That Japanese cover is so badass. It looks like Lupin the 3rd meets Shaw Brothers Kung Fu or something.

Europe pretty much always gets the white background with the name for FF games. Have to say I prefer it over the US covers. The only one I'm sort of on the fence about if the cover for X.

Yakuza 3 vs Ryu Ga Gotoku 3.

Japanese boxart was much better. Classy black and white cover vs half-face. Suppose the dragon makes up for it a bit..

They're all good, but if I had to choose, I'd probably say I prefer the European version overall.

I prefer the Japan version because of the name, it's such a wacky name, but I love it.

I prefer the Japanese box art, since even though it's the same, it actually has colour. :)

The Y3 box we got was awful and some of the worst out there but we got a better box for Y4 then Japan:

Definately. I feel the same for Dead Souls, too.

I love the original, Japanese one. The US one isn't bad, though. I dislike the European one because they've filtered the shit out of that artwork and pretty much made it look like crap.

BTW, covers are great and all, but in many cases it's actually the inlays that hide the real beauty.

Pretty easy win for me on this one: the Japanese version. The US version is fine, except that it's always struck me as really bland. I don't even see it when I go to the store anymore. It just blends in, which is unfortunate for such a good game. Too much gray and white, with the only real color in it being a dull shade of yellow.
JP version has a darker background (making the logo stand out a bit more), along with a better little flourish of color thanks not just to the yellow of his coat and the fire in the background, but the red of his electricity (not to mention the fact that red electricity is pretty unusual and eye-catching on its own). Only problem with it is that the angle of the background is just... weird. It makes it look like the city goes up on a slant, wih the roogtops not facing directly to the sky, but leaning at an odd angle.

Japan always wins. They seem to appreciate artwork more while we get the shitty CG.

I wouldn't say always.
Nothing wrong with cg, as long as it's used well (the Infamous one isn't cg by the way; it's just computer-colored to have that look).
I prefer the cg US cover for Dirge of Cerberus, for example, as opposed to the Japanese version, which uses artwork.

The problem is, the Japanese cover just looks like a totally random piece of concept art, rather than a legitimate cover design. It's like they opened a book of concept art, closed their eyes, pointed to something, slapped it against a boring gray background, and that's what ended up as the cover.
The US cover may be cg, but it still comes off as a very deliberate piece of covert art, besides also being a very high-quality bit of rendering work.

I also don't see what's so bad about cg in general when, let's face it, the games themselves are cg. It makes less sense to have a shot of artwork on the cover, something which likely never shows up in the game, than it is to have a cg rendering, a more legitimate representation of the game's contents.
