Shenmue CE development

Dear Community,

Shenmue Community Edition is a project that will be launched during June, I can't give any specific information on whether we're writing our own engine or tailoring an open source one, but I can say that we're estimating the project to take us around 2 or 3 years, depending on the decision on the engine.

We have a very talented model designer, Dino as most of you will know him, he and I are both very excited about this project and will be releasing as much information as we can during development.

We intend for this project to be open source, and community driven, so we need programmers, model designers, script writers, etc. Of course, the script is not needed until the software development side of it is complete, but it may take a while to put together so starting early is never a bad thing; same goes for all other aspects of the project.

I myself will be putting together the programming team, I have light experiance using C++/OpenGL, my major experiance is in application development and web systems, however that knowledge can be applied to everything. I'm hoping people who browse this forum, know someone, or are themselves experianced in something that will be able to help us.

So if you're a "programmer" so to speak, and are interested, please send me a Private Message with your e-mail or reply to this thread.

Thank you.

So lemme guess.. this is Shenmue Online set in Yokosuka, minus magic? Sounds good. As long as you can do all the shit you can do in Shenmue (ie play pool, darts, fight, and buy shit). Otherwise, it'll probably be pretty whack.

Hello, I'm going to address the posts before this one if that's okay.

@Mortis: Implemented minigames is planned and is not a major issue in terms of development, in regards to 'minus online', we've discussed some online features we'd like to implement but this is all just 'chat', an idea we had is the feature of being able to trade the toys you can get from capsules with your friends using a friends list.

@Joshua: Yes, there's always a possibility it could be out, however this is a development project, we start first by developing the engines, the 'canvas' would be a way at looking at it, this would be the hardest part for us as a team, then 'drawing' onto it will be a fast and easy process. So if Shenmue III is released by that point, ours could easily be a side-story, or an engine for a whole different game.

@TheGreatMadMan: :)

I am completely devoid of any and all technical skills with computers, but I might be able to help out with the scripts. Hopefully I can help out with that when the time comes.

We're at 3 Programmers so far, and we've had some interest from a musician which we'll be deciding on soon, thanks for the response.

I can do music. I'm working on it from SC2. Also, if you need a story that runs alongside or relates to the games, I can cook something up no problem.

I am not quite clear on what kind of game this is supposed to be. Can you provide some details and examples?

As for programming, I might be interested in this project after I graduate this spring (May 10th to be exact). I will be graduating with a degree in Computer Science.

try not to give too much time apart from the project or the team will lose interest so we at least we see a nearly finished project to pass on to other people to tweak.

this site should help with development http://www.devmaster.net/engines/

I may be able to do some music/sound design. Depends on how many people are working on audio, what you need, and how much free time I have with school/work/bleh haha.
