Re: Playing Shenmue I and II on new tvs

A guy over on TheIsoZone recommended this converter/upscaler from Sewell. He also made a video on it.

As for a VGA box, I've been very satisfied with the $25 one I bought from Retro-Bit. Unfortunately, it's not in stock on Amazon anymore and it's $60-70 on eBay. I swear I got mine for $25 back in July.

Do you think there will be a "Neo" version of the game too? Maybe with 60fps support.

Re: Shenmue 3 on PlayStation 4

Although I agree with the recommendation of waiting for the new model to be announced (it will be out before Shenmue 3) I don't think you should worry about the hard drive size.

Just like the PS3 that it succeeded, the hard drive in the PlayStation 4 is user replaceable. I upgraded my launch window model from the stock 500GB drive to a 1TB SSD/HD Hybrid drive, which improved load times for system boot and sometimes in games. If it's feasible for you, you can buy the cheaper one and upgrade the hard drive yourself later. If you're unsure what hard drives will work, look for laptop drives and check the reviews somewhere like Amazon. Upgrading PS4 hard drives is very common, and many of the popular ones will have reviews from people who mention putting the drive in a PS4 and whether the drive worked for them.

Re: Why is Shenmue 1 so different to the sequel?

It's simple.

Shenmue 1 is supposed to feel like home. Safe and secure.

Shenmue 2 is supposed to feel like you are going out into a new world you do not understand. This sets up the story itself.

Shenmue 3 will be about visiting a world that makes you feel internally about yourself.

I don't understand why people till this day can not understand that concept.

The feeling of the games directly relates to the story that is going on...

Re: Shenmue 3 on PlayStation 4

If you’re in no hurry to get the system now, OP, you might as well wait until the holiday season (if not longer) before making your purchase.
By then the standard PS4 will prob, have gotten even cheaper (with larger hard drives), and the Neo will have come out.

Yokosuka wrote: Wait the PS4 Neo before.

I would be careful though since it didn't sound in interviews as if it's totally sure that the Neo will support all PS4 games. There was some discussion about that on Neogaf.

I did the same. 500GB was just not enough and I upgraded back in October just before the Uncharted Collection released. The most I have to watch now is my video captures of my Uncharted 4 matches. Every 2-3 weeks, I delete everything having uploaded the good stuff to YouTube. I generally end up with around 40-60GB of recordings every couple weeks in Uncharted 4 alone.

DoriMaga Feature Part 2: The World of Shenmue (Jan 1999)

Here is the second translated installment of the January 1999 edition of the Dreamcast Magazine, which contained a multi-part feature on Shenmue . The theme of Part 2 is "The World of Shenmue".

http://i.imgur.com/tPiMPntt.png

Background to the article : as part of the build-up to the release of Shenmue, and following on the heels of the Shenmue Premiere event that had been held the previous month in Yokohama, the Japanese Dreamcast Magazine ("DoriMaga") published this 16-page special report covering various aspects about what could be expected with the as-yet unreleased Shenmue.

The feature consists of these parts:
Part 1. Shenmue Premiere Event (previously translated here)
Part 2. The World of Shenmue (this post)
Part 3. The Hero and Other Characters (future post)
Part 4. It's Magic! Special Effects and Production (future post)
Part 5. Interview with Yu Suzuki (future post)

Shenmue’s Most Distinctive Feature: Its Immense Play Area!

Here's what Yu Suzuki has to say about Shenmue’s new genre, FREE (an acronym of "Full Reactive Eyes Entertainment"): "It imposes fewer constraints than the games of the past, and lets you play as you want and without stress. It’s about making sure anyone can get through the game smoothly, without being frustrated - that’s what I wanted to create. Even a 10-year old can play. When the boundaries between generations and countries are overcome, people from all over the world can share the emotion of its themes, and feel as if they have experienced a different life from their present one. To put it another way, I want to give the player a complete, self-contained world."

A World Whose Creation Has Spanned 3 Years

This game is the product of 3 years spent by SEGA’s top developer, Yu Suzuki, after taking on the challenge of creating an RPG. The project got underway in secret in 1996 at AM2’s research department as development was in progress on Virtua Fighter III, a game greatly anticipated by all game players. Things took shape steadily, and a massive number of image boards were created in the construction of the world. Work on Yu Suzuki’s masterpiece came to be known by the code name " Project Berkley ". And now, at last, the time has come for the veil to be lifted.

