Re: What's happened in your life in the past 14 years?

It's depressing reading all these success stories, lol. I was 14 in '99 when I first played Shenmue. 16 or 17 when I played the sequel on the Xbox. I am now 29, and will be hitting dirty thirty in less than a month. There's been a whole book of events and changes. I never finished college, though, and have been toiling away at crappy, dead-end jobs pretty much ever since I graduated high school. I met the love of my life in '08, and got dumped by the love of my life in '10. Had a few meaningless flings since then, but I'm thoroughly damaged goods. A has-been that never was. I rent a decent apartment I can barely afford. I sleep way too much. Yeah... life was a lot better when I was 14 - 17. I've been watching a lot of porn and contemplating suicide lately. But hey, Shenmue 3's coming out, so I got that going for me!

Don't worry. Shenmue 3 will heal your broken soul.

Re: What's happened in your life in the past 14 years?

Great thread! I was a lurker here for some time but didn't register until 2005. Can't say I've been very active during the last 6-7 years though. I'm actually amazed I could remember my password.

Anyway, very interesting to read how much has happened in people's lives during these 14 years. Sadly I can't really say the same thing about myself. At least not many interesting things.

Still live in the same apartment, still no driver's licence (not that I've actually tried to get one, but still...), got a little fat, lost a lot of hair, lost my two remaining grandparents, almost lost my old friend (the same guy who got me interested in Shenmue back in 99/00) but decided to contact him again after the S3-reveal. We're ok now - thanks to Shenmue. How weird is that...

The band split up for good back in 2002 and I haven't really been playing much since then, apart from practicing at home and playing Highway to Hell and Summer of '69 -type stuff at work-related events.

Got outsourced in '09 (a great company I'd been with for 10+ years), had a couple of so-so years with the new employer until they decided to relocate most of the business to a very distant part of the country. Was offered to follow, but that would have been impossible. I had to quit. Was unemployed for a year until I found a new job. Not very pleasant at all. Somewhat shady company that didn't pay their employees very much and treated many of us like crap. Worked there for a year but didn't get my contract renewed back in February. Been looking for work since then.

No kids of my own but my sister has two cool little girls now. First one born in '06. Man, that was quite a chock for me.

Oh wow, basically my whole life happened. In 2001, I was a 10 yr old girl. So I've graduated from elementary school middle school, high school, and 2 different colleges. I have bachelor degrees in music business and in information technology. I graduated in 2013. I'm currently working as a junior software engineer in boston. I've been with my awesome boyfriend for over 4 years and we share a really nice apartment. I love to travel and I've been to most continents. Got my TEFL certification in Thailand in 2011. Just came home from morocco in May. Life's pretty good. :) even better now that there will be a shenmue 3!!!! 8)

Re: Serious proposal: #30to3point6 - 1/10th of backers donat

I think it's a great idea.
I've stated several times that I'm able to donate at least $500 a month if they offer a Paypal option.
That will be around $13,000 on top of my current KS pledge of $815 I will give towards development costs.

Re: What's happened in your life in the past 14 years?

A lot !

Kept learning japanese, had the chance to live in Japan for a year and half, got married to a japanese woman and met Yu Suzuki !

I never gave up on Shenmue during the past 14 years and my passion is still the same, if not stronger than ever before. Also met Takenobu Mitsuyoushi, Naoki Yoshida etc, so I've really enjoyed everything I've went through.

I am looking forward awesome events and definetly going to try my best to lead a beautiful life.

Glad there's still so many fans out there and can't wait for all of us to share our feelings about Shenmue III once we get the chance to play it !

Re: What's happened in your life in the past 14 years?

My life fell apart after high school, I was homeless, I started losing my hair, I cut off all contact with my abusive family and any other toxic person in my life, I eventually got a bad efficiency apartment in a bad part of town, but it was my own, I worked part time jobs until I got a full-time one, saved up enough money to buy some nice things and then moved across the country to live in the desert far away from where I grew up, safe and free to rethink my life and start living for the first time truly on my own terms.

In that time I gained 80 pounds, then lost it after becoming a marathon runner, then an ultramarathon runner, I would run double marathons on the weekend for fun. Once I ran 100 miles in one go. I stopped. I realized what things I could never get or get back, even if I was an ultra-fit financially secure person. I started gaining weight again. I gained 150 pounds. I still live life on my own terms, although I don't care about much.

