Re: Yu Suzuki At Monaco Anime Game Show

I may sound like an heretic, but.... Shenmue without Yu Suzuki? Why not. Let me explain.... Yu said the plot and project for the Shenmue saga got ready years and years ago. He has no experience about working on modern videogames tech.... his contribution would be invaluable, of course, but it'd be about the "feel" of the game, the little details. These are important for any Shenmue game but if his documents about the Shenmue project are detailed enough, other developers just have to follow them. Anyway I hope he can do Shenmue III himself. He deserves it and I understood it's important for him
So what if he doesn't have any experience with modern systems, neither does Hideo Kojima and look how people buy his milked out franchises time after time, just make up some stupid story about nanobots and the end of the world, put some WEAPONS in and it'll sell like crazy. If your game hasn't got weapons in it, it won't break the charts, crazy/stupid world we live in...

Kotonoha no Niwa [The Garden of Words] by Makoto Shinkai

http://i.imgur.com/GpBbY.jpg

It's the latest work from Makoto Shinkai(5cm Per Second, Voices of a Distant Star, The Place Promised in Our Early Days), an animator/director known for his extreme attention to detail and beautifully rendered, realistically lit backgrounds. He has a talent for making the mundane look beautiful. But don't just take my word for it, look at these images from the film:

Shinkai wrote on his website that this is the first time he is making a "love" story. He added that there were words long before there were characters to write them in this world. The Japanese language during the era when it had no written form is known as "Yamato kotoba." The language during this time had its own pronunciations, before the importation of kanji characters from China.

At the time, "love" was written as "lonely sadness" (koi). Moreover, according to Shinkai, the modern concept of "love" (ai) was imported from the West. While his new Kotonoha no Niwa film is set in the modern era, it will be about "koi" in the original "lonely sadness" meaning — of longing for someone in solitude, as opposed to the modern meaning.

And just as a story, it's probably Shinkai's best film. I appreciated that, rather than being a typical love story, it's much more about the psychological condition of the characters, how they think others view them, and how others actually do view them. And Shinkai is at his best as a visual filmmaker here; it's pleasing to see him move beyond just his typical visual metaphors and make skillful use of editing and montage as well.

Re: YuSuzuki, creator of Shenmue @GDC "Updated"

Cool story! About the Ryu ga gotoku team and especially engine, I still to this day think the DC Shenmue engine is more advanced than Yakuza's engine, because you can interact with anything/anyone, smarter anti-collision system, smarter battle- system just to name a few. In other words the Yakuza engine would do Shenmue 3 no justice. Oh yeah also, let's not forget how much subtitles they put into Yakuza not backed by voice acting.

The best sounding/hottest group is obviously SISTAR.

Re: What operating system(s) do you use? (Poll)

Gentoo is probably the only "big" distro I've never tried. Screw compiling everything.

I don't think I could bring myself to seriously try BSD at this point. I dealt with Linux being a niche OS that barely anyone used (talking desktop use here) for years because I loved it, but now it's finally really coming around with mainstream support. (Thanks valve)

Also, arch is just too good to give up.

In Gentoo, you could use pre-compiled binaries for large packages. I don't think it's worth it to compile every single package. Arch is heavenly though, for a lot of reasons, pacman being one :D .
