Re: Yu Suzuki At Monaco Anime Game Show

2nd part of my videos, the most interesting I believe:

http://youtu.be/8zbEmRLrhJE
Thank you for the videos. I'll summarize what Yu Suzuki said about Shenmue in Japanese as directly as possible. So, forgive me if some part would not sound natural for English.

*He named Virtua Fighter as the most memorable game of all his games, for he had to go through various hardships while making it. And, he added "Shenmue as well" at the end of the answer.

*He admitted that he regrets Shenmue III hasn't been made yet.

*He has no concrete plans for the next generation consoles, but he'd like to do something for them.

*About "the crowd-funding," he plainly said "there's such possibility," showing no particular interest.

*He wants to make Shenmue III for sure, if a good partner is found. He used the same phrase twice; "if circumstances allow." He's glad that French fans are still talking about Shenmue a lot.

Re: Yu Suzuki At Monaco Anime Game Show

Hi Shenmue fans !
Let me clarify this for you. After a travel of 1200km made just to meet Yu, I was in Monaco this weekend, where I met Richard ( rdk_nl ) from this board. He filmed me when I asked this question http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6p3PjvKA7m0 that was misinterpreted since...

The question was " If Mr. Suzuki ends up being unable to find the financial resources or the good circumstances to develop Shenmue 3, would it be possible to him to decide to finish the story as an Anime in 3D, or even cheaper : as a book ".

His answer was, if I can relate to the translator (really not sure about that) : " Maybe, it's a possibility... Even in that form, I would like to make some more Shenmue ".

2 things :

1. With the conference translation, I still don't know if Yu Suzuki means that "Even in that form...some more Shenmue" means : "If I wanted to do it, I would not make one episode, but a series of anime or books" or "If I chose to release Shenmue on those medias, I would still want to release more Shenmue as a videogame". Maybe one of you japanese speaking fans might translate Yu's answer there, it would be really nice ;-) .

2. I never said anything about a "manga", I spoke about a book (refering in french to the word "romancé" that relates to a novel, a written adaptation of the original script). I hope it's been well translated to Yu Suzuki. It's that french journalist who made the connection between an Anime and a manga book, not me.

Let's hope we'll have something concrete in the near future... Thank you !
Lucky you for having been there. Here's the direct translation of the Q&A in Japanese:

The translator: "Instead of a video game, will there be any chance that you depict the story of Shenmue 3 in other forms, like movie or novel?"

Yu Suzuki: "there will be such possibilities, I think. Even in such forms I want to do something related to Shenmue."

Re: Yu Suzuki At Monaco Anime Game Show

Here a video of the complete conference of the Sunday March 3.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=il8bSiWu_CA

Thank you for the video. Now that I can hear the Q&A part clearly, I've fixed the inaudible part in my translation.

Can you please add time stamps to the duration of each Shenmue question.
Here's the translation of the Shenmue related Q&A:

21:24-TR: What is the most memorable game to you?
21:29-YS: Every game is memorable to me. But, Virtua Fighter is the most memorable as it was
the hardest game to make, having had to go through various hardships. Shenmue as well.

24:01-TR: Is there any regrets?
24:04-YS: Ah... I hate this (kind of question.) Not having been able to make Shenmue III yet, of course.

24:43-TR: Do you have any plan or project for the next-generation consoles?
24:52-YS: I don't have any concrete plans, but I'd like to do something for them.

25:23-TR: What do you think about using the service like crowd-funding, such as Kickstarter?
25:33-YS: There's such possibility, I think.
(Here, the translator took the liberty of connecting the answer of YS with Shenmue III, and the MC got excited.)
15:47-YS: That was a leading question, wasn't it?

26:06-TR: Perhaps you've already been asked this a lot, but everybody wants to know it. How is Shenmue III
going at the moment?
26:17-YS: I want to make it for sure, if a good partner is found.
26:30-YS: If the circumstances allow, I want to make it.
26:41-TR: Everybody wants to help you in anyway.
26:45-YS: Thank you. Merci beaucoup.

26:51-YS: May I speak a little here? French fans, especially, have been caring about Shenmue a lot and
always ask me about Shenmue III. I'm very glad about it.
27:18-YS: I sincerely want to make it, if circumstances allow.

