...how many sequels could there have been on the console, or would nothing have changed and only two games would have been released there regardless?

From what I've learned about gaming franchises throughout history, most of them have had two or three sequels for many gaming consoles.

I'd like to have thought upto a fourth game.

I do remember Yu-san saying the team were taking a break after development of the second instalment due to working solidly on both titles since the Saturn and as such were exhausted.

Had the Dreamcast not met its untimely demise, we'd have atleast seen a third game for sure.

If the Dreamcast and Shenmue had been massive his, then I’d expect Shenmue 3 to be released maybe around 2005/6, towards the end of that generation of consoles. Then, Shenmue 4 would likely be released on Sega’s next console, whatever it would be in this alternate universe, possibly even with the same feature of being able to load old saves from the Dreamcast. I feel like Yu Suzuki would try to somehow implement that.
