My 4 theories for Shenmue 3

Here are my theories for Shenmue III

1.)Lan Di=Dragon and Ryo=North Star?
In the bad ending of Shenmue II, Shenhua told Ryo to hurry while the dragon clouds Ryo with black surroundings. And when Lan Di shows up and kills Ryo, She said the dragon called the clouds to hide the morning star; so Lan di must be the dragon, and Ryo must be the north star. Perhaps it just a prophecy. I'm not sure if this one's correct, But we will find out in the next game.

2.)Glowing lights on the center of each mirror.
We knew that the mirrors were made from the Phantom River Stone in the Guilin Region. But about the glowing objects on these two, I will give you 4 examples. Here is the first example, After Ryo left the basement, when Ryo carefully observes this mirror while Fukuhara felt creeped out when he thought Ryo was possessed by it. Then for a next example, While discussing Yamagashi about the mirrors, He said that these mirrors contain the treasure of good and evil, like the yin and yang. It means that he has to be careful that has something to do with his father's death. A third example, like my last theory, before Lan Di kills Ryo and snatches the phoenix mirror, The glowing object of the phoenix mirror stops glowing red. But in Shenmue I, the dragon mirror keeps glowing green when Lan Di possesses. And the last example when the stones that Shenhua's adopted father got, Shenhua declared that these stones contain voices. Like the second example, maybe these glowing lights have the same similarities like the stone.

3.) Sunming Zhao
In an interview with Yu and his one of his ideas for Shenmue III, we learned that the man with Iwao in the photo, could be Sunming Zhao. We knew that Zhao was killed in Meng Cun, but Yu stated that he will play an important role in the next game. Perhaps he is the adopted father of Shenhua, and maybe he has a different name to hide from enemies, just like Obi Wan changed his name to Ben Kenobi from Stormtroopers in ANH.

4.) Phoneix and Dragon mirrors
In Shenmue I, Master Chen told Ryo that if the mirrors are formed together, the chi you will resurrect itself and devour the world. But in Shenmue II, Yuanda Zhu said if the mirrors form a key, the treasures will be found to revive the Qing Dynasty. Although We though Zhu contradicts himself about the mirrors, but perhaps for the chi you men, they are doing it for evil; And perhaps he probably didn't know about using the mirrors for good, after he Told Chen about the mirrors. Until when he studied to find if there is another way to use the mirrors for good, while being hidden form the chi you men.

Re: Microsoft's regional exclusivity deal

If this has been discussed before (I'll be surprised if it hasn't), then any links would be appreciated.

I just wanted to hear people's thoughts on the deal between Microsoft and Sega, which made Shenmue 2 exclusive to the original Xbox in North America.

How do you think it was handled by both parties? What did they do right? What did they do wrong?

How do you think it affected sales of the game in that market, and the position of the series overall?

If a similar deal was to be struck for Shenmue 3, then what, if anything, should be done differently?

I thought it was a bit of a cock up.

1 it pissed off US Dreamcast owners most of who ended up just importing the pal version.
2 they should have ported both games over to XBox not just II with a movie[even more pointless with the 10 minute digest vid on Shenmue II's disc]
Not releasing it in Japan at the same time caused them to miss the boat and it could have helped them sell a few more consoles [think the series sold around 2M in Japan?]

But of course SIII was sort of confirmed for XBox

http://uk.xbox.ign.com/articles/384/384250p1.html

And I remember reading it was all but announced at E3 several years back and a trailer was even made.

As for the contract it could have been just what they said and MS may still own the rights to publish in the US?

Re: Is it just too late for Shenmue III?

When I read arguments like that Shenmue III will have to meet modern gaming desires to be successful, automatically the following question comes to my mind: "Why? Did Shenmue I & II try to meet the mainstream gaming desires of its age (somewhere between the 90's and the new millennium)?"

