shenmue II ending, helicopter scene

Postby Chai666 » Thu Jul 02, 2009 4:03 pm

one thing that bothered me at the end of shenmue II, if you can call it the end, was lan di on the helicopter and not coming down to fight ryo, was this maybe because it was a waste of time for him, had nothing to prove or he wanted to spare ryo's life or simply didnt know or heard ryo was pursuing him?

One of my favourite cut scenes. You could feel Ryo's cold stare.

I doubt Lan Di wanted to fight Ryo as he wouldn't fight him for no reason, what has Ryo done to him?

Lan Di has no beef with Ryo.

There is NO evidence that Lan Di is a truly evil man without a soul.

Iwao probably did kill his father. Revenge was quite possibly justified.

It's a brilliant scene. After all this time it still gives me goosebumps.

Like Clint said, Lan Di has no beef with Ryo.

On that note, it brings up an interesting point. Why would Lan Di consider attacking Ryo? Currently, he is not aware that Ryo has the Phoenix mirror and therefore isn't interested in him. It would be brilliant if, when Ryo confronts Lan Di, that Lan Di just refuses to fight him and Ryo cannot do anything because he is soft.

Lan Di has no beef with Ryo.

But Ryo and the others had just saved Zhu from being handed over to Lan Di. Lan Di left Kowloon empty-handed because of Ryo.
I've often wondered why he didn't drop into the battlefield himself. Maybe he was testing Ryo? Does he even remember Ryo? Maybe Zhu wasn't as important to the Chiyoumen as we thought. But if that was the case, then why would they seek help from the Yellowhead to find him, with Lan Di promising Dou Niu ownership of Kowloon, and staging such a large-scale operation to hand him over?

His reason for leaving Kowloon "Zhu-less", may never be answered... :(

Years ago I came across the same question, someone said Lan Di had felt that Ryo was not worthy for a fight (DN was just a pawn for LD so beating DN wasn't that great an achievement).

A more obvious theory from the point of gaming is that LD won't fight until the last chapter. He is supposed to be the final boss. As we all know, the last chapter of Shenmue doesn't exist.

I like that ending. It gives room for imagination and interpretations.

I don't think Lan Di has to be the final boss. It would certainly make sense, but it's not inevitable/

Ryo could possibly beat him around Chapter 13 and the remaining 3 chapters could be about something else entirely.

Yes, Clint is correct on that one. I highly doubt Shenmue is so shallow that it will amount to nothing more than a predictable battle between just Ryo and Lan Di. I think it was intended to be a little deeper than that, as in Ryo not just toppling an entire crime organization but saving the people of Bailu village, fulfilling his destiny, yadayada.

The reason Lan Di didn't come down is obvious. He would destroy Ryo without breaking a sweat. Ryo must advance his skills and training to stand a chance against Lan Di: which means he will meet new masters and train under different styles in future chapters.

Ryo's revenge is quite justified too. Therefore, the revenge Lan Di's son will take in 20 years will be justified, and then the revenge Ryo's son will take on him will be justified, and the revenge Lan Di's son's son will take will be justified on Ryo's son's son. And it will keep on going like that until China declares war on Japan, all because of Iwao hazuki.