Yu Suzuki’s goal with the game is the "creation of a huge world" - nothing less than a reconstruction of the real world. Something that’s easy to say, but for a game to take ordinary, everyday things and recreate them before our eyes is one of the most difficult challenges. For that reason, in games before now objects have always been symbolized or simplified: the symbol of a castle; a 3D sandbox world that lacks authenticity; badly-shaped characters... It’s only natural to question why this has become the accepted method of expression in conventional RPGs. Yu Suzuki took this as his starting point, along with a vast and complete world. Indeed, Yu Suzuki took the concepts everybody had taken for granted and made them his point of departure. Upon seeing the world that Yu Suzuki has created, players will surely catch their breath.

Above: One of the locations in Shenmue: the bewitching capital of Hong Kong. Kowloon City, standing in the evening sun, may be a town that best reflects the impressive scale of the game. Enclosing all kinds of people, this giant city is a complicated tangle, forbidding access to outsiders...
※ All images are work-in-progress.

The May 21st Dreamcast Demo:
Was “The Tower of Babel” a Glimpse of Things to Come?!

21 May, 1998: at the Dreamcast event, along with demonstrations presented by Mr Irimajiri [the then-CEO of Sega] , a demonstration video of "The Tower of Babel" was shown. It is said to have been put together by three staff members in just ten days. This demo bears a striking resemblance to the walled city of Kowloon in Shenmue. What would have been produced if three years had been spent in the creation of the city? The answer to that is: Shenmue.

http://i.imgur.com/7ODFYxJ.png
Above: from above, countless stores and houses surround the huge tower. Creating something like this in a period of just 10 days is now within the realm of possibility.

http://i.imgur.com/rgFjKbtm.png http://i.imgur.com/sSiJARfm.png?1
Left: this is how it looks viewed from afar: one large island. Right: going in closer, the detail in the work can be appreciated. Is this the kind of world that will exist in Shenmue?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4fAbTrhvto

http://i.imgur.com/k401lnil.png
Above: this is where the protagonist of this game lives, the area of Yokosuka. With its slightly retro feel, the town feels more than a background to an RPG - the sense of realism shown in this screenshot makes it easy to believe that it actually exists: the aerials on the houses, the power lines, the store signs and post boxes... Just as in the real world, the player can navigate around using them as landmarks when navigating around.

http://i.imgur.com/ir8XYAUl.png
Above: in stark contrast is the landscape of Hong Kong. The player will realize immediately just by observing the differences in the city’s appearance that they are in a different country. It is as if an entire world exists there. A boundless expanse awaits the player.

"A system that can be enjoyed at any age, where simplicity and depth stand side by side; a realistic world with fine attention to detail enticing you to see what’s around the next corner; a space that feels real. These are the kinds of things I wanted to create." Just from this brief glimpse of the stage on which Shenmue is set, Yu Suzuki’s thoughts can be clearly understood. However, Yu Suzuki isn’t content with just creating a realistic world: "A story and experience that will leave players with lasting memories". We mustn’t forget this crucial aspect of the game. To put it another way, the purpose of constructing this great world was to evoke such emotions. What sights will be in store for you in this vast world?

http://i.imgur.com/4IaP4R7l.png
Above: the Hong Kong cityscape, a sight familiar also to Japanese. One of a number of cities in Asia said to boast a million-dollar night view, the gaudy signs of its shopping district will no doubt leave an especially strong impression. In Shenmue, such views of Hong Kong city are faithfully reproduced, down to the last detail. Those who see it will be amazed!

The protagonist’s name: Ryo Hazuki!!

China’s expansive history and vast lands spoke to Yu Suzuki’s heart. At first, in order to give the world consistency, only the theme music was created, and this helped to fan his imagination. Then, two years ago, in order to flesh out the visual images, a CG movie was created. That movie was the one seen in places such as the Virtua Fighter 3tb special disk and the TV commercial for the premiere event.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tu86tlnFLVE

However Suzuki says that the creation of the most important character, the protagonist, turned out to be much more difficult than he had been expecting; recently, it has at last been firmed up.

The main character’s name is Ryo Hazuki. A Japanese youth, he pursues the mystery of his father’s death, setting out on a journey to a country in the west he has not laid eyes upon before: China. What awaits him there?

http://i.imgur.com/Wc0E7Kkl.png
The main protagonist, Ryo Hazuki, revealed at the premiere event. He was modelled in 3D using an actual plaster bust. Having lost his mother when he was a child, Ryo’s childhood days were passed training under the strict instruction of his father. Although reckless and with a quick temper, he has a strong conviction. He is the main character of the game.

