Videogames in Videogames

Anyone know of any instances where there are videogames hidden/featured in other videogames?

We all know the Arcade in Shenmue and Tekken 1 on the PSone has Galaga. Also if you played Uncharted 4:

Crash Bandicoot is playable

Anyone else know of any examples of videogames being meta?

The new Shadow of the Beast remake has the original as an unlockable extra.

Mortal Kombat Trilogy contained a version of Space Invaders as an Easter egg.

Sonic Generations had the first Sonic the Hedgehog as an unlockable I think.

Or are you just talking about games that your on-screen character can walk up to and play?

Either or, those examples are good too.

But preferably the easter egg games being vastly different from the main game. Not remakes containing the original.

At the moment, all I can really think of is Yakuza 5, with Virtua Fighter 2 available in Club Sega.

As remakes containing the originals go, Splatterhouse had all three of the original games unlockable, all of which were, themes aside, very different from the remake. Especially Splatterhouse 3.

You can play Windows 95 pack-in style games if you carry around the "GamePig" in System Shock 2. I didn't bother with it much since it, and the cartridges for it take inventory space, but I only remember finding two different games.

I always really enjoyed the little Namco shoot-em-up loading games for Tekken and Ridge Racer. I think I managed to beat Ridge Racer's one once without cheating. Not sure if I managed the same with Tekken.

You said to dismiss remakes within actual games, but the current generation Wolfenstein games usually have a way to play the original pixelated Wolfenstein. I think it's neat 'cos it's referencing actual game history, sort of like the current day Wolfenstein proudly (and rightfully at that) saying "Yeah, I'm still here, and I was also the first, I go back THIS far!". It's usually a pretty horrible and jerky affair, and ball-burstingly hard compared to the main game which is also quite a neat historic comparison in itself. I'd probably jizz myself if they included the full original Doom somehow, also. Would still be easy since the entire games were a few MBs in full and load in game in seconds.

Donkey Kong 64 had the original Donkey Kong you had to play as part of the campaign.

Also Black Ops 2 had games available if you walked around the start menu room

I remember Animal Crossing havin some games, as did San Andreas and GTA IV (though the latter two may be classed as mini-games because they weren't pre-existing ones) Sonic Adventure DX on the Gamecube (but not on the 360 >_< ) had several unlockable Game Gear Sonic games. There's also a video game easter egg in either a Battlefield or CoD, though I can't remember which one. Day of the Tentacle also has a fully playable version of it's prequel Maniac Mansion. Then there was a PS3 game (possibly more than just one) that allowed you to play a space shooter during loading times.

I'm guessing games that didn't previously exist outside of the new game don't count, eg:

- QUB3D in GTA San Andreas & IV (only ever playable as a GTA minigame)
- Geometry Wars in Project Gotham Racing (later became its own game)

Edit: Mittenz and I had the same thought. I'm off to scrub my brain with battery acid. :P

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots has you play the heliport part of the first MGS as part of a dream sequence before arriving at Shadow Moses.

Only one I can think of off the top of my head right now.

- I suppose Project Gotham Racing with Geometry Wars was one.
- Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings for Wii had the entirety of Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis as an unlockable (funnily enough, Lucas arts just took ScummVm emulator and shoved it in the game...)
- Wolfenstein the new order had it I think... with the original playable.

My brother and I used to play this all the time, but on the SNES version of Mortal Kombat 3

Resembles Galaga more than Space Invaders, I think, but it may be different on Mortal Kombat Trilogy.

Does that dream sequence in jail in MGS 3 count?

I wouldn't say so, personally. It's basically Big Boss having a nightmare about his fear of vampires, triggered by his conversation with Para-Medic beforehand, with hack 'n' slash gameplay. Pretty cool sequence, though :)

There's a game in Yume Nikki, called Nasu. It's monotonous and depressing and miserable. Yume Nikki is a game about clinical depression, so it fits perfectly.
