may I suggest a TV show instead.

ABCs Day Break :P good show... watch it ;)

Anyhow as for games I suggest Tales of Symphonia... uh WHAT?
Yes... why? It has the same kind of feel with the overwhelming amount of optional cutscenes and side stories that you can miss and have to play through again to get them all :P ...also the battles are just fun.

I found Bully to be quite reminescent of Shenmue. There's quite a bit of detail, a day and night cycle, and a nice fighting system that you dont have to master to be good at. It runs kinda choppy on the PS2, but they're updating it and rereleasing it for the Xbox 360 and Wii as Bully: Scholarship Edition. If you've got either of those two next-gen consoles, I'd wait for it. Damn good game on the PS2, well deserving of next gen hardware to run it at a smooth framerate and decrease the loading times.

After playing Yakuza... for quite some time... I find it to be closer to Parasite Eve than Shenmue.... as far as the setting feels like a cop drama... pretty much like Parasite Eve... anyhow it has night and day but unlike Shenmue the times are set during certain chapters... so time does not pass simply by you running around and blowing time.... also hardly any of the NPCs can be interacted with.... (it also looks ugly thanks to poor looking NPC models!!!)

I second the Grim fandango relpy, Great game allround!

Since we are talking immersion: I really liked Beyond good and Evil. Great story in a sci-fi setting, did pretty much everything right.

Beyond Good and Evil was a brilliant game. What a nice little surprise that turned out to be.

I'll go with saying Fahrenheit (Indigo Prophecy). It has a very similar feel. Unfortunately, it's not nearly as long, but I really enjoyed the game, and seeing how cheap it is, and how easy it is to pick up a copy, I'd go for it.

Eh, it's not the worst thing that I actually like. I could come out and say that I like Panic! at the Disco or something like that to just encourage it more.

There are no games even remotely like Shenmue.

This is the beautiful thing about Shenmue. The creators actually worked their arses off to create such a life-like game, that it's one of a kind. Even today, no game can be comparaed to Shenmue.

Even though the series is dead, it was an amazing effort.

And Farenheit is the worst game ever made.

Yakuza is really the closest thing we have like Shenmue.
Too bad its so poorly done.
I was playing it just last night to give it another chance and just couldnt get over how poor the fighting system is and the english dialogue.

I change my mind and say Oblivion holds up to Shenmue terms of interaction. In that aspect, it is very much like 'mue (with better, but repetative voice acting)
