Shenmue 1 and 2 Sales

(Chapters 3-6)

Unfortunately, Shenmue didn't sell more than Sonic Adventure, as you see here:

http://web.archive.org/web/200407141818 ... ank_d.html

BTW, Shenmue II is the 20th game in that ranking.

Anyway, SEGA says first game was sold more than 1,200,000 copies worldwide.

Do you see "120万" at the bottom left? That means 1,200,000 in Japanese.

acordding to this website:

http://www.creativeuncut.com/topsell00.html

It was the 28th best seller of 2000.

295,775 copies sold that year!

40 quid a game....

11 831 000 GBP (British pounds)

Based on current US dollars (someone find out 2000's average currency value?) Shenmue I in the 2000 made:

$ 20977546 USD, over $20 million to develop.

Low profits then. But profits notheless, plus that was developing the Saturn game as well.

EDIT: Oh, and that was in Japan alone. So they made....

¥ 2426053194 Japanese Yen.

Over

¥ 2313000000 in development costs.

They made

¥ 113 053 194 Yen in profit

Evidentaly, they made a decent profit if you take into account other countries.

You have to remember, that site is only japan too? so they will have made a hell of a lot more overseas 8)

What some of you guys don't reailze is Sega don't retain or get back the full value if a game is sold at $50. There are publisher fees, paying for retail space, advertisment costs and dozen of other factors to take into account.

Not to mention the expectations of Shenmue were fairly large to say the least. This wasn't just supposed to make a return on investment, this was meant to be a system seller through and through. Clearly that wasn't the case and the huge development costs, plus with Sega's failing financial situation didn't paint the best picture at all.

shenmue actually costs $65,000,000 and shenmue 1 on dreamcast sold 1.5 million copies worldwide(500,000 in japan)

shenmue 2 sold 600,000 copies worldwide on dreamcast(50,000 in japan and the rest in europe, shenmue 2 is also the most imported game of all time, even to this day)

because dreamcast was completely dead in japan, shenmue was never really popular in europe as it was in the us and many americans didn;t import it

I know someone who took Shenmue II back to the store when he found out it didn't have English language track so maybe that put people off buying it as well... Plus the Xbox was sort of a niche market when Shenmue II came out for it. Also it had little fanfare really.

Shenmue I was THE game that all DC owners wanted. It probably sold more copies than Sonic Adventure did... (wild guess).

no, sonic adventure sold well over 2 million copies worldwide
