In all of this can't we atleast give a thumbs up to Sega?

SEGA is not a charity and will most likely not give the rights to Yu Suzuki for free.

In a recent interview, Yu Suzuki was asked directly if SEGA will get any money for the licence. Yu said that he can't comment on that.
It's pretty obvious that SEGA does get a cut, otherwise there would not be a reason to be silent about it.

Does SEGA get money from the Kickstarter? - Probably.

Yu always mentiones that Sony and Shibuya Productions won't get a cent from the KS - but he never mentions Sega. Futhermore he always says that "more" money from the KS can be used for developement, not "all" the money.

Obviously he can't talk about SEGA's involvement, but you can easily sum one and one together.

They won't get a thumbs up until the background about the license is made clear and they acknowledge Shenmue III on Twitter, Facebook or their page.

Until we get Shenmue HD, I will not be praising this company.

One thing Suzuki did say in one of the interviews is that Sega is 'very glad' the game is being made, so maybe they did give him a deal with the licence. all those years of pestering sega were not fruitless.

I'm sure they are very glad to make money off a game they dont even have to touch.
Yup, Sega is super awesome.

Like Henry, unless they do Shenmue HD they have no respect from me.
Even then, if they do release it that would be like praising a man for picking up thousands of dollars off the ground. Yu Suzuki is just droping it for them at this point.

I've followed his career very closely, and have spent an inordinate amount of time playing his games before Shenmue was ever released; probably over 3 thousand hours of my life just on Virtua Fighter 1-3. But I don't remember if he was on good terms with SEGA when he departed, or if anything was made public about it.

Sega shouldn't do an HD port. Most HD ports are substandard in quality and rushed out for a quick buck. They ought to spend a little more and give the games full remakes in Yakuza 5 engine visuals. They have all the assets, story, music and dialogue ready it would juste require a small dedicated team to work on. Clearly there's huge potential out there based on the KS alone.

I thank them because they used to do games that were awesome, and I understand that Shenmue was a risky bet.

Hopefully I'll have more to thank them in the future.

Do you really want current era SEGA to do a Shenmue remake? Sonic 06 wasn't that long ago.

I would buy a well made HD port of Shenmue I and II with dual audio on day one.

I've drifted away from gaming, but I'm sure Sega put out a few gems in the vein of Sonic 06 in the nine years since.

Sega have not been Sega since 2003. They still deserve some respect for letting Yu have the Shenmue license, even if we don't know the ins and outs of the deal they struck. Shenmue 3 is happening because of Sega. They were a "roadblock" for many years but they are fixing that mistake right now.

Sonic 06 was buggy as hell.
I can only think of two games that were superb and developed internally by a Sega studio since the end of the Dreamcast era; Panzer Dragoon Orta and Valkyria Chronicles.
