Re: Did Shenmue have the best music ever?

Consider this:

Here's my approach. Compose some music first. Put all my thoughts into a tune without
telling anything. Then let the staff, planners and scenario writers, listen to it.
And when each of them get some inspiration, I collect them and start shaping them into
a form. Getting ideas from various people including my thought is a good way to create
things with no particular color. Without writing sentences, without drawing pictures,
just music stimulates the imagination to create a new universe. So I made the music first. Read more.

Yu Suzuki first creates the music and (based on that) then creates the universe. So, in Shenmue there is a 1-on-1 relationship between music and the game itself. Shenmue it is a great game, so it has great music, or, Shenmue has great music, so it is a great game. Both of these sentences [and especially the second one, based on what Suzuki-san said (i.e. he first make the music, then the universe)] are valid, only when the inspiration that they have gathered from the music , have taken some excellent form (and reflects the greatness of the composed music)· and this is something that happens in Shenmue.

Re: How long does it take you to beat Dou Niu?

the final fight in shenmue wasn't that bad, because Douniu is too slow

fight against Baihu was the hardest IMO
I agree that the fight with Baihu was harder than the fight against Douniu. Also, when I was trying to beat Baihu with sophisticated/complicated moves, that did not work for me and I always end up losing. So, I end up using just Punch [just pressing X, while trying to execute just the simple punch (the one you see Ryo to execute when you press X only once), that did not allow him (most of the times) to execute any move] and Dodge and, by using that strategy, I easily won him.

Yeah, you were a little bit reprehensive/damnatory, but it is a good thing that eventually you accepted your mistake (no one is perfect, as you said). Let us turn our sight in the positive part of this and let this be (I think) a learning experience:

Gan! Gan! Pirates/Kaizokudan is on Google Play/iTunes Store

Yu Suzuki' s pirate-themed game "Gan! Gan! Pirates/Kaizokudan" is at last on Google Play and iTunes Store .
As with Shenmue City/Gai, Gan! Gan! Pirates/Kaizokudan is in Japanese and not translated in English, yet (although, there are some things in the game with English text).

In case you are a Japanese lovely Shenmue Dojo'er and you have that game in your collection (or you going to acquire it), please tell us your impressions!
In case you are an English speaker and, despite that this game is in a foreign language, you have already acquired it (or going to), then share with us your "it's all Japanese to me" moments!
In any case, speak out free, as you like!

Is Yu's creative spirit genuinely included in this game?

P.S.: I took the decision to open this thread, without passion or fear, driven by Yama's (relevant to the previous phrase) post .

Re: Team Yu needs you!

So, after reading the previous post by Ziming, I see Let's Get Sweaty's theory is proven right. Shenmue fans want engagement/interactiveness. Shenmue is engaging and about interactiveness. And while they do not find these qualities in a new Shenmue game (that is Shenmue III), they are going to find it in ways like these campaigns. Shenmue fans want to express their hope, excitement and love for Shenmue, through significant action (that also binds them together / unite them and, thus, interacting with each other).

Re: POLL: Ryo Statue

[...]
To address some opinions I've read in various places, I think if you're keen on it then you should buy it, as with anything, but don't let anyone make you feel obliged to "support the franchise" by paying nearly $200 for something you don't particularly want .
[...]
Buy it if it appeals to you at the price, but don't feel like you're "not a real fan" if it doesn't.
I think (like Let's Get Sweaty said) that in the back of a lot of Shenmue fans head there are these thoughts: "If I will buy the statue, then Sega will see how much I am willing to pay just for an inanimate statue. Therefore, Sega will see how much more money (compared to that for the statue) I am ready to pay for Shenmue III when they will make it. So, that will convince them to make it."

I am not saying that is a bad or a good thought (that is something each one must judge for him/er-self), but just to point out that does not guaranteed anything about the game. It may support the idea that F4F will make a Lan Di statue, too (for those who would love that to happen), but that will remain just for the statues.

I get the "sending Sega a message" thing, but it's possible to send the wrong message as well, encouraging Sega to just milk blindly loyal fans for profit on licensed merchandise without ever having to invest in the game itself.
This is just what I am thinking lately. That Sega will sniff out that there are some fans out there that will do anything to see a Shenmue III to come out in light. So let's do something about it. Let us find something profitable! That is it! Collectives, figurines, statues, cards, whatever, just produce some stuff with Shenmue on it and let the money flow!

Sega is just a corporation. Feelings (especially ours)? I am not really sure that they care about them (maybe only when they lose money), but I know that they are trying to survive as every other corporation (and that particular one has a hard job on it).

The thing that they revive Sega characters from the past in stuff like these (a recent example is " Sega Japan All Star card packs, inc. Shenmue ", but also "Sega All-Stars Racing", "Sega All-Stars Tennis" et cetera) is an indication to me that this is what they are heading for. That they are investing on their golden past to save their rusty present.

That is why they are saying "Never say never for a Shenmue HD", because "while you are not saying never, we are going to take your money (based on your nostalgic feelings for the game), and squeeze you all the way down, until the real thing will(?) come".

