Was thinking about Shenmue 2 and suddenly got curious about something... What happens if you just stand there in Languishan (The first place in Guilin before you meet Shenhua) until Night comes? Where would Ryo Sleep? How does that place look at night?
I don't have my Xbox around right now so I can't test it.

I'll get around to it, if no one else has.

That's a really good question. I wonder if he would sleep somewhere on the boat?
Looking forward to the answer

I think it cuts straight to the cutscene with Shenhua running along the river after a small period of time.

Peter is right. Ryo says he must leave the village and then a basic aerial cutscene is showing Ryo walking on the exit path.

I assume something similar will also happen if you don't move after you disembark in Hong Kong.

Ryo sleeps at the shelter where the homeless old man lives. That's the place the woman recommended to you before her daughter said you byebye.

Yeah but you have to walk past the old couple who play the "good luck" songs in order to trigger the cutscene with the lady and her daughter.
I'm saying what if you don't move at all?
I assume the game will force you to move on way or another.

That's an interesting question.
I guess it just triggers automatically, but it would be cool to check.

All these cutscenes are not necessary to progress in the story so I think you are straight sent in the shelter. I'm testing it.
edit: the game forces the cutscene with the lady after two ingame hours. The place has its own nightfall cutscene.
The dialogue with the 'good luck' musicians is also different as you skipped the original cutscene.
When you forced to go to the Free Stay Lodge, you can move freely inside (the time passes very slowly) and talk to the homeless person to unlock a rare little dialogue, then you have no other choice to sleep or save.
