Sega Festival 2018 - FES

If anyone wasn't aware, Sega are hosting their own event in Japan this weekend (14/4). SEGA FES 2018 will be taking place in Akihabara of Tokyo and will span across both Saturday and Sunday! There's also going to be a "Special Announcement"!

http://segafes.sega.jp/img/ogimg.jpg

Fellow Dojo member Switch of http://www.phantomriverstone.com has been hard at work on his latest blog post, which details all of the information about the event and has a fantastic translated schedule!

Check out the full details over on his blog post :) - http://www.phantomriverstone.com/2018/04/sega-fes-event-schedule-14-15-april-2018.html

Please use this topic as a general discussion about the event if you are interested in it!

The event is going to be live streamed over on:
Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLHAMwGyDNE
Twitch - https://www.twitch.tv/segaofjapan

We're currently unsure exactly which time slot the "Special Announcement" will feature in, but keep an eye out, and watch the live stream - it should be a great event regardless! =P~

For anyone wishing to know when the event actually starts here's a handy countdown timer :)

John Clarke - Sega Europe Executive Vice President of Publishing

"I'm really excited to be part of this announcement in front of so many Japanese Sega fans. Shenmue represents Segas spirit of challenge, as our number one most requested re-release in the West. We have carefully ported the classic look and feel of the original, in response to the long time fan expectations.
I decided when Shenmue was brought back, i would wear this in celebration. I also decided when Shenmue is brought back, i would have to be with Shenhua.
In Europe, Shenmue was released in 2000, and was an unprecedented title at the time. It was a time when Grand Theft Auto 3 or the Elder Scrolls did not exist. Yokosuka was an unknown world to us in Europe, but that only lent to its exotic charm.
Im in charge of marketing, publishing and sales strategies in Europe. In recent years I've also been in charge of the world wide release of European developed titles, such as Total War. Not only am i excited for the re-release of Shenmue, but i can say there are tonnes of fans worldwide who have been waiting for the re-release of Shenmue, as one of Segas most legendary titles. I think right now, i can hear the applause from around the world."

Masaya Matsukaze (Ryo's JP VA) gearing up to resume role

As per Switch. https://twitter.com/phantom_river/status/985688424815312897

Much like with Corey Marshall, Masaya Matsukaze is getting ready to put on the brown leather jacket again sometime in the near future.

It's possible Japanese and English voice recording might be happening concurrently in Tokyo and LA, if the late May date Corey Marshall gave us holds; but that's just my take on it.

Shenmue I & II - Initial Thoughts

It's basically a collection of all the thoughts I had in the last 2 days surrounding the announcement said game.
Those of you who might have been reading through the vast amount of posts since then around here will recognize a lot of it repeats...

Shenmue I & II just filled me with an incredible amount of writing energy.

Shenmue Dojo Competition - Sacred Spot Guide *NOW ENDED*

https://i.imgur.com/uREQhmi.png

Hi guys! On behalf of the Dojo, I have 3 of the English Shenmue Sacred Spot Guides to giveaway!

It's really easy to enter, just click the link at the bottom of this post and follow the steps! There are 8 ways to enter, and they're all really simple, especially for the majority of you guys, since you probably have already done the things that are required already :D

The ultimate goal for this giveaway is for the new Youtube channel to gain some traction. Along with the other outlets the Dojo provides such as Twitter, Facebook etc...As you may be aware the old Youtube Channel wasn't actually a part of the Dojo and was ran by an individual using the Dojo name, so Peter has been hard at work behind the scenes trying to get the new channel up to speed and jam packed with content for you all!

You can enter the giveaway here -

https://gleam.io/AxlSi/shenmue-dojo-sacred-spot-guide-english-version-giveaway

Best of luck guys, I will email the 3 winners this time next week! Hopefully...it'll be you! :D Haha, cheers!

Famitsu Article

Famitsu have a two page article on the game. I know we have a few people who like to translate this stuff and there may be some new info included.

Re: Famitsu Article

Gamefront.de, one of the best video game news outlets in Germany have a short summary of the Famitsu article. I'll give you guys a quick translation of it.

Release: 2018 (Europa)

Shenmue 1 & 2 with modern and classic controls/gameplay scenes 16:9

Shenmue 1 & 2, at Sega and D3t is about 70% complete, says the latest Famitsu issue.

Furthermore, the article says the game will have a modern and a classic control scheme. In the modern control scheme, the hero Ryo will be moved by the left analog stick, whereas in the classic control scheme he will be moved by the d-pad.

