Nothing will happen at GDC anyway, because it is not the place for a big announcement as this.
In any case, would be a pity to give up just now, now that we are getting even stronger every month.
Give up or not, I would suggest that we wait for Sony's mouth to speak, probably at E3.
In the end, we can say that we try, as always.

Meggan Scavio is the General Manager of the Game Developers Conference. It is her job, along with everyone else managing the event, to organize a line-up that will make money at the gate. Part of GDC's profit comes from giving developers an opportunity to network with fellow professionals, and the rest comes from the appeal of the specific talks and seminars taking place.

At last year's event, Meggan photographed two old friends catching up with each other, and tweeted the picture with the claim that Yu Suzuki and Mark Cerny were talking strategy for Shenmue III. "For reals, you guys." The public backlash she received for what others in the business of convention promotion have called a publicity stunt will have made her all too aware of the demand and passion that exists for Shenmue.

Earlier this winter Yu Suzuki was announced as a guest speaker at this year's conference. Meggan tweeted that she was glad Mark Cerny accepted her request to come along and interpret for him. Three years ago at GDC, Mark hosted a career retrospective for Yu, in which they had to limit conversation about Shenmue despite strong interest because there was much else to cover. This time, the occasion is dedicated to Shenmue, talking developers through the challenges Yu and his team faced when making the game, how they overcame them and the lessons they learned. The intention, as with everything else the promoters book for GDC, is to sell tickets. Yu Suzuki and Mark Cerny will be paid for their time by Meggan's employers.

Fans are lucky enough to have the opportunity to watch this postmortem streamed live on GameSpot.com, and gain an insight along with the paying professionals in attendance into what went on during Shenmue's groundbreaking development. This is a real treat that we all should be anticipating eagerly for what has been advertised. Instead, some are treating it as something else entirely, and deciding they will give up hope for the franchise if this booking, initiated by GDC management to make money off the hype it would generate, does not massively over-deliver beyond what is promised. By providing something really cool for the Shenmue fanbase, all involved are somehow going to be held responsible for a number of fans abandoning their pursuit of a sequel on a day that they otherwise would not. Suddenly Shenmue's return to the marketplace has to be announced now or never, just because some enterprising promoter has decided to hire Yu and Mark for an independent appearance together, hoping to cash in on precisely these emotions.

This, to me, is lunacy of a kind that only gamers could talk themselves into.

I agree with everything you just said Sweat, but that was far, far too eloquent a reply for this sentence

Haven't heard any official news that Yu Suzuki and Mark Cerny are working together for a Shenmue 3 in PS4. Yes, GDC is not the place for announcements; you can hear announcements in exhibits like: E3, TGC et cetera. Repeat to read LGS' post: viewtopic.php?f=5&p=1065540#p1065519

What you said makes complete logical sense but at the same time I respectfully disagree with you. As fans, we should not feel entitled to expect some sort of Shenmue announcement.....BUT(and I can't stress this louder than I can boldface it) I think the fan expectations of some sort of progress for Shenmue are very valid.

Last time Yu Suzuki and Mark Cerny were on stage, Yu Suzuki himself said and I quote "I think Sega will let me make the game." Between the release of Shenmue II and now, this single quote has given me more reason for optimism that the game is coming. Not to mention that Suzuki has been very vocal about the events that happens in the third game. After all this time, we even know who the final boss of the game is. In my personal opinion, I believe Shenmue III is in development right now as we speak.

Yu Suzuki and Sega have both stated the possibility of Shenmue III would rest on if anyone was willing to fund the game. This was a few years ago, now Sony has stepped in and vocally acknowledged the Shenmue fanbase and our desire to see the third game released on their console.

Anyone familiar with Sony's methods of advertisement can tell you, Sony doesn't like to advertise their biggest games at grandest stage all the time(E3). Sony's usual agenda at E3 is push the hell out of their first party titles and online services. Sony usually announces their megaton bombs at smaller events or PlayStation specific conferences. GDC would be a perfect time for to announce Shenmue III because it gives them perfect momentum going into E3 where they can focus on other games. In another words, Sony is going to want the spotlight to themselves where they can focus the IP itself and the reaction and not have to deal with any retaliation from MS or Nintendo.

Like I said earlier, one would be smart to not get their hopes up for GDC. But when you keep putting 2 and 2 together, it's hard to do so. I will be very disappointed if we don't hear anything on the FUTURE of Shenmue at GDC.
