Favourite Yu Suzuki Game Outside of Shenmue?

(Chapter 1 | General Series Discussion)

He directed VF4 and Psy-Phi (if anyone was lucky enough to play that one before it got recalled and cancelled) after he was done with Shenmue . Around the same time as directing Shenmue 1, he also directed F355 Challenge [both this and Shenmue came out in the same year!], so he seemed to be capable of juggling multiple projects at once.

It certainly seemed like he was responsible for VF4, but in the 20th Anniversary Interview it seemed like he had done everything with the series with the series since 3.

VF4 is the entry most praised for its depth balance and the like, which is mostly attributed to Kataoka who installed internet infrastructure for Japanese arcades in the early 2000's, which further enhanced competetive aspects and the like. Suzuki's desire was to make it more simple rather than a "e-sport" like.

Psy-Phi never did do much for me sadly - Suzuki said it was ahead its time, but I disagree. Touchscreen in arcades weren't new in 2006, and it just seemed like Psychic Force from Taito.

OutRun for me.

It's easy to get into but difficult to master and is just really nice to replay over, probably due to the variations in route you can take. I got the 3DS version a while back and play it often. Also, the music is so good. I also love Space Harrier though and I'd like to play Hang-On, since I never tried that game for whatever reason!

After playing it so many times at the Yu Arcade in all those years my pick has to be Space Harrier.
It is the most fun and playable of the "true" YS arcade games and I'll never get tired of playing this again and again.
The music, the sounds, the graphics, the enemies it's all so great and memorable.

I played Hang On the second most of the games (for obvious reasons) and while I can play this one too every day in Dobuita it's rather bland and short in comparison, even for an arcade game. I guess he focused more on the machine itself, making it into a bike you can ride. Still one hell of a game to start a career with.

Outrun and After Burner are awesome and impressive but I never got into them as much, especially the latter wich is just a hectic mess at times. Outrun 2 on the other hand is really enjoyable, true to it's genre being a "driving game". Driving and drifting works so well and is such fun and it is one sexy looking racing game for the Xbox.

Of course I gotta mention Virtua Fighter 5 too. It's the most complete and polished game in the series and one of the best picks for fighting games ever.

Very, very, very hard question. Yu has made so many great games. I love so many of them. Even "smaller" games like F355 Challenge and Power Drift (Game Works) are brilliant. My favourite would probably be Virtua Fighter 3. I've played that one for countless hours.

But Outrun 1 and 2 and Virtua Fighter 2 and 4 are up there too. It's really hard to decide, but probably the ranking would be:

1. VF 3
2. Outrun
3. VF 4

Either Outrun or Virtua Fighter. I don't know what Yu's involvement with 18 wheeler was, but that is easily one of my favorite arcade experiences.

I loved Virtual Fighter 2, OutRun and OutRun 2006. Some of the best games. I played VF2 hours upon hours on my Saturn, great game. Thing is I am not even a huge fighter fan but between that and Soul Calibur on Dreamcast that has to be my favorite fighter before Tekken 3.

OutRun 2006 in 3D was amazing. I could play it on Xbox OG and PC all the time. The game just flows so well.

I think I was 15 or 16 back in 98-99, and my dad used to take me to a pool hall and let me drink with him and play billiards. When I was feeling the buzz I would ask for some quarters and go pop them into the OutRun arcade there and play Magical Sound Shower and race and LOVE it!

My favorite version has to be this though.

Edit: Just reinstalled OutRun 2006 Coast 2 Coast on PC. Damn, I missed this game SO much! I wish it was on Steam. The drifting in that game is the absolute best!