36:50-TR: Now, there's a rumor that Shenmue I or II will be playable soon by downloading with PSN or Xbox...
37:06-YS: Where is it from?
37:10-TR: Huh? He (the questioner) says so.
37:15-YS: Well, I don't get it. Every year a rumor says Shenmue III is coming. I wonder who is making it.

42:24-TR: Do you have a plan to make Shenmue HD?
42:50-YS: The license of Shenmue I and II belongs to SEGA. Now that I've left SEGA, it's not my decision,
but SEGA's, to remake and sell them like that. It'd be possible for SEGA, I guess.
43:27-YS: I could make anything related to Shenmue series, though, by getting the license from SEGA,
if they say OK.

45:10-TR: Instead of a video game, will there be any chance that you depict the story of Shenmue 3
in other forms, like movie or novel?
45:24-YS: There will be such possibilities, I think. Even in such forms I want to do something related to Shenmue.

This download includes Shenmue: The Boat.

Within the relevant folder, double click Game > shenmue > CharSet > ryo hazuki

There is also one called "shenmueextras" which includes two characters, one which looks like Fangmei, the other one I believe is supposed to be Chai.

Shenmue 2D

http://i1360.photobucket.com/albums/r643/YCCTH/Shenmue%202D/TestCharacters006_zpsb02c415c.gif http://i1360.photobucket.com/albums/r643/YCCTH/Shenmue%202D/TestCharacters005_zpse3d09d54.png

Deadline:
Oct 1, 2013.

=====================================================================================================
Project Goals and Scope
=====================================================================================================
***Using the Unity game engine (or Flash), create a non-profit, single level, 2D sidescroller within the Shenmue universe where the player controls Ryo. The 'game' element is to be decided, but I'm really only shooting for a recreation of that level and some minor interactions. The same type of 'detective' gameplay may be implemented, such as when Ryo has to find out more about the three blades or sailors. This is where I can be a little bit more creative, but I don't really have many concrete ideas at the moment. I'm focusing on the social interactions Ryo has with the NPCs and not fighting or QTEs, despite both not being out of the question. It really depends on time and my programming abilities, which are not up to par yet.

***Create Dobuita from Shenmue with modifications to suit the 2D perspective. The goal is to make it large enough to have the same sort of traversal time as in the original game, ie., if Ryo were to walk from Sakurgoaka Park to the bus stop, it'd probably take a couple of minutes, from what I remember anyway. That's the kind of size I'm aiming for.

***NPCs will include as many of the 'main' secondary characters as possible. For now, Nozomi and Tom along with most of the shopkeepers are locked in for creation, while others like Noriko, Eri, Ichiro, Naoyuki, and Honey are secondary priorities. This may change depending on what I feel is best during development.

***Some of the more important interiors of buildings will be created, namely, You Arcade, Liu's Barber Shop, Tomato Convenience Store, Ajiichi Chinese Restaurant, Lapis Fortune Teller, and Aida Flower Shop.

***The artistic style may be the same as the animated GIF above or something more simplified or just simply different. Pixel art or painterly. I have to experiment more to find the right kind that suits my artistic ability, which is somewhat lacking.

=====================================================================================================
Summation and Notes
=====================================================================================================

I'm looking to spend every day on this and complete it as much as I can. This is my attempt at an interactive 2D game, which will give me experience to move on to other for-profit games I'm going to design in the future.

As is the case though, things can get derailed internally or externally. In that event, I may have to cancel the project at any time. Hopefully, that doesn't happen.

About the GIF though, the palette and style was my attempt at drawing Ryo in the King of Fighters 13 style, which relies on nearly 5 tints of a single colour to create gradients/shadows. I recall it being rather tedious drawing pixel art (having only vaguely done it before as a child) and it took about a while to do, even to its incomplete state (which was due to personal reasons). I'm not a person that just draws for the fun. I draw only to complete an objective. In that sense, my artistic abilities are lacking, and yet it allows me to pick and choose styles to emulate or modify. We'll just have to see what I come up with. I'm probably still going to do pixel art though. Can't ignore the charm of it.

Hopefully, a cease and desist doesn't come my way. I'd consider this complex fan art that's 'transformative', but you never know.

I'll update as frequently as I can.

I'm remaking Yokosuka in fancy next-gen 3D.Yes,that's right!