After June 15th I was forced to stop and think about everything in my life that I had given up on, about everything that I thought was dead, or impossible. I cried so much.

I remember 14 years ago having a conversation with the only long-term girlfriend I ever had. Things were not going well between us because I knew that I was not the kind of person who would be able to give her a stable life like she deserved and it made me depressed. I told her I had no passion for anything and that I didn't really like anything. "That's not true," she said with conviction. "You like Shenmue."

I had a dream last night that we got back together and lived happily ever after. I understand waking up that that's incredibly unrealistic, but deep inside a part of me feels like anything is possible, and I can dream again.

Re: What's happened in your life in the past 14 years?

When shenmue first came out, I had just finished my first semester of freshman year of highschool. Since then, I've attended college and graduated. I went from someone who was learning the basics of SDL and game programming, to learning microprocessor assembly all on my own, to picking up and learning virtual reality development, to now owning my own game development studio. I do professional work in VR, I am currently working with MD Anderson on VR cancer research and development (long story, but short explanation is we are designing VR games that can alleviate pain in cancer patients simply by playing).

I got a puppy the same year Shenmue was released. He was put to sleep about 6 months ago.

I have fallen in and out of love twice in that time. My nephew was born just before Shenmue was released, he now has his driving permit.

I got a Turbo Duo alongside Shenmue that christmas. I had 1 game for it. Today, my Turbo Duo collection totals over 150.

My best friend moved from down the street to an entire state away about 2 months after Shenmue was released. Against all odds, we remained extremely close friends, and still remain best friends to this day. He now lives about 2 hours away (houston to Austin) and we see each other regularly. He is the only other person I know who played Shenmue (he also played Shenmue II with me when it first came out, as I visited him in Louisiana with my Xbox and we marathoned the game). He was just as excited as I was when I told him Shenmue III was coming out. He has a PC now, and has backed the game.

Man how time flies.

Shenmue means a lot to me, but honestly Yu Suzuki making games means way, way more. More than most would really understand. I grew up playing Yu Suzuki's games. All my neighbors and friends had NESes growing up. My dad, hero of mine, got me a Sega Master System instead. He told me "Sega was better." It was. The pack-in game was Hang-On. My father and I would play hang-on over, and over again. We lived out in the country outside of Houston, by this small airport. I used to think, as a kid, that the course from Hang-On was modeled after our drive from our home into the city of Houston and then back because of the way time would change in the game and the general look and feel of the graphics. It always reminded me of christmas eve, because we would drive to my grandma's and open presents at midnight, then come back home as the sun was coming up, just like the pink sky at the end of the game.

I played Yu Suzuki's games on the master system, then the genesis, then several arcade cabinets, then my 32X, then Saturn, then finally dreamcast. I got them all as they were new. We didn't know at the time that the same guy was responsible for all the games we were playing, but my dad and I always said there was something about those Sega games we played that just were flat-out better than the competition.

Those games had a profound impact on me. It got me started in computer programming at 8 years old. My father, noticing my interest, really encouraged me to persue my career. Yu Suzuki's games instilled upon me a fascination with 3D and ultimately VR, and it was a lifelong dream to work with virtual reality. I opened my VR company about 2 months before Shenmue III was announced.

Dreams do come true.

Re: Kickstarter:Final value and overall success assessment

Even if the KS finished right now it would already be an undeniable amazing success.

Guys, let's face the facts here. This is Shenmue 3 we are talking about, 20 days ago 99% of gamers didnt even know the hell it was, the prequels are only available on fucking Xbox and Dreamcast and they came out FIFTEEN years ago.

It was already an incredible success that it got announced as a KS campaign, everything thats been happening since then trespasses in the realm of dreams.

Re: Update #27 New rewards!

Is there any word from passing on PAYPAL when the KS ends?

I doubt you'll hear any word on it. They want as many people as possible to fund the Kickstarter. If they announced that they'll accept donations and offer rewards after the KS ends, then they'd be no sense of urgency and it could put people off donating in the next 10 days.

They probably want to keep quiet on it so that those who haven't pledged yet will think "shit, I better donate before it's too late".

I replayed Shenmue II disc 4 last night

I have a save specifically for when I want to replay it because I consider it one of gamings biggest milestones and achievements.

