Call of Cthulhu game(s) announced (H.P. Lovecraft, son)

Postby Henry Spencer » Fri Feb 26, 2016 3:21 pm

H. P. Lovecraft's famously twisted universe will be coming alive on consoles and PC in 2017, in the official video game adaptation of Chaosium's pen & paper RPG Call of Cthulhu. The Cthulhu Mythos has grown to become one of the largest shared universes ever envisioned, giving birth to countless stories, novels, and even movies ever since the original publication of Lovecraft's The Call of Cthulhu. Today, discover the game's first screenshots, which showcase the dark, oppressive ambiance of the game's semi-open environments built in Unreal Engine 4.

Developed by seasoned studio Cyanide, Call of Cthulhu is an RPG-Investigation game with psychological horror and stealth mechanics, set in a deeply immersive world. On a mission to find the truth behind the death of an acclaimed artist and her family on a backwater island, the player will soon uncover a more disturbing truth as the Great Dreamer, Cthulhu, prepares its awakening...

Also, apparently Frogwares, developer of the Sherlock Holmes adventure game series also have a HP Lovecraft game in the works too. WHich I am guessing with be more of a straight up adventure game vs. Cyanide's version which is a "stealth-investigation RPG" hybrid.

Both look and sound great. H.P. Lovecraft horror games galore. Good times.

Our Open world investigation Lovecraftian game. Yes, you read well. Open World, Investigation and Lovecraft.

It’s bigger than what we have ever done before and we feel it’s the right next step for us, bringing the investigations to be free and opened in the city. We also believe that Lovecraft universe, Cthulhu Mythos is the right setting for the game.

The Lovecraft/Cthulhu setting is dear for us for years.

I can't really get excited for any of these right now just because, honestly, most attempts at making things "Lovecraftian" in videogames fall flat. There are the odd instances where it feels just right (Bloodborne totally nails the feel of Lovecraft's more surreal, dreamlike stories, like Dagon for example; Penumbra nails the more common storytelling style of a Lovecraft tale, as a first-person descent into madness and all), but more often videogame developers seem to think it's acceptable to just include tentacled monsters, thinking that that, in itself, is enough to make something Lovecraft-esque. It isn't.
So y'know, it's cool that people are attempting to make some more direct "adaptations," I guess, but it'll take some serious proving to really get me interested. "Lovecraft" has become kind of a trendy name over the past decade, used mainly by people that have no idea what it should actually imply.