There is not hate about Sega (I would say it is just apathy towards it), nor that negativity has taken over the place, but I am trying to see things as they are and the truth itself is always positive in logic [despite that sometimes it is not in feelings (but better to be logic)].

P.S.: They even use Alex Kidd [a hero from "Alex Kidd in Miracle World" (= the only real Alex Kidd game) back in '86] to make their profits...

Ok, enough with my rant...

As for the statue, I chose "None", because:
1. I am a poor student
2. It is too expensive
3. I do not like to collect inanimate stuff (especially when they are that expensive...)
4. Despite being the best figurine of Ryo until now, I do not really like it (especially its head)
5. Last but not least: for the reasons I rant about above, that is I will feel like a victim or a slave of Sega and I do not want to be a slave to anyone or anything
Warning: I am just and only talking about myself in the reasons above (why I am not getting the statue). I do not necessarily point to anyone else (and of course you do not need to share the same opinions with me). Thank you for your understanding.

Re: Sega Japan All Star card packs, inc. Shenmue

And is Alex Kidd in that montage pic I really wanna see what artwork they've used for him, can't see him though.
Maybe I was just lucky to have formed my Alex Kidd perceptions on the graphics from Miracle World, but every time Sega illustrates how they remember their old mascot it makes me embarrassed to call myself a fan.

http://s18.postimg.org/6lo7sgb3t/image.jpg
The most accurate modern depiction of Alex Kidd that I have witnessed until now, comes from Segagaga:

Source: http://sega.jp/fb/album/04_alex/03.html

[Why they did not choose to use the that?]

Compared to the original:

I am not an expert, but I think it has something to do with the processor clock...

I am on Windows XP, so I do not know if the following is applicable to 7, too:
"Window's Start Button"(=the one on the keyboard) + "Pause/Break" button => (it opens the System Properties window) => go to the Advanced tab => Startup and Recovery => click Settings => (it opens the Startup and Recovery window) => at System Startup, click Edit => it will show something like this:

[Boot Loader]
timeout=1
Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /noexecute=optin /usepmtimer

Try to change the "timeout=" to something like 30.

I do not know if it will help, but it is a try...

Re: Is it just too late for Shenmue III?

When I read arguments like that Shenmue III will have to meet modern gaming desires to be successful, automatically the following question comes to my mind: "Why? Did Shenmue I & II try to meet the mainstream gaming desires of its age (somewhere between the 90's and the new millennium)?"

In my personal view, mainstream gamers have not change a lot from that day. What they desire today, the same things they were desiring in the days when Shenmue first appeared. And I can suspect what these desires are (brutal desires, of course):
guns, gore, killing people for fun, slaughtering people in the streets, cutting heads, blood, lasers, ultra violence, zombies and all these related daemonical desires.

Do you think Yu Suzuki would think to put in a Shenmue III these elements for the shake of the brutal instincts of many (relative with these instincts) mainstream gamers?

Sega has shown some some signs where would easily do this, like e.g. with Shadow the Hedgehog holding a gun... and what else. But, I can not dare to think Yu Suzuki would ever do this. That would be disrespectful towards himself.

Yes, we have all see that a Shenmue III would have magic elements et cetera, but I would never believe that Yu, while creating Shenmue III, would stray from the spirit of the following principle: "Martial arts are used to protect people's lives".

SEGA Nerdcast: Episode 7

We’re back again with the much-anticipated interview with Shenmue’s Ryo Hazuki voice actor Corey Marshall! We talk to Corey about how he originally got the job as Ryo, the infamous “Sailors” quote, if he’s been working on Shenmue 3 and much more!

If you’d like to skip right to the interview, go to the 46 minute and 45 second mark of the show.

http://www.seganerds.com/2013/06/03/ryo-hazuki-voice-actor-confirms-he-hasnt-worked-on-shenmue-3/
« Marshall did say, though, that he’d like to see the series continued, and if SEGA has no intention to do so that they allow Suzuki to have the license .

“ I would like to see it released, and I think a lot of fans would like to see it released. If (SEGA) wanted to release the rights to it, I think giving it to Suzuki is the right move , and I don’t think there would be any sort of animosity or bad blood,” he said. “ As a fan, I would love to see the franchise continued . ” »

Miyamoto Says Nintendo’s Game Ownership Policy Should Operate “Like A Toy Company”
mynintendonews.com/2013/06/13/miyamoto-says-nintendos-game-ownership-policy-should-operate-like-a-toy-company

“What’s really important is viewing Nintendo almost like a toy company where we’re making these things for people to play with,” he said. “As a consumer you want to be able to keep those things for a long time and have those things from your youth that you can go back to and experience again.”

“I really want to retain that product nature of the games that we create so that people can do that and have that experience. To me that’s something that’s very important about entertainment itself. So from the approach of continuing to create things that are entertaining for people, that’s an important direction for me that I want to maintain.”

GameStop says Xbox One DRM decision is 'great news'

http://www.polygon.com/2013/6/19/4446518/gamestop-says-xbox-one-drm-decision-is-great-news

Leading retailer GameStop says Microsoft's decision to reverse its DRM policies is " great news ".

