Sega Loses Shenmue Trademark.......

It wasn't a registered trademark when it was released, and re-registering it now would make no sense as they don't use it as a brand. I think people are getting confused between trademarking and the actual rights to the IP.

If the TM was for Shenmue Online - it means nothing as the game was canceled a while back.

If the TM was for Shenmue Ports on XBL and PSN - it means that Sega are unable to demonstrate that they will be using the trademark in the immediate future - and so it might be an indication that they're not planning to release HD ports anytime soon.

Generally speaking I don't think it really means anything. I see the prospect of Shenmue 3 being just as likely as I did before the TM lapsed.

Slightly different. The rumour Sega were investigating was a new trademark for "Shenmue 3".

I don't think there are any problems with renewing the trademark. I really don't see why there would be any.
As long as nobody else takes it they can easily register "Shenmue" again.
