Re: BlueMue's Shenmue videos

https://youtu.be/0KvaL80tyyM

This kind of comparison is something that I had on my mind ever since I got into capturing footage from real hardware. I always wanted to make side by side videos of actual gameplay and not just cutscenes as the real differences between the DC and Xbox version are found there. I hestitated doing this for so long because I wasn't quite sure how to play the game similar enough two times that the footage syncs. Well I tried something out and it worked better then I thought and it was good enough for a first release. When I eventually get to do this for other quarters I'll want to show more of the details and zoom in on them.

Re: Save transfer disc

I didn't know codebreaker could to this. But well, the file converter disc did its work well.

This has only been discovered recently by Sappharad.
I wouldn't really call it a 'discovery'. It wasn't something hidden that I happened to find. I disassembled the game and patched the logic that checks the save region so that it would allow any region. (The code changed is documented in the thread where I posted it, along with instructions how to patch it into the game so you don't need a cheat device for it.)
Someone could have done it back in 2001, but I guess nobody with the appropriate knowledge tried until late last year. It was on my wish list, so I finally went and did it.

Didn't mean to make you upset. Poor choice of words on my end. I wrote "discovery" as a quick hand way of saying that you created the patch. I didn't want to get too technical on my response to his post. Thanks for your work btw.

Shenmue 1 ultimate save file made!

I think this is the last time I ever play shenmue 1. I almost made my shenmue 1 ultimate save file on US version before but at the end of game I noticed I can't succeed the save file from US version because there is no shenmue 2 US version. That was a major pain. Now I have achieved this goal in the Eu version (I am not Japanese so playing the JP version doesn't make sense to me)

Here are some pics showing what I have done in this last try.

I obtained all the items that can be obtained in Shenmue 1 (Exclude few online featured items that are unavailable today, thank god they can be obtained in shenmue 2)

Re: Shenmue 1 and 2 widescreen hacks Dreamcast

Ok, I will give a little brief of how I did achieved widescreen on Shenmue II with virtually no clipping at all.
First off I must say that it come with its own tradeoffs, I will explain them later.

Ok, so I took a different approach to make Shenmue II widescreen, instead of changing the 3d matrix, to expand the horizontal view I did the opposite, I changed it to expand the vertical view, in orther to achieve widescreen without cropping the image top/bottom, I used the camera zoom value to put the camera further away, since the game renders everything "inside" the zoom camera area the end result is the game running in widescreen with zero clipping.

Top original widescreen hack, bottom new one, notice how now everything is rendered on the right and left of the image.

http://i.imgur.com/qaISlMX.jpg
[imghttp://i.imgur.com/jNQeJFw.jpg][/img]
http://i.imgur.com/FBJUUE8.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/1pqzMz3.jpg

Ok now the tradeoffs.

Cutscenes are not affected by the ingame zoom value, so the end result, while widescreen, is cropping the top and bottom of the image, I've been looking for a similar value for cutscenes with no luck so far. Anyway we can remove the black bars in orther to have the whole screen filled with the cutscene so givin us the same widescreen as the standard game but without those awefull bb, again, bad news, it seems that removing the BB requieres specific values for cutscenes, since the game does not use an universal addres for the BB.

http://i.imgur.com/WLXrtkR.png

So the game will display cutscenes like the top righ image.

Another tradeoff is that the game will lag more on Dreamcast since it is actually rendering quite a bit more geometry than with the previous hack.
So this will come in handy for those tha want to replay the game in widescreen with no clipping.

Place name titles (What's Shenmue)

I found this set of place name titles that were left on the What's Shenmue disk, referring to major locations in the full game.

While some of them are seen on loading screens of Shenmue I & II, some like the Ship were not used.

Guess we'll be seeing the last one in a year or two!

Re: Shenmue 3 on PlayStation 4

I upgraded my launch window model from the stock 500GB drive to a 1TB SSD/HD Hybrid drive, which improved load times for system boot and sometimes in games.

