I have never messed with Unity, but I assume you can change the different character traits off the stock character right? Like walking gait, movement, and also not jumping 10 feet in the air.

Wait, so there's not going to be any fighting mechanics like Shenmue 1 & 2 and only QTES?

Wrong. It seems Hirai wants to incorporate QTE into the free fights. Which sounds like a cool idea to me. Let's see what they can come up with.

Wow, I hated that QTE! :) Had to use index finger and middle finger to do it. So annoying. Well, I don't know what exactly Hirai is planning but I guess he will have a new approach. Wait and see.

Sounds like they're taking ques from modern games. I can't think of a specific name but I know I've seen it before. You'll be free battling and an enemy will take a 'i'm exhausted pose". Usually that's a que for the player to initiate a QTE to finish him.

Like I already said, so long as the combat retains some complexity I'll be okay.
If they go sleeping dogs/batman route I'll be a tad upset. That combat is all automatic. I don't want automatic.

Or I guess at the very least have the virtua fighter style stuff for major bosses and the watered down stuff for groups of enemies.