In my personal view, mainstream gamers have not change a lot from that day. What they desire today, the same things they were desiring in the days when Shenmue first appeared. And I can suspect what these desires are (brutal desires, of course):
guns, gore, killing people for fun, slaughtering people in the streets, cutting heads, blood, lasers, ultra violence, zombies and all these related daemonical desires.

Do you think Yu Suzuki would think to put in a Shenmue III these elements for the shake of the brutal instincts of many (relative with these instincts) mainstream gamers?

Sega has shown some some signs where would easily do this, like e.g. with Shadow the Hedgehog holding a gun... and what else. But, I can not dare to think Yu Suzuki would ever do this. That would be disrespectful towards himself.

Yes, we have all see that a Shenmue III would have magic elements et cetera, but I would never believe that Yu, while creating Shenmue III, would stray from the spirit of the following principle: "Martial arts are used to protect people's lives".

Re: Shenmue Bicycle Mod Project by James Reiner (Progress Vi

I think maybe there could even be different approaches for the Bike mod. OK I'm mainly just guessing here, but possible approaches that came to my mind:

- Replace the Motion data from Ryos walking to the bike motion data. Not sure about the format in S1, in Shenmue 2 you have seperate .mot files for some motions. In Shenmue 1 i think the motions get switched in mapinfo.bin, quote from a Whats Shenmue mapinfo "FTLK: Set motion %d to %s 2"

- Maybe it's also in the 1st_read.bin, if you search the 1st read.bin of Whats Shenmue for "BIKE" you find a reference. Other references in 1st read i suggest at least looking at are "BikeRoot" (I think that might be the definition of the bike) and "Mo_HoldBike" (I think maybe thats the motion for sitting on the bike).

- Edit the motion.bin. Prolly the hardest part since that file is not really human readable. But the 1st read refers to it, i think it refers to hex codes for the start byte to read from if i understand it right.

Re: Shenmue Bicycle Mod Project by James Reiner (Progress Vi

Personally i think the Bike mod might even be easier than we suppose. Probably just a line commented out in 1st_read.bin or so. The old whats Shenmue one might be the be the best bet since it is the oldest one. I don't think they did rocket science to take it out. there's so much unused stuff in the files and some NPC ride a bike as well. the timeline between that old VHS video demo where Ryo rides a bike and the whats Shenmue Demo is not too long... Anyways, I think there's several approaches to this, not sure which one would be the easiest. Hardest part is understanding stuff like 1st_read.bin and such, but once you edited it successfully you can prolly stremline the process so you try out mods at a pace like sausages get processed in a hot dog factory...

Possible links with Ziming, Lan Di, Sunming Zhao, Iwao?

I don't know whether it has been mentioned before but Bajiquan the martial art partially practiced by the Hazuki family (incorporate moves from Bajiquan as well as jujitsu) and also is the martial art practiced by Ziming/Xiuying. It might interesting for people to know that Bajiquan originates from Mengcun---ring any bells :) ? also Piguazhang is also from the same province (Hebei)... just thought it might be interesting for people to know that! And any information people might have to add..

Re: Shenmue on Oculus Rift

Hey there, this is my first post here!

I heard some of you guys are interested in playing Shenmue on the Oculus Rift. Thats a nice coincidence, because I am giant fan of Shenmue and a indie dev that own a Oculus Rift dev kit. So I just went ahead and tried to get the NullDC emulator to run on the Rift with Shenmue. The video below shows Shenmue formatted to be viewed inside the Oculus Rift.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDpdVyxrVLk

I still have to implement head tracking, and adjust the UI elements to be viewable inside the Rift.
Also at the moment only the UI is 3D, I still have to look into how to get this to render properly in directx 3D, so I can create some nice 3D. I at the moment am focusing on modding World Of Warcraft, this is only a side project, so please don´t expect any fast progress on this.

Re: Shenmue 1 Undub 99min CD01 for Dreamcast

Just wanted to say: you are THE MAN if you manage to put this together. Words cannot express the joy it would bring me to play through this great game again, finally reunited with its original audio track.