I did the same. 500GB was just not enough and I upgraded back in October just before the Uncharted Collection released. The most I have to watch now is my video captures of my Uncharted 4 matches. Every 2-3 weeks, I delete everything having uploaded the good stuff to YouTube. I generally end up with around 40-60GB of recordings every couple weeks in Uncharted 4 alone.

Is the Yu Suzuki really living in his office?

The Ryan Peyton interview suggested that Yu Suzuki is actually living in the office basically working 24/7 to ensure that

A. Shenmue 3 makes it's December 2017 release date
and
B. Shenmue 3 doesn't turn out like Mighty Number 9

I was wondering, it is just Yu Suzuki living at the office or is it also the rest of the team members?

Also maybe we could pitch in to help them out?

What if the Dojo members put some gift baskets together? We could include things like snacks, blankets, toiletries, reading material, basically anything to make living in the office more comfortable.

Thoughts?

Shenmue Dev Team Expanding - Leaflet Translation

Today (1st October) I want along to a single-day event in Yokohama for Unreal Engine put on by Epic Games, with the venue being Pacifico Yokohama, the same conference center where Yu Suzuki held the Shenmue Premiere so many years ago.

A number of talks on developing with Unreal were held through-out the day by companies such as Capcom and Square Enix, as well as exhibition booths and even a stall selling Unreal stickers and other merchandise.

But the main reason I was there was for to get my hands on this Shenmue leaflet:

http://i.imgur.com/PxVuekYm.jpg

Positions being advertised:

And I'm thinking this looks like a new image...? (Or is it recycled?)

I've put up a translation of the leaflet on my blog:

Zhai Xian Li's questions

I guess we all know about the old homeless man at the Freestay Lodge and the question about rivers that he asks.
But did you know that there is not just one but two more instances where he will ask Ryo a question that triggers the action selector?

I totaly stumbled across the first one recently and was pleaseantly surprise to find something new yet again.
Of course this sparked my interest in finding more and I dug through the files and found one more conversation.
Typicaly for Shenmue, for everything that you stumble across you'll have trouble figureing further things out.
It took time and different attempts until I got him to talk for the third one. That bum was always sleeping.
The solution was to make no progress at all and come back the next day. Too simple I guess...

Shenmue is like life. You always get something new to learn.

Shenmue 2 unused asset: map of Langhuishan village

It's probably well known that the onscreen maps that Ryo can buy in Shenmue 2 are stored as individual graphics files.

But it was quite surprising to find a map of a place where it's not possible to buy a map - the small port of Langhuishan in Guilin.

Map of Workers' Pier (used)
http://i.imgur.com/TSZSH6K.png

Map of Langhuishan (unused)
http://i.imgur.com/4moCckIm.png http://i.imgur.com/dqmJf3k.png

There are a few small differences in the location of some of the stalls and structures, although overall it's quite close to the actual location Ryo visits.

I used to assume that this map, which is shown when loading a Shenmue I save, was of the Yokosuka harbor, but it's actually Worker's and Fortune's Piers. To my knowledge, this specific one doesn't appear anywhere else in the game.

Re: No Shenmue 3 Until E3 2017!!!

We're not going to have to wait till E3. Unless something drastically changes, the next Kickstarter update will include the footage Peter and I saw on the bus. After Yu showed us the footage, he said everyone would be seeing it (and more) "in December." He never specified PSX, but Peter and myself clearly thought that's what he meant. The last $10,000 dinner was already confirmed for San Francisco on the week of PSX, so it seemed like a no-brainer. But this goes to show that we should never expect anything until we have 100% official facts, no matter how logical what we're expecting may seem. Let's keep a cool head and wait a few more weeks! We'll see this month's update sooner than usual, I'd imagine. The team should be afforded a good holiday break, so they won't even be there to update on the very last day again.

I'm kinda sure that's a Tulou in the background? I can't tell if they've literally whited out Shenhua's face or if that's a blown highlight. I don't believe it's the completed new model (sleeves don't look the right colour), but you'd hope if they're showing them again that work's been done. Shenhua's hair looks different from what I can tell so far, however.