Before, it always made me sad, but last night I did it for the first time with the knowledge we are getting Shenmue III, and it made me really, really happy. I was happy seeing all of these questions and stuff that I may actually get answers to. Shenhua talks about water buffalo, and life in Bailu, and the old lady who taught her how to sew, all this stuff that's hinted in 3 you think you'll never see ever. And we're fucking getting it. We're actually going to get it! \:D/ Every time I played this section of the game I had a sense of melancholy, but for the first time I could sit back and enjoy it in full without pressure that I will never get answers to my questions.

I highly suggest everyone else do the same. What an amazing experience! =D>

Shenmue III Companion App?

Browsing over the Mac request thread got me thinking.

Destiny has a companion app and I look at it daily. I constantly transfer gear to and from my vault, look at my character stats, my friends characters, browse forums and more.

What if Shenmue III had one? Put it on iOS/Android and offer features like:

• View game progress
• View notebook and flip pages
• View photos you've taken in-game
• View move scrolls and practice while you're on-the-go (updates Ryo in-game)
• Mini-games (Lucky Hit would be amazing!)
• View discovered maps
• Connect to forums (here would be nice)

I'm sure there's lots more ideas but these are off the top of my head. I'd absolutely love to be somewhere on the go, listening to the Shenmue III soundtrack in my earbuds and engaging with this app.

Thoughts?

Edit- I just thought of the perfect name for it: Shenmue Passport. Like the spirit of the original passport, put some of those ideas into the app as well.

Re: Im not calling Yu Suzuki a liar.....

I don't know about that, but I do believe a savvy investor/company will pick up the slack and help Yu Suzuki deliver the perfect sequel to Shenmue 2. You don't get to the top of the Kickstarter charts and not attract some attention. I don't care if Shenmue 2 was a flop. Re-release the originals while the hype is still there and deliver a stunning third game. We're in.

I think "Give whatever you can" is fine. Encourage people to up their pledges, but just be specific with the donation date more than anything. Shout about the 17th to focus the 'final blow' into one day, maybe put the date in the banner.

Just my thoughts, it's your call.

Re: "Indie" or "AAA" game?

Why would a Shenmue fan expect Shenmue III, after the colossal budget of the first two games, to be AAA (really, really big bucks)? Why in the world would you expect this?

Well, on a similar note, it was ludacris for anyone to expect Shenmue 3's announcement.

Expecting Shenmue III is one thing. Expecting it to be AAA (hundreds of millions spent by an invested party on development and marketing) is another. If Shenmue was going to return it was never going to be AAA, and the fact that the only tiers that exist now in gamers minds is AAA or indie is fucking sad given the history of this business. We used to have all kinda of types of games and budgets, from indie, to d, c, b, all the way down to a, aa, and aaa but now only two of those exists now apparently?

Looking at the 10m figure, Shenmue III looks like it could very well be a B game.

Some B games:

http://games.kitguru.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/deadly_premontionss__3_.jpg

http://www.psu.com/media/articles/image/dynastywarriors8_review3.jpg

Not all games are AAA, people. Jeez.

Let me spell out what AAA means. GTAV cost 300 million dollars to make and advertise. Destiny cost 500 million. THAT is AAA. And you are expecting Shenmue III to be AAA? :rotflmao:

Re: Yu Suzuki Live on Nico Nico Douga 07/12

Fantastic interview.

Sounds like no matter what, we're getting a true Shenmue game. It's just the scale and openness that depends on funding.

Also, what he said about crying, being moved by our support, and about video games having a unique way of bonding with the spirit of a player, was really beautiful and proves why we are all so willing to support him so loyally. He really gets it. He GETS how much we all care and what it means, and the importance of this moment is not lost on him. That speaks volumes for the game he'll try to make and for him as a person.

Re: $10 mill was never going to happen

This idea that everyone should donate said amount of money is a ridiculous one. If people are supporting with whatever they can, good on them. People need to stop stressing themselves out of the "what ifs" and just appreciate that we have Shenmue 3 now. PayPal after the Kickstarter is over is a possibility. So is Shenmue HD. I honestly am finding some of this talk about the Kickstarter really toxic (many times I've seen people on here just turn on each other and say some horrible or stupid things) and at this stage now, will be glad once it's all finally over, quite honestly.

People should just be happy, for fuck's sake. This is the best time for Shenmue fans... in almost 15 years. Get some perspective, people.

Re: "Making Sense of Shenmue 3"

I guess all these other people dont realize what this kick starter was really about: 1. Fanatic Fans putting their money where their mouth is that have waited years in silence for this announcement, turns out there was quite a few of them. 2. A ray of hope for many fans of many other series that are considered dead or dis-continued, this proving that the "impossible" is indeed possible.