Hello fellow Shenmue-fans.
A lot has happened since I joined the Dojo in 2005, but as far as Shenmue goes, we're still waiting : (. Back in '05, I was just another youth with an unsure future, but my favorite games of all time were, like most f you, the Shenmues (still is, to this day).
Now, almost 10 years later, I'm a professional 3D-artist, working in the video game industry. Fate, right? Anyways, since Yu and the Boys (and Nagoshi, and the Yakuza-guys) can't seem to do neither a remake of Shenmue I&II, nor shenmue III I've decided to take it upon myself to recreate the whole of Shenmue I in 3D, so everything's done for them the day they decide t actually do a remake! Handy right? : D

I posted this thread almost 2½ years ago, some of you might remember that, it was my intention back then to start this project, but work, life, and everything else came between. Now however, I've got a solid job, many interesting sideprojects running, and a lot of time to kill during the weekends! So, thus, the saga begins ;)

Hope y'all like this!
Every model is 100% custom made from scratch , no Shenmue-assets used at all, every texture is custom made, every painting and kanji based on screenshot/photos of my TV, which I've then painted on for maximum accuracy! It's not much.. yet, but it's something!

Everything's default rendered in the fancy Unreal engine atm, which I'm not yet really familiar with.. but I will be! : D

(I think it all looks kinda crap atm , the light is off and so on,but bear with me, I'll learn as I go and I'll see this through : ) )

http://imageshack.us/a/img694/6946/4qmd.jpg
The Dojo, for Shenmue Dojo! : D Lacking a roof atm.. working on that!
http://imageshack.us/a/img821/5779/ec9w.jpg
Gonna light the candles later too!
http://imageshack.us/a/img834/4632/ytat.jpg
All the scrolls and stuff are based on the game's! Still missing the sword-box, working on it!
http://imageshack.us/a/img580/2827/nshg.jpg
The door, with a red-brown inside, and dark brown outside, just like in the game : D
http://imageshack.us/a/img5/5527/em9j.jpg
Really happy with how that hose and bucket turned out : D
http://imageshack.us/a/img801/7669/06ou.jpg
The garden lantern! I added some kanjis, anyone recognise them? : ) I try to stay as true to the original look as possible, while adding "logical" details that current gen tech can handle but the DC could not : )
http://imageshack.us/a/img600/8026/5ip4.jpg
Some bushes and stuff, all very WIP! Note that the fence is now modelled, and not a polygon plane lik in the game ;P
As John Hammond said in jurasic park.. Spared no expense!

I'm working on this a bit every weekend, and sometimes during the wekdays. I'm fulltime employed at Paradox Interactive, and I spend a lot of my freetime developing games for iOS and such, so time is kinda slim but, as you can see, I'm getting somewhere! : D I'll update this thread every now and then when I get the time : D

And I'll see this project through! Probably before Shenmue 3 is released, anyway! xD

Also, thanks to Ziming who posted a lot of Shenmue screens last time I asked for them, without them, I'd have a really hard time creating all this in 3D (I do look in-game a LOT but, some things you just cannot get a good view of xD)

Also, last but not least, I'm ALWAYS in need of good reference material . If anyone got texture packs (i don't use the, but I look at them : )), hi-res screen, screens of weird angles (like, a skyview om Hazuki residence and such) it would be REALLY helpful to get my hand on these : )

Yu Suzuki: Project Berkley - English Subtitled -

http://i.imgur.com/ELyNCBA.jpg
Project Berkley is a bonus GD-ROM that was included with Virtua Fighter 3TB, and released alongside the Dreamcast in Japan 15 years ago. (November 27, 1998)

The video has Yu Suzuki talking about his older arcade games and the concepts behind creating a game like Shenmue. It reveals early pre-rendered footage, character artwork, and full 3d busts of the main characters.

Re: December 3rd Shenmue Day

I feel like the undeniable yet unintentional humor found within Shenmue has been beaten to death. In fact, those that haven't even played the series refer to those same jokes and sadly it's their only knowledge of the game. The series lesser known soft spots are what need to be spread imho, not more of the same humor. These are the elements that potential players don't know exist, yet they could potentially interest them in the series if presented right. Whether it be through playing older titles or supporting the cause for a revitalization, positive outlook is what we need most now.

Re: December 3rd Shenmue Day

@Radar Here's hoping, ideally a really nice collectors edition that has Shenmue 1 and 2 on one disk, then 3 on the second.

First post here, and my apologies, I missed the general tweet section, Been ill lately and only remembered due to Adam's tweet, I have a GAF account, but didn't think to post it.