I created an account here just to say: RAH-RAH-RAH! Don't give up!

I'm going to be checking back here every day for updates :)

Thanks for the support. :)

CD1 and CD2 are now 100% complete! (PAL Version, CDDA, Coca Cola Mod, FREE SPEECH & CINEMATICS FULL Undub)
Currently working on CD3.

Finally the FREE SPEECH and CINEMATICS are completely undubbed now. (JP Speech, ENG Subs)

**The only time that NPCs are silent is if there are speech files that were missing or incompatible. (No way to fix this!)
**If an NPC is silent then ENG subs are still used. (No more JP/ENG hybrid Subs lol)

I am glad that I got the undub working properly after all this time.
CD3 will be completed soon.

I will keep you updated.

Hey guys,

I found this on youtube earlier today. I don't no if this has been posted yet, but if it hasn't, then enjoy.

The entire movie is in the Japanese dub without subtitles, so good luck understanding it. It is also a little choppy at the beginning, but gets better as it goes on.

enjoy peeps

SII CHAR DATABASE-ALL 700 (AND 1) CHARACTERS! UPDATE 27/3/15

http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx318/askvera/s2cd_sigbanner.png

DOWNLOAD - https://www.dropbox.com/s/8qkby011a3tkgg2/Shenmue%20II%20Character%20Database.rar

Yep. After nearly a decade, it's done, people :D

HISTORY OF THE SHENMUE II CHARACTER DATABASE PROJECT
Ever since casting my eyes upon screenshots of Shenmue published in the (now defunct) UK magazine Computer and Video Games, I have been absolutely enthralled by the series. This game was definitely something different. As the famous tagline proclaimed in the trailers before its release – RPG had changed. Sure, hailing the game as being its own exciting new “genre” with a somewhat silly acronym as its name (FREE- Full Reactive Eyes Entertainment) was being a tad overzealous perhaps, but you had to admire Yu Suzuki’s ambition for this game. When I finally got to play it on the Christmas morning of 2000, it did not disappoint. The atmosphere created was just amazing to me – a realistic, living, breathing town with over 300 individual characters – all with their own specific daily routines and, in supplementary materials, all named and given detailed biographies! Throw in the fantastic music and the engaging (if not completely original) story and you really had something special. And this was only part one of the saga...

Bundled with the game was the ‘Shenmue Passport’ disc. Through the Dreamcast’s internet connection, this enabled access to all sorts of information about the game, as well as ranking leaderboards for the various mini-games and the chance to get exclusive capsule toys. One of the best features was the character profile section however; as you met and conversed with the characters during a playthrough, their profiles would gradually be added to the Passport. Now to some, giving all 300+ characters names, stats, and biographies may seem extraneous, (especially given characters that Ryo can’t even speak to have detailed information about them!) but it really shows the love and care put into the game by the developers and the amount of depth to Shenmue that few games have matched.

PASSPORT EXPIRED
The Passport service was eventually taken offline in April 2002, but thankfully the character profiles had also been published in Prima’s strategy guide book for the game, so the information was still readily available to fans.
Which brings us to the sequel game, Shenmue II – which I got the following Christmas in 2001. This sadly could end up being the last game in the series, despite it ending on a cliffhanger and at a game-changing point in the saga’s story. Nonetheless, the sequel’s world was even bigger than the first’s– Ryo travels to Hong Kong to continue his quest, with most of its areas completely dwarfing Shenmue I’s in terms of size, as well as the amount of characters – around 700. There was also a lot more mini-games and sidequests to discover, and fans generally agree it is more action-packed and that the plot moves a lot quicker than the first game (though some will argue Shenmue I’s atmosphere has more charm) And what of these 700-odd characters? Were they all named and profiled as per the original game? As it turns out, yes – but these were not readily available to the fans outside of Japan.

