How so? It has to be something similar to online pass... cause it'll be kind of hard to force used game drm on an offline game. And that's still exactly how it is now. Nothing new Online Passes exist, even Sony has online passes.

Capcom already have 2 SP games on PSN that require you to be online to play. EA have already got rid of online passes so they must have something else in store.

Yeah, I'm talking about disc based games, Capcom can go fuck themselves with their online singleplayer shit.

I just don't understand how it can be up to publishers, there's no authentication. :X

btw, you got a video or a link? I'd like to know exactly what he said.

Who Really Cares? wrote: Jack Trenton just confirmed on GT that DRM is still up to the publishers so you might still get the same stuff as X1. Can see some publishers like EA forcing an always online deal.

But he said Sony will not stop any from doing it.

Are you sure he's not talking about online multiplayer passes?
Even if so, cant imagine any publisher will opt into this after everything thats happened and how gamers will spend their money.
It's highly questionable because they clearly stated all PS4 GAMES not just first party but all games will be restriction free. Cant imagine they would generalize so firmly that much and then back peddle to letting some publishers do it.

As I said above it was on live TV. Also said Agent by R* is still be made but again said they would have to ask them and confirmed The Last Guardian is on hiatus.

I'll believe it when I see it then. He could have been talking about online passes. It's highly questionable after the event yesturday in saying all PS4 games can be traded with no restrictions.

I mean pay attention to the wording and everything going on here.
It's so generalized and restriction free for "any" used games.

Yeah it could just mean they are keeping it how it is now but seems like a wait and see thing.

^^This all basically just means things will remain as they are now. They can't do anything about offline games.

Xbone= doa

And I'm not talking about the game!

Sony reiterates any DRM on used games will be left up to the publisher

While PS4 itself won’t block pre-owned games, Sony has said any DRM is up to publishers, a sentiment which has been said before.

According to SCEA boss Jack Tretton, “the DRM decision for third-party games will be up to publishers,” he told GTTV. First-party titles will not have DRM.

PS4 will not require an always online connection and, it will not block the use of second hand titles, according to Tretton last night and Sony Worldwide boss Shuhei Yoshida back in February.

Yoshida said that any DRM on used games will be left up to the publisher in question, so today’s comment isn’t really a surprise.

The interview with GTTV just concluded and should be up shortly.

Same as it always was then.
Sony and the PS4 itself are not blocking anything.
If 3rd partys wanted to impose restrictions this gen they could have too, but they didnt. And thats exactly the same situation we will have with PS4 next gen too. If a 3rd party wants to have an always online MMO type of game to connect to the internet and have users pay a fee for a subscription or online pass then they can do it.
Nothing is really going on there.
Meanwhile MS requires the DRM with every game as its built into the system and requires you to connect online.

It's just the same as it is now, Sony aren't giving the publishers any more tools to implement all that stuff than what they already have. So I can't imagine it being particularly widespread, and Sony has still won my support (by doing nothing). MS have xboned themselves, they will be forced to backtrack on some off this stuff eventually, surely.

The PS4 is inherently open and free of restriction, just like PS3 was. So yes if a publisher wants to fuck themselves they still can just like they could on PS3. Only they didnt because they know it's stupid and goes against the platforms open nature. Jack pretty much HAS to say that just incase a rouge developer wants to experiment in having their game boycotted.
Game set match.

"For instance Playstation 4 won't impose any *new* restrictions on the use of PS4 games."

For it to be up to publishers, it would have to impose new restrictions such as the NFC tag chip. It doesn't. There's no way publishers can DRM an offline game on PS4. Online Passes can technically be done on every online system, ever. It's just that they were introduced this gen. Nothing new here, folks. So no words now, only dreams. :D
