^^Yeah, the stealth in MGS is probably some of the most "fair" I've ever played. Can't recall ever getting screwed over by faulty mechanics or anything; it's usually obvious whether someone will see you or not, so it should be up your alley.

It's kind of hilarious in MGS1 because you are probably 10 feet away from them and they STILL can't see you. I think they explain it in the game that they have "poor eyesight" or something due to a genetic factor (they are the Genome Soldiers after all).

They could have used the blizzard as an excuse for the opening section, but yeah, it's just chalked up to the fact that it's an old game really. There's also that plot twist much later on:

Where Liquid wants you (Snake) to activate Metal Gear for him, but that's just the events of the 2nd disc really.

The dogs in MGS3 are a little bullshitty though, sometimes you just can't see them coming at all, since they're asleep most the time and just strolling past them will wake them up and they'll bark alerting the guards and attack you. (I'm wondering if they'll be back for MGS5). Aside from that though, I agree the games are really as fair as stealth games get.

haha, the mgs1 Genome soldiers are actually pretty stupid, and the mgs2 soldiers are not much better either.Like my man kenny said, they can only see like 10 ft in front of them, you dont need to worry about that though because you can see their feild of vision as a cone on the soliton radar, so its actually pretty easy to avoid them, to the point where its quite possible to finish the game without being spotted once.
The thing is, once you realise how dumb the soldiers are, I bet my left nut that you will want to have some fun fucking around with them, hiding in boxes and tapping walls n shit, or just walking into a room and snapping everyones neck.

For a game from 98, it has aged pretty well, just be mindful though that its heavily cinematic. More then half the game is cutscenes (which seemed pretty cutting edge back then) and codec conversations. The game would be very short if you skip through them.

^^Yeah, I remember trying to beat the game in different ways in order to get different ranking names at the end, and I think if you wanted to get Big Boss, you had to beat it in about 2 or 3 hours I think. Which, if you know exactly what to do and skip all of the story, is entirely possible.
But like you said, some of the fun comes in messing with the guards, experimenting with the environments, and finding secrets. The length of the various games becomes greater depending on how much fun the player chooses to have. And it can't be called "padding," because it's all optional.
Ah, this is all making me nostalgic.
Just recently used the voucher from the Legacy Collection to download MGS1 (despite the fact that I own it physically), so that I could put it on my Vita. May have to mess with that when I take a trip next month.

Oh jeez, let's see what else I got from gog's sale...
Amnesia: The Dark Descent
Magrunner: Dark Pulse (free)
Unreal Gold
Sin Gold
Tiny & Big: Grandpa's Leftovers
Sanitarium
Back to the Future

Awesome thing is, everything combined was still less than a new game. Hell, everything combined was less than 20 bucks altogether. Sweet deals.

I totally thought I'd missed my chance at ever getting this. By the time I finally decided to go buy it online about a year ago, the price had shot up to around 90 bucks for a complete copy (and it's still like that now).
But today I was at a used book (and other stuff) store, and there it was, a complete, nice condition copy of the game for only 40 dollars. Been trying to save money in general lately, but I just couldn't pass up a deal like that. I'll probably never be stricken with that kind of luck again, so I had to get it.