Firstly, unlike the first Shenmue, there was no Passport. There was no Prima guide either, as the Dreamcast version had been cancelled in America. America eventually saw an updated version of Shenmue II on the Microsoft Xbox, and a Prima guide was finally published. However, unlike the Shenmue I book, there were only profiles on the main characters; Ryo, Shenhua, Xiuying, Fangmei, Ren, Joy, Wong, Lan Di, Dou Niu and Yuan. The Xbox version, with the new snapshot feature, did include profiles on some of the other characters; unlocked when you took pictures of them, but it didn't come close to having profiles for all the characters. Would we ever know the names and backgrounds of the reams of anonymous characters?

A FAN EFFORT
Shortly after I had completed Shenmue II, I looked around on the internet for fansites/information about the series, ultimately finding the excellent Shenmue Dojo website. I joined the forums, and this was in fact one of the first message boards I signed up to on the internet. My handle on the forum was (and still is) ‘Miles Prower’, as I am also a long-time fan of the Sonic the Hedgehog series of games (and Sega games in general). I made a lot of good friends through the Dojo community and have many fond memories associated with the forums. I think between us we have probably discussed every single aspect of the games to death, but as many fans will attest, you find or notice something new with every playthrough of these wonderful games. Not to mention the very active hacking/modding scene that developed, mostly headed by longtime member LanDC, in which reams of unused content was discovered and many interesting and or humourous modifications made to the game. I still get a warm nostalgic feeling every time I watch LanDC’s Road to Amihama videos in particular.

And indeed, the question of whether detailed character profiles existed for Shenmue II’s cast was raised in discussion. In a thread from 2003, a member named Eek the Cat shared some scans of a guidebook he owned published in Japan called the Shenmue II Perfect Guidebook. The scans showed that there were indeed names and profiles for each and every character.
Eek was even kind enough to put all of the scans together on a CD for me and mail it to me, and even threw in a couple of audio CD’s he had compiled containing music from Shenmue II (sadly the second game never had any official soundtracks released).

The problem? Being that this book was from Japan, the character names were in Chinese and the information in Japanese. Through discussion in the topic, another forum member called khien agreed to help with translating the character names as she could read Chinese. And so began the effort to translate the many character profiles. I began by gradually posting them within the topic, and then eventually creating a website (which, thanks to Web Archive, you can still view here , albeit with most of the images missing).

Continuing into 2004 and beyond, progress was quite slow, mainly due to me starting university. Khien’s life ended up becoming quite busy as well, but thanks to the efforts of another forum member, Oda Ryo, the translation work still continued. The forum member Kiyuu (possibly Japan’s biggest Shenmue fan, and often referred to as the ‘Shenmue Queen’), also informed me that another book existed, the Shenmue II Complete Guide, which contained profiles for characters not included in the Perfect Guidebook; namely those for the many pedestrians who wander the streets of Hong Kong. I made the effort to acquire this book myself and make scans for the remaining profiles.

RESSURECTING THE PROJECT
As the years went on, however, my free time became less and less. I studied for three years at university and after graduating in 2008, I was working full time; in short I was growing up. It was also looking increasingly unlikely that a Shenmue III would ever emerge. Life went on. However, my enthusiasm to complete the project was somewhat fired up again when Peter from the forums (who most likely owns the biggest Shenmue collection in Ireland) got in touch with me on Facebook asking if I was still working on it, as the Dojo staff had managed to get an interview with one of the voice actors for the English dub of Shenmue II (a very interesting read by the way, which can be found here , and they had requested that video clips be assembled of the characters he voiced, which he supplied a list of – but only by name and brief descriptions. Using the information from my project I helped with finding some of them. I then found myself wanting to get the project finished once and for all, and got back in touch with Oda Ryo who happily assisted me with getting the remaining names translated.

