Dragon Quest Series

Postby Segata Sanshiro Jr. » Mon Jan 10, 2011 12:47 am

I figure we have an ff series thread why not Dragon quest.

anyway heres some shit about dragon quest 10, apparently it'll be getting a real unveiling later this month

http://vjump.shueisha.co.jp/nextinfo/

a few reasons DQ10 is likely to cross the pond:

DQ9 sold well in the west under Nintendo's marketing:

http://www.siliconera.com/2010/08/12/dr ... rs-in-u-s/

Nintendo really wants to make the series well known outside japan

“I want to increase the number of people worldwide that understand the appeal of Dragon Quest,”

^After a good initial spell Level-5 haven't been as impressive.
White Knight fell really flat.

Still hope Ni no Kuni is worth it past the presentation.

White Knight 1, YES very flat. White Knight 2, totally different game (so much so it even contains the first game within it)

Aside from that they've still be impressive. Haven't got to try Ninokuni yet tho.

Can't say I've ever been particularly interested in Dragon Quest. I've tried to be; it always seemed popular and high-profile, so I figured there must be something there worth getting into.
But every time I try to get into it, I'm just dumbstruck by how bland it all seems. I understand if the series was one of the originators of the general JRPG style, but it just feels... boring. I really can't see why it actually has continued popularity like it does.

^That's pretty much what I said about FF in the other topic

Not that I'm a fan of DQ, but I really thought DQ8 was a wonderful game.

Its a love it or hate it thing. Its archaic, it refuses to move into the future and follows most of the conventions of early RPGs like Wizardry and stubbornly resists changing, thing is, thats the best thing about it. You never have to worry about gambit systems, or turning into a stupid looking crystal monster, for the most part you always know what you're getting into. The series has seen growth (especially in the hands of Level 5) but at the end of the day the story, music and art are done by the same 3 guys who did em over 20 years ago.

The thing about FF, though, is that it at least changes its general style with every game. Even if you don't like one entry in the series, you can check out another one and it might actually appeal to you, from the art to the battle system.
DQ on the other hand has pretty much had the same ugly Akira Toriyama art style for two decades, and the battle system is always, always turn-based, primarily showing the enemy on screen with a bunch of stats around it.
Blah.
I don't hate it, I just don't see the point in it going on for so long.

I won't continue like this, since it's the DQ topic and it's kind of dumb to bash a series in its dedicated topic. Just had to chime in.

I have plenty of taste in art. I just didn't grow up loving Dragonball Z like seemingly everyone else in the world, so I'm not pre-programmed to liking Toriyama's stuff.

I hate this whole art thing. It just makes people think they know more about something because they have classed it as art. I don't look at a painting to try and understand a deep meaning that the artist put in there.

You been watching too much tv Riku.
Art is not always about a deeper meaning, just that it looks great and different styles of music, film and gaming.
It's more an asthetic than some faggot poking holes in a water bottle & calling it art with some fag name like "my holy cock in france at night"

I grew up on Shonen Jump and Tatsunoko, and while I despise Dragonball z I love original Dragonball, mostly because its a funny little adventure based on Journey to the West (Its the reason I went on to read it, as well as the other great Chinese literature like The Romance of Three kingdoms, Marshes of Mount Liang and Dream of the red chamber)

DBZ is just screaming the show. They had my attention up till Frieza but everything after that was absolute balls. In any case I'm not grown on shallow shit like DBZ but rather well animated epics like Classic Dragonball and Dr.Slump.
