Macbook Pro RAM Upgrade

Postby Kenny » Thu Jul 25, 2013 6:03 pm

I'm thinking of upgrading my RAM from 2 gigs to 4 gigs but I need some advice on what to get. Alot of people buy the Kingston brand but it's a bit too pricey and not sure if I really need it when I have alternatives. Here are my specs:

Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro3,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.2 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 800 MHz

Code: Select all
BANK 1/DIMM1:

  Size:   1 GB
  Type:   DDR2 SDRAM
  Speed:   667 MHz

BANK 0/DIMM0:

  Size:   1 GB
  Type:   DDR2 SDRAM
  Speed:   667 MHz

And here's what i'm looking at:

http://www.amazon.com/APPLE-MAC-PRO-BUF ... g+ram+ddr2

http://www.amazon.com/BUFFERED-PC2-5300 ... g+ram+ddr2

I read some reviews of people buying the wrong RAM, so i'm guessing since my Mac is a little old I need DDR2?

Open it up, take the existing one out. It usually states on it. If not, post the picture and your model of MacBook.

Apple products are designed for rich people.
if you want an upgrade, simply reach into your solid gold safe and buy yourself a new one that's "better".

There's always that too.

I found out the type of RAM I might need but i'll also crack this baby open and double check.

For starters, that RAM is for the Mac Pro. A desktop computer. Super not compatible with your laptop. Second, that is what is commonly reffered to as server RAM

What you need is something like this
http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Modules- ... g+ram+ddr2

or this
http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-PC2-5300- ... g+ram+ddr2

also
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820146701

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820226044 This one is "fastest"

Also, for future reference, crucial.com has a thing on their website that helps you find the right RAM for your computer.

Yeah, found that out after further research.

I was directed here from the Apple forums: http://www.datamemorysystems.com/apple- ... -upgrades/

And began looking at this: http://www.datamemorysystems.com/dm50-190e-x-2/

Appreciate all the help and local stand-up comedy caliber attempts at humor. I think I'll be ready to order tomorrow.