Winter Heating in Japan | Shenmue Realism

Today's post on the Phantom River Stone blog looks at some of the realistic detail depicted in Shenmue relating to heating in the 1980s as the Yokosuka winter sets in. Traditionally-built Japanese house like Ryo's are not well suited for keeping the cold out (or the heat in), but ingenious devices such as the kotatsu help to make up for it.

Re: Shenmuehd.com Domain Registered

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but the domain registration is now private (it was yesterday when I finally saw the news too) so you can no longer see who owns it. You can't prove that Sega owns these at the current time, as they currently point at a registrar's parking page, although I trust that the previous information is genuine.

My other point to make, which I think has been mentioned already but seems to be ignored, is that they were registered on September 7th of last year and somehow not noticed until now. This alone is good reason not to expect that news is pending in the near future. We already heard from them that they were "looking into" it after those sites had already been registered.

The April release thing is extremely likely to be fake just to help this guy sell more goods at his store. If they were actually doing a physical release, it would have to be released to manufacturing next month. When something gets a physical release, not being announced in advance is not feasible from a sales standpoint. It would also show up in a ratings database (ESRB, etc.) if it was ready for manufacturing, which hasn't happened. A physical release would be nice, I'd buy it. But at this point the existing evidence is not credible.

So many great points! Very interesting that the domain reg is now private. I guess we will just had to do what we are best at doing guys, sit tight and wait lol. E3 is the most likely best time for Sega to drop this bomb. It's not that far away... Only 156 days, not that I'm counting ;)

Shenmue I, Shenmue II & What's Shenmue Widescreen HEX hack.

Hi I bring you an hex fix to patch a Shenmue I 1ST_READ.BIN/ISO/GDI/CDI.

This hex hack will make Shenmue display in Widescreen aspect ratio without clipping or glitches unlike NullDC extra geometry option or previous action replay codes, it will basically render the extra geometry necessary for 16:9 TV's.

The hack works great on emulators, as do on a real Dreamcast. (Click Show for download links)

Shenmue Realism: Bamboo Fountain in the Hazuki's Garden

I've written a post about the bamboo fountain in the corner of the garden at the Hazuki residence. It's just another part of Shenmue that doesn't have any role to play in the main story, but it adds so much to the atmosphere.

http://i.imgur.com/a9e2gkE.jpg

The ornamental pond in the corner of the garden at the Hazuki residence is an oasis of tranquility. Flowering water lilies bob gently on the surface, rising and falling as Japanese carp glide lazily by underneath. Birds twitter in the trees and the water trickles continuously into a bamboo water fountain.

Every so often, the bamboo spout of the fountain pivots over, spilling its collected water into the pond, and makes a distinctive "clonk" as it returns to its original position. The sound can be heard from other parts of the garden as Ryo walks around.

Let's look at how the fountain works, what its name is in Japanese and finally some in-game footage of the fountain in motion.

Re: Kickstarter Update #66 - Yu-san on story-building

Also, the fact that they're working on Saturdays tells me that they're still trying really hard to make December.
This is why I think, for now, December is still possible. I guess the logic at YSnet is that if they continue to haul ass and don't hit any major development problems, then they'll make it on time.

I think this may have been why the game was in prototype for over a year. They did a lot of heavy lifting in terms of demoing mechanics and locking down design goals while they had time on their side. Obviously that doesn't mean they finalised anything, but half the battle of game design seems to be knowing what you want, and knowing how to achieve it. That could be why Yu thinks it's possible to finish the game this year.

I guess an analogy of what I'm saying could be that it takes less time to get from A to B if you plan your journey ahead of time.

Re: Guilin is the best part of any game to me

I don't think it's a contest. Without Guilin Shenmue would be dead. If the game ended at Kowloon, who literally gives a shit what happens next. It's just a game where dude conquered and doesn't look inside himself, at all, and then rides into the sunset in the search for treasure. Pretty much every mystery in the series is grounded in Guilin. Who is Shenhua? What are the big stone mirrors for? What about the sword? What's with the cave? What's with Shenhua's powers? Ryo doing tai chi? A hint of him looking inside of himself and reconsidering his revenge? Who made camp before them, Lan Di? What about the Shenmie tree? It must have a significant role. Why does Ryo feel like he knows it? Are they siblings? Are they lovers? Is Shenhua a mystical being that has been reincarnated? Or is she hundreds of years old?

