I loved this just for the cheese factor.
It's a blatant Bon Jovi wanna be with a old TV series intro presentation.
. It's Brilliant at being this way on purpose.
Samurai & Cowboy, well we all know that is awesome.
Should get a nice chuckle.

The first that I can think of : MGS3

I like the way they built it up until the moment Snake jumps. Great stuff.

This one came to mind instantly for me.

Memorable intro, swordplay, a look at the personality and style of each character, class song and a naked chick.

Well known now and classic.
Then this was groundbreaking and still to me one of the greatest openings to a game ever.
It was not overly complicated but emotional and to the point.
Also this came before the title screen. NES owners had their minds blown.

EDIT:

Kingdom Hearts II

Spoilers for KH1 and KH:COM. I just love how they go from one scene to the next telling the story of the previous games and making it feel so natural. Also love the music.

Hotel Dusk

In just five minutes it gives you a great feel for the character and you start to feel a little bit for the guy.

Since I've been in such an Ys kick lately, I may as well post some of those.

First is from Ys: Book I (both the DS version and the PC "Eternal" version).
Excellent artwork throughout, an amazing medley-style orchestral music track, and a bunch of quick shots chronicling Adol gaining an interest in adventure, growing up, traveling the world, setting sail for Esteria, and subsequently washing up on shore after he gets shipwrecked in a storm.
It's great how Falcom can so effectively go over story points like this with only a well constructed series of shots.

Second is Ys: Book II.
A bit of a departure from the first intro in that it features the trademark synth-rock the series is more known for, rather than something orchestral. Regardless, the music is again excellent (one of my favorite tracks from the Books I & II soundtrack, actually), and the intro again effectively tells the story of the small gap between the first game and the second, as Adol is magically flung miles into the sky, subsequently touching down on the floating land of Ys.

I'm planning on typing up a review on these two games sometime soon, but I'm having trouble starting it.

I'll be lazy and point out the ones I posted from Riku's old topic.

OL you bastard, you're ruining my Okami phase. I am trying to enjoy for a second time my love for this game but you keep making me more interested in ys.
GRRR!!!!

The intro for Okami isn't short but I love the music and the presentation of telling a story on the scroll is something I love. It has a epic sense (not loosely using that term either) The artwork like the game is fantastic and one of the few times where the intro and gameplay stay the same and look equally fantastic.

My fave part of the intro is the second part.

Next is another scroll type intro.
Simple music and art is great. I am sure many of you seen it by now but hell it's worth seeing again. To me the last real notable entry to the Zelda franchise.

Sorry.
Just keep in mind that the first couple of Ys games are extremely old-school. It isn't much more complicated than doing fetch quests and defeating enemies to level up.
It's mostly the simplicity and "small"-scale that appeal to me. Not sure if that'll put you off at all, I just don't want you to get your hopes up too high. And the version you would probably play (the DS one) has plenty of flaws compared to other better versions of the game that have been released.
I would recommend holding off until XSeed releases the PSP version (Ys I & II Chronicles), which is supposed to be one of the best versions of the first two games available.
So continue with your Okami phase, old boy.
Ys will wait for you.

And on that note, the intro for Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim
:devillaugh:

Just more anime-style awesomeness like the first two games. I actually have a folder on my mp3 player labeled "dorkiness" which is full of a mix of anime and videogame music, and the music in this intro just had to be put in there after my recent "rediscovering" of the series.
Really great stuff.

I've always loved the inanity of this game. This is the very first scene (anticipating the first asskicking session) and right from the start you can tell that this game went far and beyond its Fist of the North Star to something much more disturbing and hilarious. It's also a good lead into a series of extremely fun and deranged cutscenes, and sets a great tone for this mad, mad game.

While this cutscene is almost too misleading regarding the actual game, as an intro, it marked a big rift of this series' towards better production values and a bigger budget. I'm not sure who made the cinematics in the game (not Shirogumi unfortunately) but it certainly decreed a stamp of quality right from the start in this game from a unique series.

The most cinematic game of its time, Kojima made his first "movie" with this game:

RE (PSX) intro. Don't tell me you don't love it:

So bad it's good (and if you think about it, it actually really fits the B-movie feel it's supposed to give off)
