Has anyone been to Yokosuka?

Hey team, hope this is the right place for this thread.

I'm travelling to Japan this month. I'm wondering if anyone has been to Yokosuka, or seen any specific shenmue landmarks?

Is the town worth visiting for non-shenmue reasons? Is it a cool place to go? Safe?

I'd really like to check it out, and soak in the inspiration for the first game, but don't really want to go if it's a sketchy place, or not too exciting for non shenmue fans (like my girlfriend).

Thanks!

It's Japan, I don't know where you are from...but I have never seen anything "sketchy" about japan. It's one of the safest places in the world. As far as Yokosuka goes be prepared to run into a lot of sailors (lol) as America has a large military presence there. if you have the chance to go, then GO

I'm from Canada. I figured it was probably fine, but I just wanted to make sure.

I guess I'll make the trip! It's not that far out of the way - seems very close to Tokyo.

wow! Great pictures myshtuff!

You really captured the Shenmue flavour. I loved that one shot of the jackets for sale that totally looked like Ryos.

How long were you there for? Just the day?

Thank you very much! In Yokosuka and Yokohama for just one day, yes. I went to other Japanese cities as well.

I took a day trip there last year.

To be honest, it's safe, as most of Japan is, but it's got quite a noticeable American Military presence. There's nothing wrong with that, but as a result, it shows more signs of American influence than other parts of Japan does.

When I went there I went straight through to Dobuita. I even found the arcade! So yes, it's worth a day trip!

I regret it to this day that I never picked up one of those Yokosuka jackets.

On a side note I must say that it is pretty cool how many of us have already taken this "pilgrimage" to Yokosuka and/or Dobuita :)

And I bought myself a red polyester shirt (from a sailor's second hand clothes store) and I still wear it occasionally!

My wife's best friend is from Yokosuka, so we've been there pretty often. Besides Shenmue memories not that much of an exciting town. The good point is that it's not far from Tokyo, about an hour by subway.

It's funny, almost 4 years of living in Japan and having been to Tokyo like 6 times.. I've still never been. I guess I've been saving it for a good excuse or when I had the time.
But tbh once you're in Japan and get out of Tokyo to smaller area's in the rest of the country, you kinda feel you dont need to because you can capture the same look and feel from any old town with that era of construction, which is still very common.
However, I might be going there next year with Yama. We've always talked about doing it. I think its probably better to go with another Shenmue fan who would understand why you'd want to go to a random small town.

Its a pretty cool place regardless of being a Shenmue fan. Good burgers, fun clothes and it's quite beautiful for a built up area. There is also a nice walk-way near the station where you can see the boats!

It is close to Tokyo, but plan your trains accordingly. There is a rapid that goes there but it isn't too frequent.

Also, keep in mind it is a small area, you can cover it in an hour or two. So it's good to have other things in the area you want to see.

If you or anyone else needs help getting there, please let me know. Also, if anyone in Japan is planning a trip - I'm in!
