Press release. Bam.

I agree the release of the HD games may be ground shattering to our small little community. But, to Sega and the gaming world at large it will just be another HD port.

Exactly.

In this case, trade shows would be more surprising than anything.
...Unless of course, these games are getting Shadow of the Colossus style remakes....something which has probably a 1% chance of happening at this point.

EDIT: They gave a similar answer for PC ports in 2016 (and we had Bayonetta and Vaniquish months later)

It's probably more likely to be Streets of Rage especially after Sonic Mania.

After the guide tour map I do believe that 2018 is the release year of Shenmue HD

I honestly don't care that much. I really don't mind how the graphics look now but I guess it would be good for people that don't want to get a Dreamcast/Xbox original.

I must say I agree with them all.. apart from skipping time. But then, I'm a guy who likes to walk and take his time.

I agree with all those sentiments, however if they just put in the time skip, improved the controls and save function I would take it. Anything to get those HD remakes out.

If we get a nice remake with a bit more work put into it I'm looking forward to seeing:

Rainy days when the ground is reflecting light sources such as the neon signs.
Snow settling on Ryo's jacket.
Real bloom from the sun and light sources that dazzle your eyes as the sun sets over the houses in Sakuragaoka.
Possible puddles when it rains (again, reflecting).
To see the sun glistening off the sea waves in the harbor.

Seeing as it’s 2018 now and unfortunately we didn’t get an HD release for 2017, I’m curious as to whether people think there will be an HD release this year.

On the one hand, I believe it will happen because Shenmue 3’s release date is quickly approaching, and Sega should capitalise on that situation; however, on the other hand, wouldn’t it have been released by now if they were going to release it? They announced a long time ago that they will be looking into Shenmue HD; could it be that they gave up? Maybe because it was too expensive or complicated with all the licensing and legal issues?

Unfortunately SEGA doesn't often do much with any business logic behind it these days. Logically there is an opportunity to make a bit of money off of the remakes, especially if they were released in the same version as the DC games. Any tweaks wouldn't cost too much to do either. I wonder how much they have wasted 'investigating'.

Sega Europe just posted a poll on their Twitter account.

It's a good opportunity to show them once again what they should already know ;)

Long thinking ahead :
Maybe I'm in the minority here, I don't know,
but, I think it would be easier for Sega to make a port instead of a full remaster.

Maybe something akin to Shenmue 2 on Xbox ? (On PC, maybe ?)

I mean, they have the source code for the game.
If they publish something, it could be only the original games embeded into some emulator like core.
(They could merge the disks to compress the data)

I think that the problem with HD remaster is exactly what has been brought up earlier :
If you make HD models it can clash with some lacking aspect of the game :
lack of reflection, cloths not being affected by the weather, etc...

That's why I think that ports may be best than HD remaster.
If remaster there is, it always bring the debate of "what to change ?"
and it can create an everlasting cycle of needed improvements.

All of this makes me understand a little the sentence from Yu Suzuki about Shenmue 1 and 2,
having still a slight possibility of being bundled with 3.
(He probably meant ports and not remasters,
a little like there was old games of him embedded in SH1 and SH2.)

If we get ports instead of remasters, it would make sense to provide them with Shenmue 3 :
It would be an additional incentive to buy the games, for new and old fans alike.

All of this is, as of now, wishes I got.
But, I really think that it's a lot easier for Sega to provide with a polished port,
than to create a full blown remaster (even though I would buy one if they did).

If basic ports of 1 & 2 came with Shenmue 3 it would be amazing value for money, but I fear that most people new to the franchise would just start at 3 (as to avoid the "ugly graphics").
I would have to play in order (which would be crippling given how many times I've completed 1 & 2 and how long I've waited for 3). It would be hard not to rush through them.

Nobody wants to buy a new game and play the old game bundled with it first. That’s the reason ports HD remakes are so important before Shenmue 3 is released. I honestly don’t expect HD remakes. Ports make more sense from a financial standpoint. I can understand a game like Shadow of the Colossus being completely remade but Shenmue is so much more complicated. A remake would be best but I can’t see SEGA ponying up the money for it.
