I remember being on holiday in France when the worst heat wave that they had received in over twenty years hit, typically the week I went there. It was scorching and the death toll was high then, as well.

Isn't this a case of "lie, damn lies and statistics"? I bet they're including the deaths of people drowning by jumping into old quarries and stuff like that, where the link is tenuous. People wouldn't jump in if it was cold, but their bad decision making is the main cause of their death, rather than the heat itself...

It gets pretty high here in Arizona, around 118-120 sometimes in the summer. It can really come to a shock to those who aren't used to it though. Plus if they didn't have any air conditioning there isn't really an escape. My air conditioning broke last summer and I got a hotel room over the weekend until they could fix it... forget living in that hot box for three days.


The heat I can take but when I was in Europe a couple of winters ago I was practically in the fetal position ready to die... so cold...

I lived in a place without air conditioning for about a year and a half, and wouldn't you know it was during one of the hottest summers of the decade. The average temp during that summer was around 105-108. All I had a was a regular old fan.

This heat is getting a bit much. For me, and many I know, 25 degrees C is still manageable. Around 30 is too much. Waiting for a delayed bus for half an hour in -15 C was actually less harsh than walking 10 minutes to the store these last weeks.
But the last 12 years have been the warmest since they started measuring here and it looks like it will get worse. So maybe more will soon start getting airconditioning like in the US?

How the hell could someone die in a goddamn heat wave? I just ran with a goddamn 55 pound 5 year old on my back in 90+ degree (F) weather today. I didn't even drink any water (all the water I had was for the kid). When i was in the desert I worked out in 100+ degree weather. Ridiculous that people would DIE from a heat wave.

Natural selection, homie. But then again the people who died probably already had kids.
