Ready for another disappointment?

Postby harlekin » Wed Dec 22, 2004 6:53 am

Yesterdays News on: http://www.got-next.com/features_read.php?id=77

got-next.com interviewed Toshiro Nagoshi who has worked on titles such as Virtua Racing, Daytona USA, Scud Race, Virtua Fighter 2 (BG-Art), the Monkey Ball series and F-Zero (ARC, GCN), the following lines are from this interview.
What about future games?

Nagoshi: I can?t go into too many details right now. At the moment I?m trying to challenge myself to create a dramatic action-adventure. I have a lot of ideas right now...

sounds like something new, but could still be a translation mistake.. ;)
Ever thought of making an RPG style title?

Nagoshi: Yes, yes. We?ll probably announce something in the near future. Of course we can?t delve into the small details, but our team is working on some stuff, including an action-adventure and an RPG style game. Next year should be very interesting for us. This year was sort of like a preparation, really. Please look forward to it!

3, 2, 1, start rumoring!

Hmm... how reliable is this place?

And also, what if it's just another weird RPG like Virtua Fighter Quest (note - has not actually played Virtua Fighter Quest)?

Even with Shenmue Online being released, Sega may choose to skip Shenmue again to try to make another license which could cost less and sell more.

But in any case, it is indeed time to start rumouring...

We are so far past the point of speculation it's ridiculous. There are two kinds of people: those that read something like that and jump all over it starting rumors and such; and there are those that are so cynical, nothing short of Yu Suzuki hand-delivering them Shenmue 3 will convince them otherwise. I mean, have we become so desperate as to get excited when the mere genre of Shenmue gets announced? And from someone who didn't even work on it no less! Doubtful at best.

I'd say we're pretty reliable considering the authors and I have been "in the scene" for years. The authors are the same folks who conducted the Osaki interview for Gamespy earlier this year, as well as the Miyamoto and Naka interviews featured on TNL (a fansite which we previously worked at), and several other well-known publications.

And to address the speculation regarding Shenmue -- allow me to put those notions to rest...it has nothing to do with the franchise.

Why would it be Shenmue?

He has not worked on Shenmue before. Just because he had worked on other Sega-related titles does not mean he is working on Shenmue. I wouldn't expect this game to be related to Shenmue in any way to be frank.

I doubt its Shenmue too though it sounds really similar to it.

I bet he's talking about another project that is set in the same vein as Shenmue was before it.

"Action-Adventure RPG" is a growing genre of games, titles such as KOTOR are proof of that. Shenmue isn't the only game to be defined by these standards anymore, nor does it really even belong to the genre (FREE people, FREE). This in no way relates to Shenmue, nor does it hint at anything even remotely related to Shenmue. Considering this Shenmue material is in the utmost desperation for a sequel, which is understandable and quite frankly, I can relate to that desperation. But c'mon people, don't be chumps and buy into this. It's nothing, it's fluff.

So true, so true. I'd be the latter of those two distinctions. When you have "reports" as these happening every few months, sometimes in even closer proximity, and nothing ever coming to fruition, how could you not be cynical? Rather than being crushed repeatedly for hanging on to every little false hope that comes down the pipe, I'd rather sit back and wait to hear it from the man himself. It just seems a hell of a lot smarter.

Exactly. Not only that, but he seems to be saying that he's working on new projects. He doesn't mention an addition to a series, such as Shenmue III.

I meant that since he works in SEGA and everything, Shenmue might've given him a few ideas to start this new project. Surely other titles might've been a driving force, but it's more possible Shenmue might've given him an idea starting a title that had a few FREE elements in it.

oie...

Sounds like two separate games, an action/adventure game (which could be nearly anything) and an RPG game (which could also be just about anything).
