I pressed it. Multiple times. It took me a few tries to get what I was doing wrong.

Well I guess everyone pressed it the first time. Even the English dub wouldn't help that much. By this time players of Shenmue and Shenmue II are trained to react to the on screen buttons. And they have it flash on there for sooo long.
The were really clever with this QTE, really screws your gaming instincts over.

The length of it flashing is what really did it for me! It's like it's getting louder each time: "Push A. Push A! HURRY, HURRY, PUSH A NOW!"

I can honestly say that I didn't fall for it. Somewhat surprising, yes, but true. It's been so long since I played the game that I can't remember exactly what was being said in that scene, but I do remember understanding right away that it was some kind of test and that I must resist the impulse to press.

There was other stuff in the game that almost made me give up completely (very silly to think back on it now) but this one was never a problem. I remember my friend getting very frustrated though. Wanted him to sweat for a while so I kept my mouth shut.

I want to say one of the holes in my bedroom wall is from a dreamcast controller being thrown at it. This scene may or may not be the reason for it.

i don't care what anybody says, it's a play on blind trust.
yu knows human nature well to add that in.
got me real good, to the point i've broken a door, a tv, a few pads and one dreamcast.
absolute wasted em, with zero regrets.
it's a learning curve, or a rewiring one.
complete bullshit, and hampered the experience for me by that one scene...and would like to undo it if i could, remove it from the game entirely.
got past it in the end obviously, but i'm still pissed about it, more the psychology of it, seems like a good play on a certain type of irl faith, and yu capitalized on the human flaw.
he gets credit for observation of human reactions there, but it doesn't mean i like him for it...

Ten year-old me couldn't get my head around letting the QTE run its course despite being told two seconds prior not to touch anything. It just didn't make any sense to me! I must have failed this sequence at least ten times before referring to a strategy guide, and even then I don't think I believed what I was being told

The exact same thing which happened to OP also happened to me. The first time I thougt "Yeah, that was a bit slow. Probably too late for the QTE." The third time I was like "Wait a minute, nobody could have been quicker than that!" and then it hit me!

I was paying attention to the speech in the moment. And pressed it anyway hahahaha

It was a good way to make the days pass quickly.

You know, I've heard people say that, but when I tried it, Ryo got kicked out, I had to select the "wait" option, but then he got teleported to the hotel when the clock hit his bed time. Then I had to exit the hotel, and THEN I was able to try again.
Is that the only way you can do this?
Because if so, it was much better in Shenmue 1 with the flashlight cutscene, because you just let the scene play without having to do anything..

I pressed the button twice. Only passed it at the third try.
The button flashing on the screen just ignites a pavlovian response, despite being told not to do anything, i just couldn't resist pressing it.

So guilty of this! God knows how I got past it all those years ago. It had completely slipped my mind, so much so that I had to Google the solution on my 2015 replay!
