I knew this was being made, but never really looked too far into it, and as such I always thought it was going to be another retelling of the actual event involving the 47 ronin in history. And I was actually really interested in seeing that. A big-budget Hollywood take on a famous piece of Japanese history. That sounded cool.
Didn't realize it was going to involve magic and monsters and shit.

So now I'm really conflicted, because I'm disappointed as hell that it's not what I was expecting... but putting that out of my mind, I'll admit that it actually does look kind of cool (even if it does always bother the hell out of me when I hear samurai speaking perfect english).

In Reeves characters case he is half English.

Bit odd to release this on Christmas day.

To be fair, Reeves is half-Japanese, right? Or a quarter, or a third, or something...
It's not as bad as all that Last Airbender business years ago.

He's like half Hawaiian or some shit.

The trailer looks cool. I was somewhat interested in the film before when I heard about it and just as much so now. I haven't been going out to the theater due to time and expenses despite REALLY REALLY wanting to see Now You See Me and Pacific Rim (the latter for somewhat different reasons).

I dunno about Reeves though. He's perfect when it comes to roles like Neo in the Matrix, which basically involves him acting really emotionless among equally emotionless actors. Put him in anything that requires any sort of emotion and that spells disaster.

Yet I can see it working with him as a Ronin. I haven't seen many Samurai movies but from what I've seen occasionally there's a very serious stiff ronin guy that goes around killing people without showing emotion. So in the case of Reeves (based on that trailer) it seems like the perfect role for him.

His mother was English and his father was a Hawaiian-born American of Native Hawaiian, English, Irish, Portuguese, and Chinese descent.

He is also in an up coming film called Man of Tai Chi

This director hasn't done anything but is given a Christmas Day, full length, big budget epic. Usually spells disaster. I like Keanu in spite of the hate he receives on a regular basis but I can't come to grips with wanting to see this. i will probably end up seeing it but I hate CGI WITH A PASSION and I think for an Eastern style movie we need to at least see some great choreography and coverage of that choreography that is cogent and stylistic. If the action direction is shit I may end up walking out of it. In the meantime if you need to get a fix for Asian (particularly kung fu) cinema I recommend Lau Kar Leung classics like The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, My Young Auntie, and Tiger on the Beat just to name a few. Obviously those are Chinese and not Japanese but we are talking straight action here so I think you guys might like it. [-o<

that's kind of unfair. I don't see how the last samurai was whitewashing given it was based on an actual person.

Was a good film however the film shows a US officer when it was a really a French officer named Jules Brunet and he lived after the ordeal(and died of old age). The film also portrays the Samurai as the hero when really they were not. They were dicks but romanticized by the media and fiction like Knights and Pirates...except they were historical dickheads as well.
