up with 7 million after accounting for PayPal fees as well as the cost of all those extra rewards you guys want people to up their pledges and get, so the figure of "7 million" is moot. Game development doesn't work like that. It's not as if Yu-san is sitting there with a 90% complete game, waiting to see if he hits 7 million and announce another delay, so they can develop and implement a brand new mechanical component. It would have been planned for, and incuded into their development schedule, so thinking along the lines of AI battling won't be in the game because 7 million is not achieved isnt the right way to think about it.

The era of crowdfunding this game passed long ago for us. The focus now has been the sales of the game at retail, and wether people agree or disagree on that is irrelevant. It's been stated by the Executive Producer of the game numerous times when asked about the future of the series being secured, and that's the advice we take.
We are at the point now where I would much rather see the headlines of "Shenmue 3 tops the European charts for the 4th week in a row", rather than, "Shenmue 3 hits 7 million and will include AI Battling - Future of Shenmue 4 uncertain at this point". It show on a public level that this game has support for future releases, which Yu Suzuki has said himself he needs.

I didn't ask for tell people not to up their pledge. People are free to do so. Go for it! I am just saying in terms of some huge push or campaign, there's no need for it, and it's not just the Dojo who feel that way. No one out there is organising anything. I will be buying add-ons also next week, but that's because I want copies for my collection etc, and as Spud said, with add one and upgrades, they will more than likely clear 7 million anyways.

Re: Anyone disappointed with Shenmue 3 cartoon-like graphics

Yu doesn't even play other games, for the precise reason that he doesn't want to be influenced by them and start following trends. While that may mean he has to reinvent the wheel on occasion, it at least ensures that everything we see is a "Suzuki solution" to whatever design challenge the game poses.

Battle System Expanded: AI Battling

This control system lets you automatically unleash the perfect technique in response to the opponent's positioning and distance. R&D for this system is based on Yu Suzuki's concept for players who are not used to fighting games or for those who want a full immersion battle experience. This battle system is highly compatible with, and will be an extension to the current battle system.

Re: Update #85: Survey Info #2: $7M stretch goal reached!

I'm back only for this post.

... Or a QTE prompt.

Could be a counter indicator, à la the Arkham series.
It's neither.

Looks like a lock-on indicator. There's also a forklift in the background, and what look like newspapers on the floor.

The move Ryo is doing looks really similar to Akira's Houken at 1 minute 54 in this video: https://youtu.be/B9jm6lbJj54?t=113
