Shenmue Dojo

So apparently Ryo is going to get a change of clothes in Shenmue III. The new green tunic kind of resembles Lan Di which is VERY interesting. Ryo is going down the path of becoming Lan Di so the clothes could mean something.

Maybe the in-game rationale is that Ryo decides to "go native" while in rural China and leaves his city slicker jeans and jacket behind since they would be too out of place.

At the same time, it's hard to imagine playing as Ryo without the classic bluejeans and white shirt.... I'm definitely conflicted about the change in clothing.

Any thoughts?

Interesting take - I never considered it to be a portent of Ryo "becoming" Lan Di. "Going native" seems likely. The Guilin section of Shenmue II saw Ryo gradually open up to Shenhua and show interest in Bailu village and its traditions, so I reckon there'll be a lot of cultural immersion going on in III.

On a side note, I wonder what that "Skin change feature" for Ryo's jacket will be (from Kickstarter).

Yeah Ryo really is Lan Di. And at the end of his journey he realized that the dragon he was searching for was within.. not without.

Hmmmm, I know it makes sense to change clothes but I'd feel a sense of disconnection if he wasn't wearing his default gear.

Ryo is going to transition into one bad ass kung fu dude, so new clothes seem appropriate. also the more time spent in china living in the those villages and getting to know the locales, the jeans ect are going to feel increasingly out of place.

if we return to exploring bigger cities in shenmue 4 maybe the jeans jacket etc will make a fond and welcome return.

You know, I kind of agree. Had Shenmue 3, 4, etc, been released every couple of years, it might've been a different story, but...the wait/ anticipation for Shenmue 3's been so epic, that at this point, I NEED the jeans+leather jacket combination (at least on my frst playthrough).

The new outfit's a nice option, though. It doesn't say "backer only" either...perhaps a DLC release down the line?

Anyway:
40,000+ backers won’t have the telephone card
50,000+ backers won’t have the outfit

(not to mention the __ non-backers who buy the game upon its release)

Essentially, if Sony/ YS don’t include these items as DLC options down the line…diplomatically speaking, it’ll be a highly “questionable” decision on their part, shall we say ;)

I think as long as he starts on his jeans and jacket and a story element puts him in a Chinese outfit it'll be great. maybe it'll be part of the rapport system and Shenhua will like him more if he decides to change his outfit