Is this really a game?! A fully-interactive world using no pre-rendered movies. The town, the rooms, the people... everything, even the dogs and cats, are drawn to full scale!!

Shenmue: a townscape that has been crafted to reproduce the real world in fine detail; and among the development staff, there are even a few hallucinatory souls who ask themselves if this is truly a game.

The townscape that has been crafted is not a spurious sandbox; you can round corners following a smoothly-curving path, and if there are obstacles in the way your pace will automatically slow as you avoid them. In other words, if there is somewhere that you want to go, it’s just a matter of pressing a direction button.

Pressing Up moves you foward; Down and you turn around. If you press Left you move to the left; if you press Right you move to the right. Furthermore, if there is something you wish to look at, you don’t need to come to a halt. Just press the analog stick in the direction you wish to look as you walk along. Indeed, just like in real life, you can search for signs that show the way, or look up at a building while you walk. It’s also possible to look down as you move, and search for dropped items on the ground. Players can go where they want, looking at what they want. Naturally, the controls are simple even for a child. One of the main features is that everything has been made to be user-friendly.

http://i.imgur.com/SWbrHKkm.png http://i.imgur.com/3yPqzBXm.png
Above: in the world of Shenmue, there is no disconcerting switch to a movie scene, with the commonly-seen obvious change in graphics quality. All scenes are created and displayed on the fly.

Furthermore, in Shenmue there are many characters who don’t have a direct connection to the development of the story. People who helpfully tell you the way to go, people who hurry past you and in-your-face road-side vendors. The player can progress through the game without having to converse with all the characters, just as in the real world. Of course, a quick conversation might turn out to give you an unexpected clue. If you are lost, or don’t know what to search for next, just as in the real world you can try asking people at the wayside.

http://i.imgur.com/OL49lS9.png
Above: the inhabitants are rendered in high-quality, real-time CG, and the story unfolds seamlessly – just as if in the real world.

The Story Starts in the Winter of 1986, in Yokosuka!

The setting for Shenmue is Yokosuka. Yu Suzuki comments regarding the time period: "I’m planning to have the story start in Yokosuka, in the winter of 1986. That’s something that probably won’t change". When asked the reason for choosing Yokosuka as the setting: "There’s not really any great reason per se, but I wanted to use a town in Japan with a bit of character – like Kamakura, Kurashiki or Kyoto. Even now there are towns brimming with the atmosphere of Japan. Yokosuka and its surroundings feel right: somewhat exotic and out-of-the-ordinary. And the time period that I thought was the most Yokosuka-like goes back 10 years, to around 1986".

Suzuki says that under the scenario currently created, the setting for the first chapter will be around Yokosuka, where the main protaganist Ryo Hazuki grew up. With Yokosuka as its departure point, the world of Shenmue will gradually expand out. The size of this world is bound to exceed our expectations.

http://i.imgur.com/O6NDdmR.png
Above: the atmospheric streets of the suburbs around Yokosuka. The historic Hazuki dojo, also the home of Ryo Hazuki, and its surroundings together with the area of Shin-Yokosuka harbor make up the setting of Chapter One.

http://i.imgur.com/ei3AuNq.png
Above: once you have become somewhat familiar with the area of Yokosuka, the setting moves to Hong Kong. The recreation of the complicated buildings is remarkable, its composition serving to give a sense of height.

http://i.imgur.com/r1Vr6no.png
Above: the people there carry out their lives just as in the real world. Don’t hesitate to have a chat with them.

Answers to Our Quiz

Aerials

In the December 25 [1998] edition of Dreamcast Magazine, we showed you pictures of several aerials. So what meaning did they have?
http://i.imgur.com/rdOGyAT.png
http://i.imgur.com/SrND7kh.png
Here’s the explanation: the huge environment that has been created for Shenmue is not merely large in size, but has been built with an insane level of detail. Aerials are one such example. Aerials have been recreated and placed throughout the expansive town, with each one a shape different from the next. This result of this ludicrous amount of effort is that the world in which the player moves feels realistic, giving the illusion of being in the real world. Indeed, a "world" really does exist there!

