Let's Get Sweaty wrote: Meggan Scavio is the General Manager of the Game Developers Conference. It is her job, along with everyone else managing the event, to organize a line-up that will make money at the gate. Part of GDC's profit comes from giving developers an opportunity to network with fellow professionals, and the rest comes from the appeal of the specific talks and seminars taking place.
At last year's event, Meggan photographed two old friends catching up with each other, and tweeted the picture with the claim that Yu Suzuki and Mark Cerny were talking strategy for Shenmue III. "For reals, you guys." The public backlash she received for what others in the business of convention promotion have called a publicity stunt will have made her all too aware of the demand and passion that exists for Shenmue.
Earlier this winter Yu Suzuki was announced as a guest speaker at this year's conference. Meggan tweeted that she was glad Mark Cerny accepted her request to come along and interpret for him. Three years ago at GDC, Mark hosted a career retrospective for Yu, in which they had to limit conversation about Shenmue despite strong interest because there was much else to cover. This time, the occasion is dedicated to Shenmue, talking developers through the challenges Yu and his team faced when making the game, how they overcame them and the lessons they learned. The intention, as with everything else the promoters book for GDC, is to sell tickets. Yu Suzuki and Mark Cerny will be paid for their time by Meggan's employers.
Fans are lucky enough to have the opportunity to watch this postmortem streamed live on GameSpot.com, and gain an insight along with the paying professionals in attendance into what went on during Shenmue's groundbreaking development. This is a real treat that we all should be anticipating eagerly for what has been advertised. Instead, some are treating it as something else entirely, and deciding they will give up hope for the franchise if this booking, initiated by GDC management to make money off the hype it would generate, does not massively over-deliver beyond what is promised. By providing something really cool for the Shenmue fanbase, all involved are somehow going to be held responsible for a number of fans abandoning their pursuit of a sequel on a day that they otherwise would not. Suddenly Shenmue's return to the marketplace has to be announced now or never, just because some enterprising promoter has decided to hire Yu and Mark for an independent appearance together, hoping to cash in on precisely these emotions.
This, to me, is lunacy of a kind that only gamers could talk themselves into.