I had also spoken to the member ‘thegreatchai’, who had also been attempting to catalogue the character information on her wiki site, and over time we assisted each other greatly. I began transferring the information to an Excel spreadsheet with the intention of creating a complete database of all the Shenmue II characters – which after assembling a numbered list I discovered there are exactly 700 – surely a deliberate intention of the creators? At any rate, after a few months work the project was finally finished. I am glad that this information is now easily accessible to Shenmue fans, and while some may consider me obsessive or downright insane for pursuing with the project, it was worth it for a game series that I love so much and one day hope will be continued in some form. We can but hope. The saga may still go on....

[FINISHED] Shenmue II save game collection

HELLO everyone!
Ever wanted to do the Yellow Head Building part again, but you don't have a save? Well then...
Welcome to my save game collection! Here you'll find a plethora of save games for Shenmue II (PAL). I usually save after every cutscene. With a total of 116 saves + a conversion tool, I think this is the best collection!

LINK: https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=67847CEE46E27931!3377&authkey=!ADYoUkCpYsA6Jt8&ithint=folder%2czip

I really hope it helps somebody!

Forgot to say: The saves include all the moves that you can learn in Shenmue 2 (move scrolls included) and lots of money (about 10000$... or 2000 capsule toys!!)

Re: Funnest Ways to Play Shenmue

I like to get myself surrounded by Dreamcast nostalgia in magazines videos, music and more. I like to get Chinese food from Panda then sit down explore everything in the game more so than advancing the story. I am so immersed in not just Shenmue but DC as well and to me it's 1999 again. :D

Re: Funnest Ways to Play Shenmue

Probably the funnest way to play Shenmue besides the typical route of triggering all the hidden cutscene, training and collecting until the cows come etc. is to let Ryo act like a fool by failing at every point in the game where it won't result in a retry. I call that a "Failzuki" run.
Shenmue has a handfull of scenes where you can do that, like getting beaten during the schoolgirls QTE in the harbor or acting so stupid during the forklift training that Mark will give up to teach Ryo how to operate it properly.

Shenmue II is much better in this regard and that's where I originally coined the term "Failzuki". There are a ton of scenes after losing fights or failing QTEs. Especially the whole quest of getting the stolen bag back is full of them.

#SaveShenmue

http://teamyu.net/SaveShenmue/TeamYu.png

We figured it was best to start a new thread that dealt with current campaign details, rather than expecting newcomers to wade through pages of outdated information in the original Team Yu topic .

From March 2012 to December 2013, with the help of several fan groups like Shenmue 500K, Shenmue UK, Shenmue Master, and of course Shenmue Dojo, we have been co-ordinating a monthly Shenmue Tweetathon every 3rd of the month, using the hashtag #GiveYuTheShenmueLicense. This has been supported by the likes of Sumo Digital's Steve Lycett, Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner, gamesTM magazine, 1UP.com, Sega Nerds, comedians Imran Yusuf and Matt Walker, French musician Kavinsky, former Puddle of Mudd guitarist Paul Phillips, Virtua Fighter composer Takayuki Nakamura, and the voice of Ryo Hazuki himself, Corey Marshall.

On January 3rd 2014, the Tweetathon undergoes a New Years evolution, expanding onto Facebook and Tumblr along with Twitter, using the new hashtag #SaveShenmue.

The aim is to keep exploiting the public platform of social media to raise awareness of gamers' discontent with Sega, and their refusal to fund a revival of this unfinished series and provide their customers with the closure we've been awaiting for over a decade. At the same time we aim to appeal to console manufacturers like Sony, who recently expressed an interest in pursuing Shenmue as one of its most highly requested titles for the Playstation 4, asking them to step in and help drag Sega kicking and screaming into the realms of customer satisfaction.

To help make Yu Suzuki's unshakable goal of Shenmue III a reality, we ask all gamers to follow the three simple steps at TeamYu.net/SaveShenmue every month, maintaining the pressure on all concerned. Please spread the word and be heard on the 3rd - Team Yu needs YOU to #SaveShenmue!

Why Shenmue's Future Only Makes Sense on PS4.

Please, before screaming and raging about whatever your personal platform preference is, watch this video I prepared to discuss this.

Hopefully, by the end, you'll agree.
