Re: Sleeping Dogs

Just finished the game 100%. Enjoyed it a lot. Wasn't mad keen on the story, i think the whole cop/triad thing could have been executed a lot better. Half the time it just felt like Shen was a cop only by name. The hand to hand combat and driving mechanics are awesome, as is the city of Hong Kong. Gunplay is weak IMO, but the hand to hand makes up for it. I liked the blend of Hand to hand and guns in missions.

People have reported many glitches but i rarely found them. I fell through the map once after hitting a wall, and there are a few dodgey animation glitches here and there, but other than that it feels polished. I think the 8.5/10 rating Gamespot gave it is a fair score. If the story and gunplay were better, it would be a 9+/10

Re: Yakuza series

I'm almost done with Y3. I miss only one trophy and I didn't get it yet only because I lost my system data and had to start all over again, lol.

I had a blast with it, but it wasn't the blast of my life, sadly. The Yakuza/RGG series is way beyond Shenmue as far as storytelling and characterization are concerned. Seriously, it makes Shenmue look like a totally amateurish stuff when it comes to those aspects. Unfortunately, even on PS3, the Yakuza games play far less excitingly than Shenmue. The mechanics found in Shenmue are rock-solid to this day, whereas the Yakuza games' mechanics are sloppy as hell, unpolished, uninspired and - to quote that stupid DmC reboot - generally nauseating. I already invested a lot of my time in Y4 and I know that it improves on the Y3 gameplay formula by a great deal, but it's still not up to the challenge of surpassing Shenmue. Not even close. It's also a fact that Shenmue's OST is a true masterpiece while the Yakuza OSTs vary from average to good.

In a nutshell, I have these strange feels towards the Yakuza series... In one way, it's way better than Shenmue ever was, but in many other ways it's far worse, kinda like its poor cousin.

One way or another, it's amazing to have Kazzy and the funky bunch.

The Last of Us *Save Glitch Fix in OP*

Any one effected by the save glitch do this.

Some players may have been encountering an issue with The Last of Us which affected the autosave feature, which can result in a loss of progress in the single-player campaign. The team at Naughty Dog has been diligently investigating as soon as we heard from our community, and we have determined the cause to be on servers for The Last of Us which were capturing player statistics. We have made a change to ours to address this issue. All players should quit any game in progress out to the XMB and restart The Last of Us. All players can now enjoy single-player and online multiplayer matches as normal.

We will continue to monitor forums and social media, and investigate any other issues that may present themselves.

Re: NTSC vs. PAL vs. Japanese

Panzer Dragoon Saga: While I really do like the Japanese cover art, there's something I just love about the US cover. It's simpler but I think it's ... I don't know I just like it :P I think it mainly has to do with the expression on Edge and Azel's faces.

I'm sure many people will disagree.

US

I've also always liked the cheesy American fantasy art on the cover of Suikoden more so than the Japanese cover. Not sure why, just do.

Re: American vs. PAL vs. Japanese

US and Japanese covers (the EU version is the same as the Japanese one):
http://oi48.tinypic.com/15heaud.jpg
http://oi49.tinypic.com/ao72o5.jpg

Not actually sure which one I like more.
Both are the same basic idea, just a different amount of clothing.
I might be leaning more toward the Japanese one, just because the inclusion of more clothing obviously makes his character design stand out more, and the blue flames are a teensy bit more prominent in it, which would make it a bit more eye-catching on a store shelf.
Both are good though.

And just a reminder, the topic is also about which you like more and why...

Re: RPG's( NOT Falcom,Square,Bethesda,Bioware)

Well Lost Odyssey was the first RPG to use the Unreal Engine 3.

To back up, the engine is great and bad all at once. It allows for a lot of really great effects like multilayered particles and textures and a bunch of other effects and even a ton of AI related options. The biggest problem though is that performance isn't the focus, because of this UE3 (and any game made using a UE) will have framerate and buffering issues.

Using UE was kind of a mixed bag, on the one hand the game was going to take a hit in its speed, and was prone to errors and bugs. The pros did outweigh the cons though, making the game would be faster and cheaper and the cinematics would be woven into the game more efficiently.

RPGs always had their cinematic moments, but this was different. instead of setting down the controller and watching a cutscene play out that had visuals that drastically differed from the main game, Mistwalker could create animations that flowed directly into gameplay, and experiment more with the angles and filters in a real time environment.

