Speaking of WW2. Quite a few people here preferred the locally stationed German soldiers over others. They had more discipline and had friendly chats. Some of them even came over to people at times to have a meal together. In contrast some of the other nationalities went around drunk more often and bothered people. As a result locals from small villages didn't mind Germany that much just because of what they saw in their tiny neighbourhood. So some forgot or didn't know about the larger scale. Though to be fair, several of those soldiers didn't agree with what was going on either but were forced to serve in the army anyway.

Honest question i can't find a decent answer to, I was once told by an old mercenary in my village that Scottish soldiers had a different uniform from British ones. I was wondering how long ago that was and if anyone even knew what they looked like.

No idea, sorry. Going back far enough when the two countries were enemies, the soldiers probably looked different.

I think only some military history forum/s would be of use, there're bound to be some real impressive geeks on there that would probably know straight away...

It could have been way way back, the old man fought in WWII.

my great grandfather was a gunner for the Scottish RAF in WW2 and he didn't wear a kilt, might just be a different colour to the English, I know he wore a beret though

Still have a WWII Helmet from my Uncle who flew and survived the whole war but died on a test flight in 1946.
