What is Appaloosa's relationship with Sega then. Are they just an independant company?

Yes, Appaloosa Interactive is independent and was founded in 1982 in Hungary as Novotrade. They expanded there development house to the US in 1989. They worked with Sega, to create the Ecco the Dolphin series.

They seem to be going strong although they haven't developed a title in 2 years.
