Deep Silver today announce that their upcoming release Shenmue III has been moved and will now release in 2019.

The extra time will be used to polish the quality of the game even further, to the high standards it deserves and release the product in the best possible timeframe.

No futher information at this time. Personally I'm glad, the more time it spends in the oven the better the finished product.

Edit - Kickstarter email just went out.

Hello Everyone,

Along with our publishers, Deep Silver, we have an announcement for the release date of Shenmue III. Our report follows with a comment from Mr. Suzuki.

Announcement by Deep Silver:

“ Deep Silver today announce that their upcoming release Shenmue III has been moved and will now release in 2019.

The extra time will be used to polish the quality of the game even further, to the high standards it deserves and release the product in the best possible timeframe. ”

Original Announcement: Deep Silver

Comment by Yu Suzuki:

To all of our backers, we are very sorry for the delay. After much discussion with our partners, Deep Silver, we have concluded that extending the release will allow us to deliver Shenmue III at its best. We promise to use this time to improve the quality of Shenmue III.

We cannot thank you enough for your enduring support.

As expected. Perfectly fine, however here come the drama vultures on YouTube and various media outlets...

Scratching my head over a lack of "first half" "second half" or a specific quarter, but on the bright side it's nice to know Deep Silver wish to keep funding the game even beyond their initial agreed period.

Totally fine with this. I predicted it anyway after the Deep Silver announcement. Another year to get the game polished is worth it. Shenmue 1 and 2 HD will keep me occupied this year.

Personally this sits well with me.

It could feed in to a wider strategy to ensure maximum exposure.

E3 the announce the HD collection release date (maybe a small Shenmue 3 teaser too)

Gamescom a fully voiced trailer.

Shenmue HD releases

Dec 2018 Shenmue 3 release date announced for Q1/2 2019.

I'd rather a polished finished game than something rushed. yes some of the gaming media will jump on this but I'm sure this was all done with the bigger picture in mind. Kingdom Come had lots of delays and turned out OK. It has to be right otherwise it puts the series at risk. Plus we know certain media outlets will slate anything Shenmue so it has to blow people away.

No one was expecting a 2018 release at this point. I can wait, just take your time to make it the best you can.

Do you guys think that this is one of the reasons that Sega haven't revealed the Shenmue HD release date?

Not shocked by this at all but at the same time a little bummed. Can't help it I guess, but once the HD release date is announced that should ease the pain a bit haha.

With the Shenmue HD Collection coming this year, it will keep me company while I wait for the third.

That said, there can be absolutely ZERO half-assing with this game. To me, a second delay with a publisher and dev help means this must deliver the "full on Shenmue experience" that Yu Suzuki promised in 2015. No excuses now.

I figured that this was still a likely outcome, given the limited amount of footage revealed so far. I don't mind though, I'm happy that Shenmue 3 is getting made. What's a couple more months in 2019 compared to how long we've already waited?

More time also means more cost if I remember correctly. If they run out of money before 2019, then there is going to be issues with releasing the game.

I've been expecting this for a long time now and it is the best thing that can happen to Shenmue III.
All the extra time and effort is going to be so worth it. If you haven't done so yet (been advising this for long too) mark a very late release in the year to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the original.

It's a bit of a disappointment that they don't include any kind of material to hold people over and apologize in a way.
I personally don't need it but going in with nothing is just a way to feed the trolls. Well, then again... if there was some screenshot they would rip it apart anyway.

Predicting a late April 2019 release. It won't be out any sooner.

I'm not surprised, but I am a little disappointed as I had a slim hope that they might pull off the late '18 release. I'm sure it's for the best, all in all.

At this point, though, I think it's important for everyone to check their expectations again. I'm seeing a lot of assumptions that this means "early" 2019, but they very clearly avoided specifying any timeframe within 2019. It could still be towards the end of that year until we hear otherwise.