Here's hoping for the best, while I don't think we'll hear anything until E3 at least, I feel the announcement of at least a few HD ports is more than possible.

Storm would you be willing to create a gaf thread next month on the 3rd?. And maybe even a community thread dedicated to Shenmue?

I'll have to double check the rules for creating a OT etc, but depending if it's allowed, sure.

EDIT: Yeah, OT's must be around a games release from what I can see, so that's not a option, but I'll see about making a new thread.

Re: Blog: What if Shenmue was exclusive to XBox One

I'd like for the series to go wherever it has the best chance of coming to fruition. Empty comments from the competition only help create urgency on the other side. Legitimate or not, some pressure can't hurt.

Microsoft tried, and failed, twice now with that same strategy. They made plenty of Japanese oriented exclusives for the XBox and XBox 360 we never saw in the west, and yet the numbers are what they are.

However, I will grant this. After Microsoft's horrendous summer with the XBox One announcement and DRM and all that, they're in a position of desperation to appease gamers. Perhaps this would be part of that.
Yeah, that's definitely the point. Like I too mentioned earlier, it didn't pan out, but it's either try again or give up at this point when it comes to Japan for the Xbox brand. I'm not suggesting it would or should happen on any end, though I'm not counting it out either. Just to note, generations can and will change drastically over their life span, this one is just getting started after all. What sounds terrible now could be ideal in a few years... or even more terrible.

Given DR's previous sucess as an exculsive last go on 360 during launch and KI being a more western game anyways, yes those decisions to lock down/start up the IP for themselves makes perfect sense. But after the clear failure of Shenmue 2x last time around why would MS choose to double down on something with such a low chance of sucsess historically?
Yeah, that's definitely true and quite obvious. It does show the ability to properly ressurect a series though, which despite everything is still a positive. As for Shenmue itself, it is a sore spot though time heals all wounds. We're multiple generations past that after all, just about everything has changed within the company. At the end of the day I'm simply being open and optimistic because I'd like to play the game in any shape or form, console notwithstanding.

Re: Team Yu needs you!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjXlVnm3bS8

It's announcement time!

For a while now we've been alluding to upcoming changes to the campaign, and the day has finally come to let the cat out of the bag.

As you'll gather from the attached video, one of the big modifications to the monthly Shenmue Tweetathon is the retirement of #GiveYuTheShenmueLicense as the communal hashtag, in favor of the simpler and more versatile #SaveShenmue.

The other big change is that we're now officially expanding the event beyond Twitter and onto other social networks, principly Facebook and Tumblr (because these are the networks currently supported by Thunderclap, the message pre-loading service that has become a staple tool of the campaign).

All the necessary details for participating in the new monthly events, which still take place on every 3rd, can be found at http://TeamYu.net/SaveShenmue - please take a look and lend your support to the January 3rd Thunderclap, which is now accepting sign-ups.

For those who may be confused about why these changes are taking place, let us take this opportunity to explain how we got here.

In January 2012 we began the Team Yu project, following comments from Yu Suzuki in an interview with French fansite Shenmue Master. We were motivated by Yu's continued enthusiasm for his untold story, a conclusion that gamers had spent the past decade awaiting. In the interview, Suzuki made reference to Sega being the owners of the license, and it soon became clear from his eagerness to complete the series that it was Sega who refused to deliver satisfaction to the fans.

At the time, we saw Suzuki coming under undue criticism from gamers who didn't understand his position. He would be blamed for not making Shenmue III, as if it was he that had turned up his nose at the wishes of those who'd been hooked by the saga. So we set out to redress this misconception of indifference and restore Yu's reputation as the most steadfast believer in his own most celebrated work.

On March 3rd of that year, we began partnering with established fan groups to promote a monthly Shenmue Tweetathon, built around the hashtag #GiveYuTheShenmueLicense. This phrase was designed to illustrate Yu's role as the determined proponent for Shenmue, compared against Sega's role as its dispassionate custodian. The implied message was, "Yu cares more about Shenmue than Sega does. If they won't allocate funds to the franchise, they don't deserve to control its destiny."