To put it bluntly, Lost Odyssey used an engine that was never meant for its playstyle and despite it's rough edges was able to prove that companies that made RPGs could build large AAA engines. Square-Enix tried this approach and after releasing The Last Remnant began work on what was then called the white engine. Tri-Ace created the Undiscovery Engine.

Sadly it seems like most studios are missing the point. Packing the disk full with more CG, placing the camera too close or too far to action, and spending too much time on refining the engine then actually using it to create games. Lost Odyssey still introduced a great idea to gaming that could one day help RPGs return to a golden age.

Re: American vs. PAL vs. Japanese

A couple latter-day N64 classics which I have, in all their guises. These two were both released in 2000, I believe.

Perfect Dark
PAL
http://i50.tinypic.com/rjhaxg.jpg
NTSC-U
http://i45.tinypic.com/2wlzkuw.jpg
NTSC-J
http://i45.tinypic.com/ta0dog.jpg

One of my all-time favourites. I have it in PAL and NTSC-U, but not the Japanese one. I'm gonna say that I like the Japanese cover art best with this one. Even though it wasn't a Japanese game (MADE IN BLIGHTY, FUCKERS!), NOJ gave it an awesome cover art in that region. As I understand it, the Japanese never really took to FPS games. So I guess that was Nintendo's way of tricking people over there into buying it? Whatever - awesome cover for a game that probably nobody in Japan bought.

The difference between the PAL and US box arts is weird. At a glance, they seem very similar. Then you realise that they are, in fact, totally different, made from totally different assets/what have you. Not sure which I prefer. There's cool things about both. If I had to choose, I would say the US box art just nabs it. The two Joannas are in a similar pose, and the intent is similar. While PAL Jo looks more like she does in the game (design-wise), and it's nice how the system info isn't taking up a border on the right, but transparently laid unto the art.. there's just something badass about the US box art. Just the laser and her gleaming eyes in the dark, which better suits the game. Slightly.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
PAL
http://i50.tinypic.com/1zvydr9.jpg
NTSC-U
http://i45.tinypic.com/20qj3p4.jpg
NTSC-J
http://i49.tinypic.com/2me7squ.jpg

Another one of my all-time favourites. Again, the Japanese box art is wildly-different to the others, which also again are fairly similar to each other. I don't know if it's just because, in my part of the world at least, they have some 'exotic' vibe, but I love the art on my Japanese games. They're just wacky, and fantastic to look at. I'm sure there's a big falsehood on my part, there. For as much as I think my Japanese Banjo-Kazooie has awesome art, the western releases had art which was much more in-line with the content of the game.

Back to MM. Love this game to pieces. Between the Collector's Edition US box (of which I could not find a 'regular' flavour), and the standard green PAL box, I have to say I much prefer the PAL box art. Same title with a different background, essentially. Whilst I can totally see where they were going with the US one (madness/power exuding from the Mask of Majora), it just looks kind of shit. Like a filter sloppily-applied in Photoshop. Conversely, the PAL box contains some beautiful art hidden in shades of green. This looks like it could have been as equally a quick effort in Photoshop, but the difference (to my eye) is that the latter looks good. Also, we again see the transparent system info overlaid onto otherwise uninterrupted art on the PAL box. NOE were doing this around this time, wonder why the other regions weren't?

Gonna give this one to PAL in the west, and I can't decide between PAL or Japanese overall.

P.S. However, the hologram on my US cart blows away my shitty PAL one :D

Re: American vs. PAL vs. Japanese

Galerians Ash. Japanese and US versions.

http://oi46.tinypic.com/263cxmv.jpg
http://oi50.tinypic.com/2lt0dk.jpg

This one is strange, since I actually really love the original artwork for the Galerians games. But despite that, I can't help but like the US cover better on this one.
Despite being a nice bit of character artwork, the Japanese one just feels like it lacks much offhand impact. To me at least, it doesn't feel like it would stand out from the crowd, and make you want to check it out just based on the box art. A little too much white in there, and the colors present are a bit too neutral. It's a nice piece when you single it out and really look at it, but on a shelf full of games, it probably wouldn't make much of an impression.
The US boxart is a bit more mysterious though, with kind of an odd, creepy edge to it, and a good little splash of color. Kind of a sense of menace to it, and I love that. Come to think of it, it was probably this piece of boxart that made me want to check the series out to begin with.
