Anyone ever walk into a gamestore and see a CIB game you have and knowing your copy is not CIB just offer them 10$ for the case? I have done it a couple time in PnT. Be surpised it works. I doubt Gamestop would tho.

Yeah we used to do that. Well when I was there.
GS does not care about cases. It's harder for retro games tho. Some places give it to you some will sell.

A friend of mine told me "don't copy ideas, steal em. If you copy them, you're only recreating the idea, but if you steal it, you know what makes it good. A person will play your game and say 'hey its kinda like this game...but not really'."

I keep thinking about that, and applying it not just to concepts having to do with function, but also aesthetics.

It sounds a lot worse than it really is. Its more about adaptation and expansion.

To give an example, in Ardere Crystallum there is a huge tank called the Howler. It handles overworld travel, battle preparations and facilitates most of the character specific exposition. Its made up of a million different ideas. I loved the hideout in Suikoden, and how you had access to all of the playable characters there but felt it didn't do much for the actual battles. I also loved the idea of the Caravan from Shining Force 2, but felt it had to little interaction. The name and appearance (which I'm still not done drawing) is taken from one of my favorite movies, Howl's Moving castle.

I took a bunch of ideas, but when I was playing around with a map menu, it felt incredibly different from all of the things i took from.

If you want to name every game that has stolen from something else we would be here all day naming series and games like MGS,Sonic,Xenogears,Ys and a few thousand more. As long as it works well and fused with your idea in such a way it becomes your own I see no harm.

Funny most things are inspired by or created with the idea of another in some shape or form. Which makes me wonder sometimes who had the first creative idea that didn't copy,imitate or borrow from?

Thing is, Ico feels unique, but it's really just an environmental puzzle game. It's Tomb Raider with analog control, fixed camera angles, and much, much better art design. Gameplay-wise, it's not particularly unique at all. But it's still an absolutely excellent game because of how well it's all executed, plus the amazing design elements.