These mysteries and more, from three to four hours of one gameplay section.

No Guilin, no Shenmue III. Without Guilin who gives a fuck. It's just a generic - although fantastic - game where the hero wins at the end. Yawn.

Shenmue Dojo would have been dead by at least 2010 if Guilin weren't in II. What's there to talk about? Ryo beating Dou Niu? Without Guilin, if you beat disc 3 and it was the end of the game you'd probably think,"ah, I know how it ends. Ryo will beat Lan Di in the end, who cares." But Guilin changes the map, the stakes, and resets the board.

Without Guilin I don't see the fanbase give nearly as much of a shit about Shenmue. It'd have its fans and everything but it wouldn't have a fanbase grasping for something new as much as does now. It would have been a dead series like Suikoden or something.

Re: Shenmue 3 & E3 2017

It was NOT pushed back last PSX. Gio Corsi told me that they never planned to show it or had even discussed showing it with them.
That's not the word from the Japan dinner, where it was said explicitly or near-explicitly by the developers that they were aiming for PSX (this is the first hand information we've been told on here publicly by people like Peter, so I obviously cannot personally verify even if I do believe it to be true).

And as I've said before, these statements do not contradict each other. YSnet could have had PSX plans and killed them before they even spoke a word of them to Sony.

Re: Shenmue 3 & E3 2017

A new Shenmue III update came out! There some bad news though they confirmed Shenmue III won't be at E3 2017.

Shenmue III Update #67: Developer Room Update 3

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8hp91ItrnU

Dev Room Progress Report Vol. 3
Posted by Ys Net (Creator)
Greetings Everyone,

In this month’s update we present to you our third development report!
Who’s this new face…? Please check it out!

Thank you for watching and we hope you enjoyed it!
We have also been receiving questions from our backers regarding our plans to participate in upcoming game shows. While our schedule has yet to be finalized, we will be devoting June to game development and as a result, will unfortunately not be participating in any game shows. On the other hand, we look forward to bringing you our monthly updates and hope you do too!
Thank you!
From the Shenmue III Team

Re: Shenmue III Update #67: Developer Room Update 3

I had a problem with it looking cartoony as well, but then I realized that there's no lighting or detail at all on the model. Also, characters like the yakuza boss and Goro also looked somewhat cartoony despite the realistic aesthetic.

Re: Random Shenmue III Thoughts

The delay update was on the server for a day before it went live, which was waaaaaay longer than they've ever left anything on there.

There was a fear amongst Shenmue Dojo staff that the announcement would leak, so Awesome Japan were tipped off to the exploit.

Re: An analysis on The Gamescom Teaser

What are your thoughts?
I don't think Guilin will just be the first hour of the game. Maybe in a speed-run setting, but I feel like the information that we've been presented prior to now indicates there's going to be a lot of stuff to do in Bailu that introduces the game mechanics again as well as some of the new stuff.

We know some pieces already about the plot at the beginning of the game, for example
Ryo searching what I recall to be Shenhua's house after it had been broken into. Then there was the partially censored plot outline of the beginning that Switch or someone translated back in 2015, where we know that Ryo has to talk to someone in Bailu to learn more about the mirror and/or his father.
We've also seen them re-making the rock-jumping QTE, which could potentially be a way of them re-introducing QTE's. And we first saw the fishing area of Bailu all the way back in Feb 2016 from MAGIC. We also know Ryo could end up with a part time job in Bailu.

I think with all of the stuff that they need to re-introduce in Bailu they're going to need at least 2 days of in-game time for it. (~ 2+ hours) I suspect they're going to have at least one situation where you'll need to kill time (Ex: You need to talk to X, but he'll be back tomorrow.) to make sure that players understand there's a real day/night system. Shenmue 2 managed to do all of this very quickly, but I don't think they'd plan so much stuff for Guilin if you're only there for an hour.

I do agree that Choubu is probably the bulk of the game, but my thoughts are that you made Guilin sound shorter than it will probably be.