Animals

We showcased these animals in the December 18 [2015] edition of Dreamcast Magazine.
http://i.imgur.com/JsQKPuV.png
Yu Suzuki has this to say about them: "My aim was for a game where everything develops at full scale – while the player moves around, animals like dogs and cats will also appear at full scale." "I think something interesting can be done using these animals." Let’s wait to play the game to find out what he means.

General Shenmue Box Protector Thread

Hello.

I wanted to make a concrete thread on box protector sizes for Shenmue, Shenmue 2, US Shenmue, What's Shenmue, etc.
I could not find a central location for this info. As a collector, it would be nice to have some sort of reference guide.

I could not find all of the sizes for a complete Shenmue variant list so I would like everyone to provide any info they have. Thanks! :)

Note: The sites linked are just people I bought from. I do not own these companies or anything like that.
----
What is a box protector?
A box protector is what it is called. Some sort of item that will protect a game box/case.
----
Why would I want them?
Shenmue games are inevitably going to get more expensive as the years go on. These will help keep em safe!

Re: Random Shenmue Thoughts

About the leaves part, no I didin't struggle, I did it second try. My point it that the game is not going to be fun. I understand how Shenmue is supposed to be like but I'd rather it be more like a video game that can get mainstream appeal. It should be fun to play for crying out loud else it will really get hit hard by other games that release at the same period. Then we will look stupid

Yea you sort of missed the point of the series, and what makes it so fun, as well as engrossing. If you want a game that treats its world like a playground, instead of a real, breathing world, the Shenmue games aren't for you or anyone with that mindset.

I can assure you, when me, and many people play/replay the games, we are never dreading sections like the forklift job, and book carrying, infact they are rather fun in their own rights.

All the things Ryo has to go through also translates to the player, which is a huge factor in why the Shenmue games leave such a lasting impression.

If Shenmue 3 is to succeed it must remove all bullshit like this

https://i.ytimg.com/vi/rt87ApHfuM4/maxresdefault.jpg

And this

http://thisismyjoystick.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/Forklifts-ahoy1.jpg

You've clearly missed the point of the entire series. The Shenmue games are about Ryo's transition to manhood, and his growth as a martial artist. Things like the forklift job and crate and book carrying are there to teach the player (and Ryo) about patience and discipline. I'd bet you had a lot of trouble catching the leaves at Man Mo Temple.

DoriMaga Article: Shenmue takes Best Title award (Mar 2000)

I've just finished a translation of an article from the Japanese Dreamcast Magazine back in March 2000, in which they announced their own "Grand Prix" awards for various Dreamcast software categories. This was a time when Shenmue had recently been released to wide acclaim.

Shenmue scooped the trophy for Best Title (out of all software released for the Dreamcast until that time) and there is an award acceptance interview with Yu Suzuki and Keiji Okayasu.

http://i.imgur.com/uacOBTCl.png

Here's a link to the blog post:
http://www.phantomriverstone.com/2016/09/shenmue-wins-best-dreamcast-title.html

One comment from Keiji Okayasu that I thought was quite revealing was when he says he thinks Shenmue II development will go "more smoothly than the previous game", hinting at the magnitude of effort and management complexity involved with getting the first Shenmue out the door.

Shenmue featured in several other awards also, so I'll translate these further parts in the future.

By the way that big fat ugly guy is called Dou Niu, with u 's at the end. He is the head of a criminal mafia organization but it's not the Cosa Nostra. So he isn't a "Don". No offense but I'd wanted to get this off my chest as it's a common mistake / typo that people love to make.
Snap, I totally goofed on that. Childhood phonetic mispronunciation coming back to haunt me. I thought I kicked the habit when I realised his name is a Romanised version of "Big Ox" or whatever, but I guess not.

I wouldn't worry too much. There is high potential that one of the games can't meet the release window.
And even if they do arrive at the same time Shenmue III sits comfortably in it's niche and won't be affected very much by it's surroundings.

It means basically nothing.

End of year is a big game releasing/buying period, and Shenmue III's release window was chosen with that in mind. The games run in different circles and demographics anyway, and I can't imagine in any world in which they would somehow siphon sales from each other.

December is the time of year when a lot of people buy a lot of games because of Christmas. There is no better time of the year to sell video games. That's why a lot of companies schedule their releases in November and December. That's no reason for Ys Net to shy back and postpone their game. On the contrary: Ys Net should make an effort not to miss the Christmas business.