We couldn't be sure it would catch on, but we wanted to focus on this angle in particular to capture the imaginations of fans who had grown immune to Shenmue war cries over the years, as one campaign after another fell on Sega's deaf ears. We hoped that #GiveYuTheShenmueLicense, and the concept of a regular Tweetathon that not only maintained the pressure on Sega month after month but did so in the public eye where their response (or lack thereof) could be judged by all, would be enough to spark the interest of fans who were weary of signing petitions and writing letters.

Nearly two years on, with the latest Tweetathon reaching an audience of two and a half million in 24 hours, we can say with relief that yes, it caught on. And we're very grateful to you that it did, because without your embracing of the campaign and increased participation every month, we would not be in the position we are today, setting out ways to take this momentum even further.

The expansion onto Facebook and Tumblr is an obvious step, one that was requested long ago, but in the campaign's infancy it was important to concentrate our efforts on one platform. When we had relatively few participants, spreading them across different social networks would not have allowed us to make the required impact anywhere. Now we feel that we have a solid enough core to support this branching out into new territory, with realistic hope that activity on Twitter won't suffer for it.

Meanwhile the change in hashtag has multiple reasons behind it. #GiveYuTheShenmueLicense has served its purpose in opening people's eyes to Yu Suzuki's alignment with the fans in wanting Shenmue III to happen. At the same time however, it has been divisive. Not all fans have understood the intent behind these words, and have dwelled on their disapproval of its literal meaning. In order for the campaign to expand, we need to lift this barrier to entry and simplify the message to #SaveShenmue. This flexible term can be used to address the likes of Sony who have recently suggested an interest in bringing the franchise to Playstation formats, while it also embodies the spirit of the original hashtag: Shenmue is unjustly underutilized by Sega.

Therefore, with uncertainty hovering over Sony's intentions, and nervous speculation surrounding Suzuki's headline appearance at the Game Developers Conference in March, now is the time for all Shenmue fans to unite and spread the message farther and wider than ever before. From January 3rd onwards, on Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr, Team Yu needs YOU to #SaveShenmue!

Re: SHENMUE XMAS SPECIAL 2013 (NEW SHENMUE FANGAME)

I originally planned for all the dialog to be voiced in a fire emblem awakening manner. However, due to other commitments, I don't have the time to ...
Why do you not take us, some of the Shenmue fans here and there(Shenmue500k), to voice Shenmue characters? It could be a fun project for a small part of the fanbase.

Re: ShenmueDojo and YouTube's Content ID

Our channel only has a few content id claims which isn't going to put it in any jeopardy. We just get a few ads placed on our videos, nothing more. No danger of a copyright strike for now.

These new measures effect partners/affiliates who monetize their videos. They have been shielded from it until now, which is why Angry Joe is making a big stink of it.

#SaveShenmue

http://teamyu.net/SaveShenmue/TeamYu.png

We figured it was best to start a new thread that dealt with current campaign details, rather than expecting newcomers to wade through pages of outdated information in the original Team Yu topic .

From March 2012 to December 2013, with the help of several fan groups like Shenmue 500K, Shenmue UK, Shenmue Master, and of course Shenmue Dojo, we have been co-ordinating a monthly Shenmue Tweetathon every 3rd of the month, using the hashtag #GiveYuTheShenmueLicense. This has been supported by the likes of Sumo Digital's Steve Lycett, Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner, gamesTM magazine, 1UP.com, Sega Nerds, comedians Imran Yusuf and Matt Walker, French musician Kavinsky, former Puddle of Mudd guitarist Paul Phillips, Virtua Fighter composer Takayuki Nakamura, and the voice of Ryo Hazuki himself, Corey Marshall.

On January 3rd 2014, the Tweetathon undergoes a New Years evolution, expanding onto Facebook and Tumblr along with Twitter, using the new hashtag #SaveShenmue.

The aim is to keep exploiting the public platform of social media to raise awareness of gamers' discontent with Sega, and their refusal to fund a revival of this unfinished series and provide their customers with the closure we've been awaiting for over a decade. At the same time we aim to appeal to console manufacturers like Sony, who recently expressed an interest in pursuing Shenmue as one of its most highly requested titles for the Playstation 4, asking them to step in and help drag Sega kicking and screaming into the realms of customer satisfaction.

To help make Yu Suzuki's unshakable goal of Shenmue III a reality, we ask all gamers to follow the three simple steps at TeamYu.net/SaveShenmue every month, maintaining the pressure on all concerned. Please spread the word and be heard on the 3rd - Team Yu needs YOU to #SaveShenmue!
