Problem enjoying Shenmue

I guess there where allot of "WHAAAAT???!!" when you read the topic name!

Shenmue itself is beautiful, but all the glitches and freezing often kills my mood!
When im playing through Shenmue (wich is my favourite serie) I have this constant fear of freezing!
For me to walk in the Golden QR is a hell in it self, God knows how many times iwe had to reset
the game, just to have the same problem again!
And the day that you meet Lan Di on top of the building-
"dont freeze, dont freeze" is something I think, when im going up all the stairs!
I wish a could fully enjoying Shenmue without thinking about saving and having
constant thoughts in my head where the game froze last time i played it through!


How about you guys? do you ever get this feeling, and do you feel that this destroys a little bit
of the euforic that you get from playing the game?

I think your console might be the problem dude. I pretty much never have glitching or freezing problems in any of the games. Unless you're playing S2 on the 360. The 360 software emulation of that game is really problimatic.

I have proberly had 4 dreamcasts since 99:)
Bought and sold!

I belive that both Shenmue and the Dreamcast has its good days and bad days:)

Hmmmm unless its just bad luck. I have never had a problem with Shenmue or Shenmue II on the Dreamcast. The only 2 issues i have ever recalled in my Shenmue gaming are:


1. A few seconds freeze when i take a snapshot in Shenmue II (due to having too many pictures taken)

and

2. The audio issues of Shenmue IIx since not having my settings set to 60htz

The golden qr would probably be one of the more likely spots to have issues since so much is going on there. Especially on the 360 I always have sound sync, frame rate drop and freezing. If thats the case on 360 then I could see it being more likely on other systems, but honestly ive never had an issue there on DC or Xbox 1.

Seems like an overly basic question and dont want to offend but, hows your discs? Scratched at all? DC discs are pretty sensitive with even the lightest of scratches.

In the golden qr i get error mesages sometimes, not freezing, pure error screen!

The Dreamcast discs are relativly sensetive, my discs are in good condition i belive!
I think maybe my Dreamcast have to take some of the blaim to!

Considering all the reset problem i have on DC, I guess that makes my games more likely to freeze allso!

a few years ago, i had a quick play on my dreamcast before i sold it & i noticed a slight problem with shenmue 2.. when i started disk 4 to just play the QTE mini game, Ryo was x3 bigger than the QTE acade machine

it might have been a warped disk but it got me thinking about an article i read online about CD disks degrading over time

Exactly. Same here.

And slowdown only appear in places with 10 characters (or even more) in the screen.

Yep, it sounds like a bad disc.

Whichever disc you're using in the Golden Qtr, I'd replace it with another. Just buy a cheap copy of the game on eBay and make sure the disc you're replacing it with is scratch-free.

Bit of an old bump but I will say I have had Shenmue 2 on the Xbox freeze. It froze once in the Golden QR at the mall after meeting the one masters former student and I hadn't saved it for awhile and over time the game would freeze more I think due to the disc getting more dirty even though I took good care of it. I got a new clean unused copy of it last summer thankfully and have played through it once all the way through and had no problems.

yeah I think I've gone through about 5 dreamcasts or something..
i come across problems like freezing and stuff, I think the dreamcast is just kinda untrustworthy because I don't have these problems with other consoles.
I have to play SII on the 360, but that has problems too (however it is just the version of the game that's the problem). Problems like the audio going away etc..