Re: The New Combat System

A lot of what Yu is saying is not that different from the ethos that made Shenmue's fighting engine different from VF in the first place. Shenmue's combat is slower and more cinematic than VF's, so we shouldn't assume Yu's comments on furthering that aspect to mean that the depth is being stripped out.

In fact, it's kind of the opposite. Being able to divide and conquer groups of enemies adds a strategy element to the fights, as will the improved combat physics allowing the environment to be used to slow them down or stop them entirely. This could give the combat more depth than ever before, regardless of simplified core controls.

I think it's best to wait to see it in action, and most of all, to not be afraid of change.

Re: The New Combat System

I wouldn't say Shenmue's combat is slower than VF, more cinematic? Yes, since it doesn't have juggles and what not... But slower? I think they're just about the same speed.

The stuff Suzuki is saying sounds like radical changes, and not just slowing the game down just a notch. I'm worried that simplification of inputs will wipe away the satisfaction from pulling off complex moves or precisely timed counters... Imagine if an enemy attacks you, and then time slows down and a QTE prompt appears to execute a counter, that is completely unsatisfying IMO and too much of that will make fights a drag...Of course, this is just a scenario I came up with in my head, I agree that we should wait and see how it pans out, Suzuki is a genius after all... But doesn't mean we can't speculate and discuss the possibilities of what "Battle QTE" might turn out to be.
I don't know, VF can get a lot quicker than Shenmue. Even Shenmue II's combat which was a few notches faster than the original is a hair or two behind VF speeds. Well, unless you're playing super defensively/turtling up.

The problem with speculation is that we've really started the thread off with worst case hypothetical scenarios. With most information about the combat being months old, and having not seen a scrap of it since the game got funded, we'll probably just look for an imaginary boogey man and get ourselves worked up over something that may not happen.

What I'm trying to get at is, a lot of what you're saying R.E simplified controls and counters could be applied to the differences between VF and the original Shenmue combat. Shenmue has the X & A auto combos and a fairly forgiving counter/deflect window that uses a single button press, as opposed to VF just having a block button and relying on the player to maneuver and outwit their opponent to counter.

To assume a lack of depth right now is unfounded. Assuming the worst doesn't quite make sense, when there's actually a lot of consistency in what Yu has said when applied to how the original Shenmue combat was designed compared to VF.

I feel we might fall on opposite sides of the coin on this one regardless, so that's all I've really got to say about this regarding whether simplifying combat might work out or not.

-----

I've got other areas of speculation regarding combat, though.

Like how the divide and conquer mechanics may work when applied to indoor and outdoor areas of battle. Yu did suggest the communal kitchen area of a Tulou might be a good arena for a fight, so I can already imagine a scenario where a fight breaks out in the narrow upstairs areas and Ryo has to lead enemies down into the courtyard to prevent getting surrounded at close quarters.

I also wonder how the Kung Fu Mastery stretch goal(s) have been/would have been applied. I had a theory they tied into the Skill Tree System in some way, and through the game you could start experimenting with different forms of martial arts and change up some of the basic Hazuki-style moves like we saw in II, but in a more involved way that changed your stances, your normal punches/kicks/throws, etc.

There's also the question of whether weapons may factor in. Ryo probably won't use them, but enemies already have in the series and I could see that element being expanded upon.

I'd be surprised if Ryo couldn't do any of his old moves. Shenmue 1 moves carried over to 2.

I expect someone's work at the studio would be to import all the moves from 1 & 2 to 3.

Re: The New Combat System

You're probably thinking of the regular Dodge > Grab or Punch counters, while I was thinking of moves like Counter Elbow Assault and that move you learn from Chen at the end of Shenmue 1. Those kind of moves have much tighter execution window, and I wonder about their place in this new Battle QTE system. Will they still require precise timing, despite Suzuki saying he'll shift focus away from the VF style of combat to something more strategic? Something that requires thinking as opposed to fast reactions? That's what I'm worried about... We've got little to go on about, true, but I wouldn't say the assumptions and speculations are unfounded. It's pretty clear it's going to be a lot different than what came before, they even said players will have to re-learn the combat with Shenmue 3, that sounds like a radical change to me.

Also, I don't think lack of depth is my only concern. It could have depth, but a different kind... Like you've said, the depth could be focused on other elements, like strategic positioning and making use of environments, but I wouldn't trade that kind of depth with what we had in previous games, pulling off hard to execute, but powerful moves and counters was extremely satisfying, and IMO, that's the crux of every good combat system: If the fighting itself, the inputs, don't feel satisfying, the other meta elements like crowd-control or environmental damage won't make up for it, regardless of how deep they can get.