Very good points! Yes indeed I agree with the idea that Guilin will house a lot of gametime. I think maybe my position about the timing I spoke of was probably a little flawed indeed.
I think the shenhua's house broken into thing was from a post at shenmue500k but I remember someone, I think LanDC, shooting down the idea due to the house not looking exactly like Shenhua's. Although I think her house being broken into is def a possibility given the story disposition with her stepdad and lan di being in the area.
Now that you mention all this, I'm def on your side about the timing. I'm certain Shenmue 3 will be a long game anmd a good portion of it will take place in Guilin. Especially since Shenmue 2's ending was cut so short. I'm sure there is a lot more to be seen in that chapter.

Thanks for watching brotha!

Shenmue Dojo interview with Yu Suzuki (Gamescom 2017)

https://68.media.tumblr.com/c76cd8e09ccbe5c284a877f39c982a54/tumblr_ovoeetc4Sy1vilcqco1_400.jpg

At the Gamescom 2017 event, we were very lucky to have a quick interview with Shenmue 3 director Yu Suzuki. Unfortunately, over the 3 days available with Suzuki-san, it was very hard to secure an interview with the team due to the general media already having pre-booked all of the time slots available with Suzuki-san through their new publishing partner, Koch Media. But thanks to a few people behind the scenes (especially the community's own Shenmue Ambassador Ali Novin!), we were able to be squeezed in for some quick interviews at the end of the final day, and got to experience the Deep Silver media area! (and rub shoulders with other developers in the area. 5 points to who can guess the developer in the chequed shirt.) Possibly a happy accident, but quite hilarious that Shenmue 3 was allocated Wareho...errr room number .08!

For this interview, we are unbelievably thankful, as both Suzuki-san and Harry-san were understandably extremely tired, and in light of that, our time with them was very short. Despite having upwards of 20+ questions prepared, i only had time to ask a very short number so apologies in advance that i did not get an opportunity to ask a lot of gameplay based questions. I didnt get to that stage, and before i was out of the "introductory" questions stage, it was time to wrap up the interview! Either way, its always an honour to be in the company of Suzuki-san, and we are so grateful for his time at Gamescom. Enjoy :)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SD. So hello Suzuki-san. Welcome to Germany! Have you been to Germany before? Have you been to Gamescom before?

YS. It’s my first Gamescom, but however, for Germany, I don’t remember… 2 or 3… around 3 times. I have a feeling the number grows with each interview (laughs)! It’s around 5 times… I think. Although, just before when you asked the question, I said twice! But I think 5 times is the right number.

SD. So we know you are in Cologne for Shenmue, but I know you have a love for art and architecture. Do you have any plans to do any sight-seeing whilst you are here?

YS. On the day we arrived, or maybe the day after, I went to see the Dom (Cathedral). It’s splendid! I also walked around the Old Town. Yes, it was amazing. It was more impressive than the Tokyo Tower (laughs). I am joking! But it was amazing. I could say amazing over and over.

SD. We are at Gamescom for Shenmue 3. But I have to ask, why Gamescom? We just had E3, and Gamescom is a little bit after, so did it just feel right?

YS. The reason for the timing was that I wanted to make the announcement in conjunction with the forming of the contract with Deep Silver. The agreement, to put it simply, was not ready in time for E3.

SD. Ok, so I just want to bring it back a bit, to the Kickstarter update where you announced that you had to delay the game. How hard was that decision, and were you worried about disappointing the backers?

YS. Hmmm, yes of course. I was most concerned about the backers. At the time, we had already made progress in our partnership talks with Deep Silver. So for us, being able to aim for something above what had been the plan with the original Kickstarter, it would have been extremely difficult to implement an open world with the initial plan we had at the time of the Kickstarter. So I continued to look for a partner after that. I really wanted to create an open world somehow. So I kept searching, and eventually we were able to form a partnership with Deep Silver which enabled us to upwardly revise the plan.
So at that time, I took into account what we would be able to achieve with Deep Silver. I felt positive we would be able to achieve a “scaled-up” Shenmue 3. If conditions improved after forming a partnership with Deep Silver, we would be able to expand our plans. That would bring along with it more tasks to complete, and I hoped to announce the good news to everyone along with the schedule change. But at that point the contract with Deep Silver hasn’t been finalized, so I wasn’t able to mention it. That was the situation.

