RIP Chris Cornell

Postby OL » Thu May 18, 2017 2:54 pm

Was mentioned in another topic, but this really deserves its own.
I don't think I've ever been this taken aback by a celebrity death before. Kenny mentioned it, I looked it up, and for several minutes I honestly couldn't form any coherent sentences. Just a lot of disbelieving utterances.
It's early, so I'm sure there's still more information that'll come out, but it's so far been ruled a suicide. And that just... I dunno, I find it hard to come to grips with. The guy has consistently been mentioned and lauded as one of the greatest singer/songwriters in the music industry for years now, and it's one of the few instances where I actually agree with the masses about that stuff, fully and wholeheartedly. I've recently been trying really hard to write my own music, and Cornell has always, always been at the fore of my mind when I'd think of inspiring lyricists. The guy was a legitimate poet and artist, and exemplified everything I'd personally like to be able to do in my own efforts. I also followed him on facebook, and he'd quite regularly post happy pictures with his kids backstage or while touring. Over his entire career, he consistently wrote dark lyrics, sure, but he never, ever struck me as the deeply depressed type (if that's even why he did it; you never know with artists).
Just watched a video of his very last performance, maybe hours before he died, and the part at around 6:35-7:55 is haunting as hell now. Those lyrics weren't in the original song. Then he followed it with the original lyrics "every word I said is what I mean."

He knew he was going to do it, and practically announced it.
I'm fucking wrecked right now.

It's definitely a shock. My musical tastes are far from what they were in the 90's. But my Dad loves Soundgarden and my brother and I loved Rage, so Audioslave was a big deal for us. Its honestly the most shocking of all the celebrity deaths for me too. Literally did not see this coming, especially if it was a suicide. We have tickets and were supposed to see Soundgarden next week on the 25th with Dillinger Escape Plan.

Yep, I mentioned it in the Death topic but I figured you'd make his own topic since you're a bigger fan than I am.

I love him in his time in Soundgarden (the first three albums anyway) and Temple of the Dog (which I regrettably missed when they toured here but that's cause Vedder didn't jump on board), but I'm not a fan of his solo work or his time in Audioslave. Other than his Casino Royale song.

That aside, the guy was a wonderful musician and seemed to be a decent guy with demons he just couldn't conquer. When it was announced that he hung himself, honestly it didn't surprise me one bit. The man talked about suicide and depression in his interviews and songs. Jesus Christ, one of his songs is Just Like Suicide and one of the lyrics to my favorite song ("Blow Up the Outside World") is "nothing can do me in, before I do myself".

It is surprising that it was so sudden with no immediate warning signs. But all that stuff aside, I feel there's a very bg void in the world of Alt Rock that probably won't be filled. Ever. Eddie Vedder is basically the last frontman from that era (that I could think of) that is left.

I just found out. Completely shocked. So sad to see another great artist lose their battle with the darkness. I hope his family's doing ok.

It does suck, yeah. RIP.

It looks like depression is becoming more understood now though, since I've seen a lot less of the "FFS, he had it all, what did he have to be depressed about?" sort of comments this time...

Soundgarden >>> Nirvana and Pearl Jam

Superunknown is one of the best albums ever recorded. The dude's voice was fucking insane. Like so many musical icons we've lost in the last few years, he was an absolute treasure and will be missed.

They played Black Hole Sun as part of the sound check for Surf Stage while I was working Hang Out Fest, and everyone clapped and cheered.