In regular gameplay sequences, the picture will be displayed in 16:9. Event scenes (cutscenes) however, will be kept in the original 4:3 proportions.

Just a quick translation of a translation by myself. Hope I could help you guys out.

Re: Famitsu Article

Alright, just registered to bring my input on that. BlueMue is 100% right. Stop spreading false information about the aspect ratio. Yes, the remaster is "stretched" because this is HOW the game is supposed to look. Back then, the game was developped with CRT in mind and was meant to be stretched. What evidences do I have ? Pretty simple.
Here's an official screenshot of Shenmue from SEGA:
http://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/2018/16/5/1524237875-forklift.jpg
As you can see, it's at 640x480 but with black bars. Which according to people here, is how the game is supposed to be display. It's true, it's the native resolution of the game. BUT pay attention to the watch. It's not round:
http://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/2018/16/5/1524236067-corrected2.jpg
As you can see, the watch on the HUD is 69*78 pixels.
But if you take the picture inside the black bars and stretch it at 640*480 like the remaster does...
http://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/2018/16/5/1524236068-corrected3.jpg
TADA ! It's now perfectly round at 78*78 pixels.

You don't believe me yet ? Well, take a look at the game on Dreamcast when captured with a capture device, so displaying the game how the Dreamcast intend to display it and not how the Dreamcast process it...
https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YbCRlCMonJs/V0MItsL40KI/AAAAAAAAQqo/j4RNPGOCMgsK8spdoJVduq9l5YhsuTxRACLcB/s1600/shenmue%2Bsnow.jpg
As you can see, round again. And the proportion of Ryo match.

More simple, here's a screen capture from the Xbox version of Shenmue II, so without any dreamcast internal resolution shenanigans...
http://shenmuedb.com/wp-content/gallery/shenmue-ii/183554-shenmue2_001_large.jpg
The watch is round again and Ryo has the same body proportions. And the watch is again 78*78 pixels.

Now here's the remaster screenshot:
http://shenmue1-2.sega.jp/img/ss/shenmue03.jpg

As you can see, Ryo's body match. I even made a gif to prove it:
http://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/2018/16/5/1524235572-comparison.gif

So please, don't spread false information that may mislead d3t ltd's work. I seen bad stuff said about them already, so please don't spread misinformation.

Re: Famitsu Article

People didn't believe me earlier when I said that round objects like the watch are meant to be round and are only round when the image fills the 4:3 format. Thanks for pointing this out in images, I think that makes the message a lot more clear.

Shenmue III gets provisional PEGI rating

As per Gameblog's Romain, who noticed Shenmue III also now had a retail listing on Amazon FR; https://twitter.com/RomainMahut/status/988419535014367233

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Dbetx48WAAI_7FG.jpg

Pretty sure the white on black placeholder cover has appeared before, but what appears to be new is the provisional PEGI rating.

In order to get a provisional rating, the publisher has to pay a fee, fill out a questionnaire about the game's content, and allow PEGI to play a portion of the game and review video sequences. From what I can gather, this happens when the publisher is moving forwards with the retail process (pre-orders, etc) and looking to get games certified by platform holders.

Not that it means a whole lot, but I've gone back through a few games Deep Silver have distributed and saw they had a provisional rating within 6-8 months of release.

Safe to say the wheels are turning in the background, though.

May 3rd: 75th Tweetathon

https://s14.postimg.cc/fezwdduw1/May3rd-_Dojo.png

Hello Dojo! As you're probably aware by now, Shenmue I+II are available to preorder , which brings a close to the #SaveShenmueHD campaign. So what happens next?

This Thursday, May 3rd, marks the 75th edition of the monthly Shenmue Tweetathon, so there's no better opportunity as an organized community to celebrate #ShenmueSaved, the hashtag chosen by Sega to promote their upcoming release. There'll also be giveaways throughout the day on the @TeamYu Twitter account, posing questions based on the Campaign Timeline available on the newly updated TeamYu.net .

With the campaign project reaching its conclusion, from June onwards fans are invited to continue tweeting an all-purpose #Shenmue hashtag every 3rd to help promote the series in a viral fashion, attracting new interest in Shenmue I+II and Shenmue III to drive sales and support the future of the franchise. Above all, it's just a really fun way to connect with other fans around the world and share in our enthusiasm for a legendary video game, so it would be wrong to let the tradition go to waste now that the campaign is over. We can all just enjoy it now, as it's become as much a part of being a Shenmue fan as looking for sailors and drinking soda in a very particular way. :)

We'd like to thank everyone for your support throughout the campaign, and have gone into more detail on this via Facebook . We hope to see you on Thursday for the 75th Tweetathon celebration!