A spokesperson for the retailer told Polygon, "GameStop welcomes today's announcement from Microsoft about changes in functionality for its next-generation console, the Xbox One. This is great news for gamers and we applaud Microsoft for understanding consumers and the importance of the pre-owned market."

Earlier today, Microsoft announced that, following widespread criticism of its DRM features for Xbox One, it would be reversing a decision to implement online check-in policies, which would have restricted the sale of used games. Much of GameStop's profits come from the sale of used games. GameStop's stock price surged six percent in after-hours trading today, following Microsoft's announcement.

Re: Yu Suzuki At Monaco Anime Game Show

I can only guess from the preview frame that one of Yu's jokes during the presentation was to take credit for breaking up the Soviet Union. Well, I say "jokes," but I'd be willing to believe it's true.

A part of the slide (of which we care) is:

1991 The Soviet Union dissolved
1992 Virtua Racing ______ Model1
1993 Virtua Fighter
_________________ Model2(TexMap)
1994 Virtua Fighter 2

I think the following is why Yu Suzuki is mentioning so boldly the dissolve of the Soviet Union!

JM: Which was your favorite technology to work on of all the hardware at Sega?

YS: There isn't really a favorite but the hardware we used for Virtua Racing and Virtua Fighter 2 are the most memorable to me -- the Model 1 and Model 2 boards. It was the first hardware capable of 3D graphics, and I was involved in its development from the drawing board. The chip used in the Model 2 came from military equipment from Lockheed Martin, which was formerly General Electric Aerial & Space's textural mapping technology. It cost $2 million dollars to use the chip. It was part of flight-simulation equipment that cost $32 million. I asked how much it would cost to buy just the chip and they came back with $2 million. And I had to take that chip and convert it for video game use, and make the technology available for the consumer at 5,000 yen ($50) per console or else nobody would buy the hardware. But I did it. And because I was able to do that we were able to put textures on the Virtua Fighter 2 characters.

JM: Was it difficult to have these discussions with Lockheed Martin at the time? They were used to working on military contracts, and not with video game developers.

YS: It was very difficult. They told me they'd make it cheap, but their concept of making it cheap is selling it for a tenth of the price, which is still $200,000. Of course, Sega's president wanted it for $50. If you spend $2 million in development to make one chip, the cost is $2 million per chip. But, if you sell 2 million consoles, that's $1.00 per chip.

So it was tough but we were able to make it for 5,000 yen. Nobody at Sega believed me when I said I wanted to purchase this technology for our games. At the time GE Aerial & Space, CRC, and Evans and Sutherland were the three major companies with virtual simulator technology. And the USSR had collapsed and the government wasn't spending money like they used to on military equipment, and so these companies had to find other avenues of revenue.

Re: Red Baron

"Damon? Do you want the rights for Red Baron back?" I loved that bit!

Nice work you're doing there. Good luck!

Re: New Yu Suzuki's project

While a legitimate source is not provided about this, this is just babbling bubbles on the air, but in the probability this is legit, I wonder if that guy who hypothetically interviewed Yu Suzuki, is the same Russian guy as this one https://twitter.com/search?q=%40chunkachanka%20Yu%20Suzuki&src=typd, who took the picture with the 3 fingers of Yu on the air...

Update: He may not be the same guy, but I found on his following list this https://twitter.com/stranaigr guy (the one shenhaZ mentions above) and probably (is an indication that) both of them are on the same team.

Re: Shenmue mentioned in Sony's giant list of video games

This is the story of my reaction when I accidentally read about it:
WWWWWWWOOOOOOOAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

WWWWWWWOOOOOOOAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

WWWWWWWOOOOOOOAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

WWWWWWWOOOOOOOAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

WWWWWWWOOOOOOOAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

WWWWWWWOOOOOOOAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

WWWWWWWOOOOOOOAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

I'll tell you the whole story... detailed!
- Just woke up this morning and I was looking for a safe search engine to install on my browser. I came through DuckDuckGo (HTTPS/SSL, an excellent one) and then I stumbled across one I haven't seen before, that is Privatelee. I visited its website and, as always, the first search query I put to test a search engine, was ...what else, Shenmue!

I scrolled down the results, where the first were the common ones, and then, I stumbled across the 6th result, which its title was "Sony Wants To Bring Shenmue To PlayStation - NowGamer" ( http://www.nowgamer.com/news/2157082/sony_wants_to_bring_shenmue_to_playstation.html ). I visited it for once, and now that is the interesting part...

While skimming the article, I was like "Hah, I wish that was true..." and then "It's gotta be an old article concerning a rumor." But, then, I saw a very familiar name: "Boyes"! My heart started to pump fast! Furiously, I was looking to find the date of that article! And it was... "Published on Nov 13, 2013". WWWOOOSSSHHH!!!

I rushed and with hands shaking I typed on the address bar "facebook dot com", adding credentials and with a big urge, full of enthusiasm and frightened, I started to write these lines, as a witnessing of a Shenmue fan's reaction caught on ...a post!

P.S.: If that is a small sample of a Shenmue fan's reaction, imagine what would happen when Shenmue I-II HD and/or Shenmue III will officialy be announced and, especially, when you'll get the chance to play it for real... Heart Attack!
