That word didn't come flying out of other dimension because of luck, you know. I used it precisely because I knew somebody would come here and write that ICO is just an environmental puzzle game.

I didn't play a game that would be unique gameplay-wise since ages. I think we are beyond that era. Every vital ingredient has been discovered. Now it's just about how you mix them and what spices you use.

nah, i just think that devs are growing to lazy and to greedy to look past safe formulas and dream with new, daring concepts. i feel this medium is the one that still has a lot of terrain to cover, if there is courage to think outside the box and take risks

I dunno. its not like you can "poof" bring something into being. Its one thing to have a concept, its another entirely to make it work. Theres certainly a number of indie developers (and even a number of larger ones) still coming up with great ideas, but I think people sometimes focus a bit too much on trying to find parallels between games. Truth is the slump in quality is just as much consumers fault as it is developers.

Nah, you can't go further gameplay-wise. Adding new graphical effects, making games bigger and more complicated, thinking up new subsystems... It doesn't change the core formula. It can't. The basics have been established. This is the sign that the medium has matured. Now people will either a) go batshit about experimentation while in reality they just rape old ideas (like Cage) b) be creative with the great tools that have been created (like Ueda) c) milk the shit out of gamers by offering half-assed products that try to fool people with gore and/or sex (like Bleszinski).

If you want to name every game that has stolen from something else we would be here all day naming series and games like MGS,Sonic,Xenogears,Ys and a few thousand more. As long as it works well and fused with your idea in such a way it becomes your own I see no harm.

Exactly. Everything dervies from something else. Nothing is 100% original anymore.

That's cool, I came across it by accident when I searched for HD Shenmue videos on YouTube, I never really watch these kind of YouTube reviews but I really enjoyed listening to him talk about his first experience of Shenmue, it brought back some great memories.

Yeah all my gaming reviews come from YouTube now and uh 70 subs...yeah I'm nuts. His channel is my fave of all of them though.

Sucks this won't come stateside. Like the PSP games the series is no longer leaving Japan. I may just have to import.

Must've just been a paycheck then, but I remember seeing his name on somthing when I was trying to coax my contact at nintendo into throwing me a bone. I should be a con artist instead of a game designer.

Yes, and he said it bluntly - no kind of involvement with Xenoblade. He doesn't even seem to know Takahashi more than "Ah, yes, that nice man that makes Xeno games."

I think thats another culture shock kind of thing. I've seen people freak out over meeting Japanese game devs, but aside from Suda I've never really seen Japanese devs freak out over meeting each other, or a western dev.