And if "Battle QTE" plays out like how I imagined it, I'm gonna be bummed. I've got a question, how do you think this Battle QTE will turn out to be? You think it's just a slower free battle? What about the implementation of QTEs?
I think it's all just a case of waiting to see what they've got to show. The only thing we know for certain is that the combat will be different, and that's about it.

It's worth pointing back to the DualShockers video of Yu demonstrating the AI Battling system from last year, where he explained that by using intelligent systems (AI targeting, animation blending, etc I suppose) Ryo would be able to step into a punch if an enemy was out of reach or even leap onto a wall to perform a flying kick. He specifically called that a simplified command for a complicated technique. I think that's more what Yu is talking about when simplified controls comes up, but a better way to describe it would probably be context sensitive controls.

Again, here is the quote when Yu is asked about it:

YS : It’s a system that will make the character respond intelligently to the commands given by the player during battle. With simple commands you’ll be able to execute complex techniques.

Exactly how simple the rest of the controls will be is yet to be seen, but it absolutely doesn't seem like QTEs are set to replace any complicated action. Most of the information I can remember regarding QTE implementation into battles are from the original KS pitch, which of course is completely moot now seeing how far into the combat stretch goals we got.

-----

On a separate note R.E Yu possibly taking from other games for Shenmue III's mechanics, from the same interview I quoted before:

G: Do you play any games nowadays?

YS: I don’t really play other games, because if you play games it’s too easy to be influenced by them, and even if it is unintentional, one ends up losing their originality. On the other hand, I’m watching movies.

Yu has said multiple times one of the things he wants to stand out about Shenmue III is its originality. He isn't just going to copy+paste existing mechanics to make it more palatable to the mainstream audiences who never cared about the game in the first place. Shenmue III is by the fans, for the fans, period.

Update 2! Video 2 on The Harbor!
https://youtu.be/6sMqic_P02g
Hi Everyone.

I recently went to Japan for vacation/business and decided to take a trip to Yokosuka for some research.

Big thanks to Switch for showing me around :D

We took many photos of The Harbor and Dobuita Street which you can find below! We took lots of video footage too which will be uploaded at a later time to my Youtube channel.

It is amazing that even in 2017, Shenmue still is an accurate representation of Dobuita Street!

If you want to travel to Dobuita, feel free to PM me any questions you may have!

We ran into another Shenmue Fan who made a blog out of our visit here:
https://oninokokoro.wordpress.com/2017/04/04/%e6%a8%aa%e9%a0%88%e8%b3%80%e5%b8%82%e3%81%ae%e3%80%8c%e3%81%a9%e3%81%b6%e6%9d%bf%e9%80%9a%e3%82%8a%e3%80%8dyokosuka-citys-dobuita-street-%e7%a5%9e%e5%a5%88%e5%b7%9d/

I spoiler tagged each section of photos since there are 90+ photos in total!

Enjoy!

Re: Ryo's clothes look too tight

It also wouldn't be wise to draw conclusions on the rightness or wrongness of a small part of a videogame that would be barely at 50% completion at best.

But c'est la vie.

Re: Politics

I strongly disagree with the notion that he is the president America needs, though certainly, if nothing else, he is the president we deserve. He has played you for a fool if you earnestly believe he gives a damn about jobs going to Americans. He employs foreigners in the manufacturing of his own damn goods for pete sakes Frozen.

Trump blasted the practice on the Late Show as Letterman looked through his so called signature line of clothing he was plugging only for it to be exposed it as part of the same. Trump is guilty of basically every business practice imaginable he now blasts businesses for. "Rules for all of you, none for me". It could not be more ironic that so many prop him up on a pedestal as the solution to these behaviors when he himself has always been part of the problem.

Politics

Can't help but feel more at risk of a World War 3 and being bombed to hell in Japan. We got U.S and Japanese Military base not too far from me and just the fact I live in the closest major city to China and North Korea.

Not like we couldn't shoot some of the missles out of the sky before they land but you know, thats still an act of war. That or we are doing the shooting in the first place.

Just a fear I have. Trump isn't level headed.
Looks he'd declare war over twitter at 2am in his jammies.