SD. In the same video, you mentioned “new technologies, possibilities and new expressions” for Shenmue 3. Could you tell us more about those, and have they changed what you originally thought Shenmue 3 would be like?

YS. We have a complete set of basic shaders, although these need to be tuned for Shenmue. But having a full set of basic shaders is one of its (Unreal 4 Engine) advantages. Also it’s an engine designed for games, so there are all sorts of libraries for 3D games. So when you’re at the prototype/building stage, it’s very quick and efficient. That’s another benefit.
With Shenmue 1 and 2, my program forms the base, so I understand all parts of the program. However this time, the innermost working are a “black box” so I can’t obtain a full understanding of every part, and that can sometimes be a problem. From an overall perspective, it’s a really marvellous engine, especially when it’s used by multiple people. For example, we take the case of 30 or 40 people, or more, are developing the game simultaneously. It can handle management and so on, and do things like analysing the workload, rendering load, CPU usage and various others. Product management has also been made easier too, so overall, I think it’s a superb engine.

SD. I’m glad you mentioned shaders because I remember a conversation we once had about how important the colours of Shenmue were important to you. How difficult has it been to achieve the “look” and “colour” of Shenmue with Unreal 4?

YS. The basic attractive colours in Unreal 4 are formed with High Dynamic Range, and there is a wide range of colours from light to dark which can produce images where you can really feel the light and shade. This was the key deciding factor for my selection of the Unreal Engine. For me, the light and the shade are the most important part. For Shenmue, there are 2 things which are necessary to add. The next stage is there has to be a feeling of humidity. Shenmue has to have a slightly “wet” feeling to it. A damp kind of feeling in the air. I don’t mean actual rain, but the air should have a kind of moist feeling to it.
It’s difficult to achieve this with the standard Unreal 4 shaders, so I think we will have to write our own. The Shenmue teaser we have shown has achieved that look of “wetness” I think. We have now reached the second step. We are not yet at the third stage, but that will be images that you can smell. For example, in China they may chop up a pig like this, and then, without storing it in a refrigerator, sell it under the hot sun. It has that kind of raw stink, and that’s something I think we managed to achieve in Shenmue 2. Shenmue 3 will also be going onto this stage next. A “smell shader”, or a “stinky shader”! (laughs).

https://68.media.tumblr.com/9d51b582086d5bd4cb64552253c54f48/tumblr_ovoeetc4Sy1vilcqco5_400.jpg

SD. I have a lot of questions to ask, but I know time is very short, so I will ask my final question. With being president of your own company, you have hired new staff members to work on Shenmue 3. How does it feel to pass on all those years of knowledge and experience to young new developers? Have you had any difficulties managing a team like this?

YS. Well not all of our staff are young, there is someone who is 50 years old… all ages really. But management is the most difficult part. They have entered the company going through interviews, and it’s hard to get to know someone properly at the interview stage. So after that process it turns out there are some people who speak extremely little, for example, so yes it can be pretty difficult. Various strategies are needed in order for each person’s performance level to reach 100%, and that’s the part that’s most difficult. I would prefer to lose myself in the creative work, but quite a bit of time is used up on management.

SD. Suzuki-san, thank you.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

...and in the blink of an eye, it was all over! Apologies again that we could not have had more time to ask more questions, but there maybe more inverviews coming out from the Shenmue Online Community in the near future with lots more questions so stay tuned for that! ;-)

But before we left, as always, we had to surprise Suzuki-san with a gift! Thanks to a fantastic idea from 500k owner Aaron Barstow, we decided to try and somehow put Suzuki-san into one of his favourite bands, Van Halen. So working together, we came up with the idea of having an artist design an image of the band members but also insert Yu Suzuki in amongst them! After contacting one of our contributors to the Instagram page, @r_wuying, he understood the concept, and very quickly came though with an awesome piece of work!

