Disney just wasn’t big enough already, I guess. The company announced today that it has purchased Lucasfilm (you know, the Star Wars factory) for $4.05 billion.

They also announced a targeted 2015 release date of Star Wars: Episode 7. I have to assume that means the film will take place after Return of the Jedi, but that’s about all we know. Will it delve into the extended universe stuff seen in the books? Will Luke Skywalker be back? Who knows?

George Lucas, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Lucasfilm, said in a statement, “For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next. It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime. I’m confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come. Disney’s reach and experience give Lucasfilm the opportunity to blaze new trails in film, television, interactive media, theme parks, live entertainment, and consumer products.”

Combined with the fact that Disney also owns Marvel as well as Pixar, that’s a lot of beloved franchises under one roof.

Holy Shit. I'm glad Lucas is backing out of this but I thought this was a troll topic at first.

Walt Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger added in a shareholder conference call that the studio also plans to release Episodes 8 and 9, explaining: "Our long-term plan is to release a new Star Wars feature film every two to three years."

I hope they bring back Hamill, Ford and Fisher. I remember reading about an idea Lucas had for Luke to start rebuilding the Jedi Academy. I've always thought his just better as an idea man so someone else expanding on this could make it awesome like ESB and RotJ.

Well, this news is quite interesting. Came out of nowhere. Being a fan but not as much as I used to be I am skeptical but looking forward to the story being out into movie format as Riku is saying, its just that there is a good chance they will fuck it up.

Ford hated playing Han Solo so its doubtful he'll come back if they start rounding up the original cast (unless LOTS of money is involved.)

^To get Han Solo in a new film I bet we could see some of the biggest salaries ever thrown around. Although Harrison Ford is a stubborn guy and I can see him saying not caring about the money.

Most of the issues I've seen that he had with the films stems from George Lucas being in charge so maybe there is a chance.

I think I would cringe to see hamill ford and fisher back in character again. I don't think they'd be able to pull it off. It's like trying to see the Rolling Stones perform again. ehhhhh....

^The Rolling Stones still rock many disagree but I think their last album was their best ever.

Such a shame Joss Whedon is making Avengers 2 for the same year. Come on people who do you want to direct it?

Also Death Star stage in Kingdom Hearts 3!!!

I'm in disbelief. I guess that in the end, the almighty dollar would make George consent to just about anything. I'm not really sure where they can go from here. Focus on New Republic/Jedi order? The books have that so dragged out there probably isn't much suspense left as for what happens. Base it on the original sequel saga that featured Luke's sister and ret con the LORELOL that happened inbetween the making of 5 and 6 that made her Leia? Seems like a stretch. I guess they could always break new ground with characters that we don't care about.

I seem to remember George saying that Star Wars for him was 1-6 and nothing happened after as far as he was concerned, but if it had continued, it would not have been what the books and comics established. (Luke Marrying/Emperor making all kinds of clones etc) Then again, he also said that he wrote down in his will no more features. So I don't know what to believe any more.

I'm not quite sure why he needs any more money, he's friggin George Lucas. First Marvel and now LucasFilm? Are we gonna see 007 and his film company bought out by them too?

EDIT: You know, stories like these give me hope for Shenmue III. Just when you think you hear it all, shit like this pops up