Re: Why is Shenmue I better than Shenmue II

Well to a certain extent Shenmue does feel less like a game than Shenmue II. They were going a more unique way when they made the first entry in the series. The changes to the pace and the reduction of the mundane in Shenmue II made it more enjoyable overall but they also made it come closer to a traditional game while doing so.

Talking about the setting is a difficult matter. Shenmue is meant to have a familiar feeling city and a fixed location you can call home while Shenmue II is meant to throw you in a foreign enviroment with ever changing life conditions. Of course everyone can have their preferences but I don't think it's fair to say that one or the other setting is better. I could only rate how well the games manage to pull of their respective feel and to me the slight winner here is Shenmue II.

In specific points, this is where Shenmue has the upper hand
- Weather effects
- Importance of time (and how you go about to make it go by)
- NPC routines
- Free training
- Ease of counter attacks (the timing in II is so strict that for a long time I thought they were gone)
- Kitten
- Forklifts
- Telephones
- Online features of the Passport Disc (too bad it's so hard to access the stuff)
- Raffle and winning cans

There are only a handful of things missing from Shenmue II that go deeper into the details of the game, like the items that don't carry over or were made into capsule toys since they lost their purpose or how the camera can be moved during fights.

Re: Why is Shenmue I better than Shenmue II

Shenmue 1 felt like you were playing a big fish in a small pond.
It pretty much nailed the point that you're a naive teenager surrounded by the comfort of people who love you in a familiar location. The progression is Ryo realizing that through his hot-headed persistence and that using his fists he can do anything.
Shenmue 2 captured being fish out of water perfectly.
Ryo is thrown into the deep end, he's lost and way over his head. If it wasn't for the kindness of strangers and people teaching him how to survive and to calm his temper he would be killed.

From what I understand Shenmue is meant to be sadness, followed by anger and revenge, followed by forgiveness and that his skills are better spent on something much bigger than himself.

I honestly think Shenmue 3 will slow things down a bit, but with some big action scenes.

Re: Shenmue 3 trailer is FINALLY HERE!!

Boy that logo sticks out. It really sucks.

Other than that - HYPE. That looked pretty fucking good. Obviously the facial animations aren't there yet (probably waiting for actual voice recording to take place), but the Shenmue feel is there. And the environments are spectacular.

I'm amazed by just how cinematic it looks. Especially the bit where he's fighting the fisherman guy. And Chobu really does look like a watercolour come to life.

It's hard to come up with words right now. Trying to post news, upload video, make screenshots and whatnot.

First discovery! Look who's back at Shenhua's house (in the lower left corner).

Re: Shenmue 3 trailer is FINALLY HERE!!

The YT & NeoGAF comments are making me VERY emotional right now. What's happened to the gaming community I knew of 20+ years ago? Hell, you could've said it was more "kid-oriented" back then, but the toxicity today is unreal...

Re: Shenmue 3 trailer is FINALLY HERE!!

I really don't understand people can't comprehend that this is early in-development footage. When you look at a teaser like this, and you see the insane detail in the environments and then you look at the characters and you realise there are no facial animations, surely it clicks in your head instantly, that they haven't started on them yet...lol

Some gamers clearly have no idea what the fuck is going on in the playstation youtube comments. Kills me inside.

Re: Shenmue 3 trailer is FINALLY HERE!!

The way that Ryo just knocks Mr. Muscles down after protecting Shenhua and how he then fights him in that sunset scene makes me believe that it's some thug at first but he turns into a friend. You know, kinda like Goro, except that this guy actually has skills.

I have to say it now, I absolute love that training scene with the old man on the boats. Pure Shenmue and Kung-Fu movie essence and it's pretty damn well coreographed and animated.

Re: Shenmue 3 trailer is FINALLY HERE!!

The criticism on neogaf is ridiculous. How can they be so critical about the faces when it's clear the facial animation hasn't been implemented here at all beyond some mouth movement?

They will eat their words upon release.

Re: Shenmue 3 trailer is FINALLY HERE!!

Oh my god, I loved this trailer! Shenmue 3 looks beautiful! Ryo and Shenhua looks so damn good! This trailer made me so happy! I wasn't expecting the game to look this good as it's still not out for another year or so but my god this is Shenmue! Right from the start it gave me that vibe! Seriously Yu Suzuki, you have done a great job and I couldn't be more grateful to you.