https://68.media.tumblr.com/0909930dd8da47c5b51aaf4011880926/tumblr_ovoeetc4Sy1vilcqco6_400.jpg

Of course, we couldnt give Suzuki-san an image on a PC, so we had it framed and brought it to Germany to present it to him from all of the Shenmue Community, for which he was extremely surprised and thankful (as always!)

https://68.media.tumblr.com/5d4165cea5becd3cdfd3c367fa97797f/tumblr_ovog4lS9W61vilcqco1_400.jpg

My Gamescom experience was one i will always remember, and i have to say thank you to so many people including David and Kenji from Shenmue Master, Aaron and James from 500K/Team Yu, Silvia from 500k, Chao from the community and of course Ali Novin for all his hard work behind the scenes to make the interview happen. On a personal note, it was fantastic to meet long time Dojo members YS, Snoopbob, B-Ren and Bluemue at the event too!! Its a shame we couldnt have all spent more time together! Also, of course how could I forget (which I did  ) the amazing Switch for being on point with translating duties as always!

But with that, another event has ended, and the long journey continues! See you all again soon :D

Re: Random Shenmue III Thoughts

I found it interesting that they plan to use the old assets for flashback scenes. ... Also, if Sega does remaster the first two and they do look better, it would be odd then if 3 has un-updated asserts for the flashbacks. I wouldn't mind seeing the first two games rebuilt to match 3, but that's not really feasible if they want to release them in order.

"Assets" is a general term, so we don't know for sure what Yu Suzuki was referring to. He might have meant the old models as you're imagining, but he might have also meant the mocap/character animation data that could be applied to newer models. Assuming they still have the files with the character rigs from the older games then it would be relatively easy to bind them to new character models.

Corey Marshall currently set to record VO in late May

Thanks to mjq jazz bar for finding this out. It seems to have slipped through the net.

A few days ago Corey posted a status on Facebook, and a fan asked him when VO recording for the English dub begins. Corey replied that currently the plan is for him to begin in late May.

While it's possible things could slip, seems the intention is to begin recording ASAP.

Re: Shenmue 1 & 2 game developers

I've been following the studio for almost a year now and I fell in love with them, so much so, that I wish I had some sort of talent or skills to have a career in game development because I would happily relocate and apply for a post at their company.
The biggest compliment i can give them is their treatment of staff. Every month they have various team building exercises, as well as awards for individual staff members hitting various milestones, such as time spent with the studio, achieving new qualifications and positions etc. Honestly it looks like a fun place to work, but at the same time, extremely professional. As the OP said, they were involved with The Witcher 3 and we all know of the success of that game, but they are also involved in a lot of other great pieces of work, as well as having a good relationship with Sega from their Mega Drive collections.

It's also interesting to note they are a Keywords company, who own Lakysha Digital, who are involved with the development of Shenmue 3. Any sort of cross development between the two certainly wouldn't be too difficult to achieve. But yea, I've had good vibes from them from when I first heard of them, and outside of the major players such as Bluepoint, I couldn't be happier Shenmue HD is in their hands.

Concerns about Shenmue HD.

I have many but there is one that has hitted me hard with the video announcement.

Some of you may remember that I did some Widescreen hacks for Shenmue I & II, while I was at it I noticed, that during some custcenes, since characters aren't supposed to be seen they are frozen until they enter the supposed "viewable" area or they just simply pop out from nowhere or in some cases they just do some ramdom animations.

This happens a lot during Shenmue I and II, from the video below I've noticed that every single scene that corresponds to a cutscene its cropped to 4:3, so instead of tweaking the game they are doing the poorest and fastest of the ports.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=43&v=jPtlofIccAk

My expectations are really low, even the official screenshots that have been posted on STEAM look worse than some emulations shots we all have been seen here.

Don't get me wrong I am happy that the games are getting a new life, but I guess SEGA's porpuse is to somehow reignite (no pun intended) the franchise but with such a poor job they will achive the opposite, and only us the hardcore fans will buy this.

Re: Concerns about Shenmue HD.

While I agree, the Xbox version looks stunning emulated at 4k.

It already looks better than the HD port imho.