In other news: https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2018-05-16-thq-nordic-posts-revenue-increase-of-673-percent-following-acquisition-of-koch-media

THQ Nordic posts 673% revenue increase following acquisition of Koch Media. Excluding Koch Media revenue, THQ Nordic still up 64 per cent.

Guess we know how they're funding the delay.

New Shenmue III pics from THQ Nordic financial presentation

Small clip of new footage...! We get to see the little girl introduced in MAGIC 2018 in motion, and a small clip of Ryo in a village. And I mean small. It is from today's THQ Nordic financial presentation: https://tv.streamfabriken.com/thq-nordic-cmd-2018?seek=4323

Skip to the slides where they briefly talk about Shenmue. Around slide 20.

EDIT: looks like (what I hope to be) old, outdated Ryo and Shenhua models in a slightly different Gamescom teaser. Interesting stuff.

Re: KS Update #82: Shenhua finds her voice! JP VO begins.

There is something very familiar looking on that screen in the background in the photo of Haruka at the mic.
Anyone else spotted and recognized that bit from the cave?

https://i.imgur.com/SyyNYvj.jpg

Anyway, an unexpected update indeed. It's a bit sad another major character can't be voiced by the original actor or actress. I'm sure Haruka will deliver a compelling performance but one wonders if Masaya will be the only one returning for the original cast.

Re: Random Shenmue III Thoughts

I've been with contact with Robert Pontow from Deep Silver, who is working on Shenmue 3.
I told him about Eric Kelso, Paul Lucas, and Lisle Wilkerson, and how they want to return to Shenmue 3. This is his reply:

Hi, thanks for contacting me. Would you have any email addresses of the voice actors, their agents or any other means of contacting them? Unfortunately I wouldn't be able to discuss anything over FB, so we would need to take an official way to get in contact with the voice actors. But I am sure that Yu Suzuki would be happy if we can secure the same crew for Shenmue 3. Best regards

This means there is hope yet. I will try to find a way to get in touch with those three, I'll tweet Shenmue AM2 podcast who had been in touch with them recently. If you guys know anything that might help, let me know too

This also confirms my suspicion that they didn't know that the VA's wanted to return

Re: New Shenmue III pics from THQ Nordic financial presentat

I think in the case of these kinds of suffixes (sorry, I don't know the proper name for them.. honorifics?) like -san, -kun, -chan and so forth, there are some distinctions between them and the types of titles and nicknames we have in English. There seems to be a kind of formality and a subtle expression of respect for tradition that we don't really have as much of in the West. So in those kinds of situation I think it works better to not translate them, especially since they can be picked up pretty quickly and understood in the context of the situation. Of course it gets a bit muddled as at this point in the story we're seeing Chinese characters using Japanese phrases.

As for "Oh, it's you," I think that's something that we could reasonably expect a very young kid to say. The child pretty much looks like a toddler so that seems like it could be a realistic reaction when seeing someone she has met recently.

Small bump, Ryuji Iuchi brought this photo up on Twitter the other day. Switch graciously translated the tweet as the machine translation wasn't very clear.

Unfortunately this had nothing to do with Shenmue, seems the naming convention was just a coincidence. We'll probably be hearing more about the music sometime in the future anyway, though.

New (old) Shenmue Online gameplay

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIub0Ok5zQs

So I was digging around the internet, and found some gameplay footage from Shenmue Online that I had never seen before. I thought it was the TGS 2005 footage, but it is different. Apparently, this is from T2 Technology Holdings' 2005 strategic conference on November 15th, 2004. Interesting stuff.

Shenmue News | Shenmue III Delayed Shenmue I & II Pre-Orders

Happy 3rd everyone! It's that time of the month where we celebrate all things Shenmue (really that's everyday, but you know what I mean). If you missed my last video, I'm trying to do a monthly Shenmue News series where I update the community on everything going on in terms of games updates, rumors, and within the community itself. My goal is to have one of these out every 3rd of the month to align with the Shenmue tweetathon. I have other Shenmue videos in mind that I may release as a substitute if news is slow any given month. This video covers the Shenmue III Delayed Release Date, a rumor from my last video that I received a source for, the THQ Nordic Presentation, Shenmue I & II Pre-Order status update, and some information about the Tweetathon moving forward. Hope you enjoy the video and please leave feedback. These videos are for the community and I'm always open to suggestions on how to improve them.