I don't think the characters look emotionless, I've never been one to care what others think but maybe they could show a bit more emotion I guess but this is one the first trailer. The FIRST trailer of Shenmue 3. Hopefully the emotions of the characters face will improve but it's still not bad. I definitely saw it in the characters and felt everything Shenmue through the whole trailer!

So glad you guys liked it too!

Re: Shenmue 3 trailer is FINALLY HERE!!

Fuck, this scene is just amazing! Beautiful and well animated, movements, even on the jacket are well done. Pretty impressive.

Fuck those comments on youtube and gaf, people are toxic and stupid these days!

Yes! Like Spaghetti, it's the way the choreography is that gives me confidence in the end product. Now, as for NeoGAF and YT comments, I'm, again, emotional. A lot of these people are straight-up immature and degenerate in their thinking. If they can't get that this is a WIP, then I don't know what else can be done with them.

Re: Shenmue 3 trailer is FINALLY HERE!!

Can I just say, my 12 year old self who sat up playing Shenmue 2 when it first came out on DC (PAL) until 2 in the morning to get to the end of it is insanely happy right now to know that he will finally leave the cave.

Re: Shenmue 3 trailer is FINALLY HERE!!

The first trailer for Shenmue 3 was always going to be divisive. The sequel to a 128-bit Dreamcast game running on the modern Unreal Engine, of course things were going to look a little different. Overall though, I'm very pleased by what has been shown so far. The world of Shenmue 3 looks beautiful, there is obviously still work to be done but I have complete confidence in Yu Suzuki and his team to deliver.

It's a small detail, but the HD Phoenix Mirror really stood out for me. It looks beautiful!

Yeah, this is actually the moment in the trailer that really caught my attention as well. These new textures on the Phoenix Mirror really elevate the model above what could be achieved from the original. It's a work of art, which now better reflects the ancient jade that such a priceless artefact would be made of, this better emphases how important the Phoenix Mirror actually is to the story of Shenmue.

Re: Shenmue 3 trailer is FINALLY HERE!!

Great video by Johnny.

The general negative shenmue teaser response is typical internet hysteria. I left a detailed post on gaf about the current situation, which basically explained everything in detail from every possible perspective. Alot of ppl understood it when it was broken down for them. However ive learned over the last two days the following.

1) ALOT of people do not understand nuance
information.

2) a good majority will comform to the group think of the discussion and jump on the trending bandwagon (no facial animations. Its the end of the world.....)

3) There is so much over sensitivity with ppl these days. They get triggered and outraged about anything.

4) ignorant trolls who want to shout the game down no matter what (yakuza is better so shenmue should just die. I hope it fails etc etc etc).

If someone is not sure and seeks and answer. No problem. But when you get the answer over and over again and you continue to be a dick, then there's an issue.

The biggest shock for me was neogaf. The biggest gaming forum on the net which should understand all the nuances in gaming development and such. Nope not a chance.

Why should you use your brain when you can just drop that smug one-liner and join the cool guys.

Also, let's stop overrating NeoGaf, all their industry insiders are long gone and most of their gaming discussions are fanboy ridden and trash-tier. Nowadays it's basically a GameFaqs with a fancier account-validation system and a politically extremist dictatorship.

Re: Shenmue 3 trailer is FINALLY HERE!!

Ryo's animation is good. The fisherman's one has something wrong and his very unpolished design makes the whole scene not to take seriously.

My brother no longer plays video games and has no time to follow the news but did beat Shenmue 2 and often watched myself playing the games in the past. He's not as fan as me but does enjoy the franchise. He told me that he fail to understand why YSnet showed this trailer to the world if the game shape is not ready enough.

Mmmh, maybe the fisherman having a little more head movement and facial expressions would help? I'm almost sure he's teaching Ryo a move to evade enemy punches with minimum movement of oneself.

As for your brothers question, you got your answer today. That executive producer guy used PR speak to say: "Deep Silver wanted us to show something at Gamescom since they just gave us a deal for S3 and wanted to create some hype for their Gamescom appearance. We didn't have time to make a proper teaser so we used this internal promo reel from which we removed the facial animations."

We may like it or not. But Deep Silver is a German publisher and Gamescom is the biggest gaming event in Europe so it's pretty clear that if you sign a deal with them and take their money, you're gonna have to give them something to show at Gamescom.

That's something Yu could be critizised for. If he was looking for a publisher, why didn't he make a teaser long ago? Any publishing company would ask for something to show when they announce the partnership, not just Deep Silver.
