I think it is possible if 2 people play at same time with same controller...
One is focused on hitting A and another will take charge of the QTE.
I did beat him a couple of times but never at the max bet....
My finger speed was not enough and the QTE made me lose focus.

Theres a trick my friend showed me where you rub the back of a clickable pen across the button. Perhaps its possible with that method? It really does beat trying to press it as fast as you can with your thumb.

I always steered clear of those damn arm wrestlers though.