Re: Random Shenmue HD Thoughts

I keep thinking about what Yu Suzuki said in a past interview, that he was hoping for some kind of synergy with SEGA.
(If someone finds this interview, it would be great)

http://www.phantomriverstone.com/2017/08/game-watch-interview-with-yu-suzuki.html

Q: At the moment, there are a lot of revivals of previous or classic games. Do you have any plans for a revival of Shenmue I and II? I think there would be a lot of people who would try them if they were available on PS4.

YS: The Shenmue IP belongs to SEGA, so I'm not in a position to give a direct answer. Personally, I also think it would be good if something could be done in connection with Shenmue III. It would probably also have a synergistic effect.

Shenmue 3 have nothing, when the first (and true) beautiful and official trailer (not technical video) will be show at E3 2019 you can be sure the game will be realase after one year minimum. If you check all statistics of all videos games you will consider and discover the true about Shenmue 3 realase.

And what if the first GAMEPLAY TRAILER comes out in 2018?

I don't get this obsession with E3. There are other events in the gaming industry.

Re: Random Shenmue III Thoughts

Hum, all of this make me curious :
How much time worth of dialog will there be stored in the game ?
How much was it for SH1 and SH2 ?

I did a little digging around and found out that for the first game the script had about 42,000 lines of dialogue and a count of 330,000 English words, according to this community gaming database . If you take the average reading speed of 180 words per minute, the entire Shenmue 1 would have roughly over 30.5 hours of recorded dialogue audio. More surprisingly, the script was bigger than RPGs like the first Mass Effect and Tales of Vesperia!

Hopefully Shenmue 3's budget will hold and we can have once again a fully voiced game.

Re: Shenmue II NTSC - J Editions

It seems to be impossible to find any pictures of the Dorikore version.
Does the cover it even look different, like the rest of this rerelease lineup?

It's just the standard edition with a sticker slapped onto it, labeled Dorikore and maybe an extra spine. I have it and would take a pic of it but I just moved, so that discounted version is buried somewhere among other piles of stuff. I will post a pic whenever I find it, but it is really nothing to write home about. I guess it's uncommon because like the limited edition the sticker was on top of a shrink wrap, so it is hard to locate a mint condition one nowadays.

Edit: Found a pic while browsing...

Shenmue Inspired Travel Series

Hi guys, I recently went on my travels over to China and Japan, and visited quite a few places along the way. I took heaps of photos and video footage, with the intentions of creating some sort of video series when I got back.

Part 1 -
https://youtu.be/mXRc6z4SEpk
In this first part I visited the Beijing Zoo, The Great Wall of China, Temple of Heaven, Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City.

Part 2 -
https://youtu.be/kqvyGUQWcWc
In this episode I visited the Terracotta Warriors Army, The Master of the Nets Zen Gardens, The Venice of the East Canal District, and Tiger Hill (Pagoda / leaning tower)

____________________________________________________________________________________________________

Why is this considered a Shenmue Inspired Travel series? Well I believe that without Shenmue I would never have ever made it to these wonderful countries, it's because of Shenmue that I was inspired to make the journey to see some of the places from our beloved series. Whilst I didn't end up visiting Hong Kong or Guilin, what I did get to see in China, in my opinion was some of the things that Yu Suzuki would have originally seen on his travels, and it's these things in turn that I believe went on to inspire Shenmue aswell. I also did the one thing that's on every Shenmue fan's bucklet list - visit Dobuita Street in Yokosuka! :)

I will update this original post whenever a new Part of the series is available! Thanks for checking out the videos guys, and I hope you enjoy them 8) !

Re: The Shenmue Dojo - past, present and future.

Quick update in here for now, and Mattis ( TheTimeRanger ) now joins Mr.Rod as part of the Designer/Coder group so he will have full permissions across the site, and is part of the team.

Its been 2 months now of sleepless nights, countless design ideas and full site restructuring.... but we are almost there! If we thought we were working hard before, then now is a big step up. Everyday of the week is now dedicated to working on the new site. Id say we are about 70% complete, with quite a few more things to do, but we are getting there. Its crunch time folks, so go visit the current site because its weeks away from going. Whilst its not completely 100% official yet, we are shooting for a release on July 20th . This could change slightly, but we want the new site up and functional by the end of the month, for stress tests and functionality before Gamescom rolls around. The site and forums will be offline for 3 day s, but our social media outlets will still be open, as well as being welcome to visit other community sites such as Shenmue Master, 500K, Team Yu, Shenmue Forever, Phantom Riverstone and others that are out there.

I will try and keep you updated as much as possible as we push towards the end. Now, wheres the coffee....