I think the people dis gruntled with the Shenmue 3 kickstarter, hadnt played the original games, hadnt felt the unique feeling that the Shenmue franchise gives, and didnt understand the already rocky history behind its development costs and sales and why so many fans of these games didnt care either way how this thing got done, or who funded it, and didnt mind helping fund it regardless of anything.

Lets get one thing straight, this isnt about pointing fingers about money. This is about art, video game art, and the way this series made so many people feel, like nothing before it and nothing after it. And to quote Huber from Game Trailers: "This is about a story, and Yu Suzuki's mission to tell it"

Also, I am really questioning peoples expectations of Kickstarter anymore, I mean isnt it blatantly obvious this site exists to get projects "started"... I mean it says that right in the name. I thought the whole time there would be other backers and investors that would probably help fund this game, and I looked at the kickstarter as a way to fork over some serious cash for some serious Shenmue goodies once this game comes out, thats what I felt I was really paying for. I was even telling folks come 2017 I will be receiving something of a Shenmue care package in the mail with my copies of Shenmue 3! haha. Suzuki had to muster the numbers from the fans throught kickstarter to front to the big guys to get them on board, I just dont think they understand there was no other way this game was going to happen.

Tomorrow Shenmue haters around the globe will eat crow

The next 24 hours is a fuck you to all Shenmue haters everywhere.

Despite a half assed ks campaign handled by morons, being FAR less known in gaming, HUNDREDS of articles spreading misinformation on why you shouldn't support Shenmue III kickstarter, it will go on to become the highest backed game kickstarter of all time and set a new record despite people telling us for over a decade that no one wants nor cares about Shenmue. Far more well known and celebrated franchises and creators have been surpassed and after tomorrow no one will be able to deny Shenmue, its fans, or continue to treat it like a meme despite being the great game franchise of all time.

Eat it.

Re: Ouch, the comments on the youtube trailer are harsh...

Like Theif was saying, we have now reached relevance in the gaming world again.
The project, Yu Suzuki, the fan community.. we are all open game now for trolls, fanboys and ignorant know-it-alls.

-The game isnt on Xbox and is console exclusive on PS4? = We will have Xbox fanboys try and discredit the worth of the game.
-The game doesn't have teh b3st gr4f1x evar?!1 = Looks like pong.
-They never heard of it before? = Doesn't matter whatever its like, it sucks anyways.
-They don't understand how the funding/development works? = Dr. Evil is controlling everything behind doors.

Eventually one of us are going to have a brain aneurysm fighting against the nay sayers. I will probably be that person eventually. Until then I'm going to save my energy for when the game is out and reviewers start slamming it for whatever dumb reasons.

Realistic NPC's in Shenmue 3

I've heard people say that Shenmue 3 won't feel unique, as the elements it was famous for (intricate open-world, mini games, QTE's), can be found in a bunch of titles now. I obviously disagree, but it got me thinking about the one element no one really copied, having a realistic community simulation. For instance, the Funny Bear Burger guy will wake up, go to his shack, roll up the shutter, do a days work, close up, sweep outside and then walk home. You can even watch his apartment light switch off as he goes to sleep. I absolutely love this attention to detail and, apart from Animal Crossing, haven't seen it in other modern games.

During the postmortem Yu Suzuki reminisced about accidentally losing all the dock workers who'd become stuck in the Tomato convenience store. They were programmed to visit at a certain time, but couldn't leave through the narrow, crowded entrance. I find this attempt to create a functioning community amazing and I hope the NPC's in Choubu receive the same treatment. It could be something truly unique in modern RPG's.

Do you think Suzuki will keep this community simulation aspect even on a limited budget?

Re: Realistic NPC's in Shenmue 3

To be fair, games like Bethesda's TES series do have NPCs that all have full work, sleep, and leisure schedules. It was one of the most touted features beginning with Oblivion, and continuing in Skyrim.

The difference - and in my opinion advantage - to Shenmue's implementation of this (apart from being the first game to really innovate it) is the smaller, more closed community allows those schedules and behaviors to 1) feel more important, and 2) actually get noticed by the player.

Sometimes in modern sandbox games, there's almost TOO much freedom to really stop and appreciate the more subtle stuff that's going on. But with Shenmue, everything from the camera's closeness to Ryo, to the methodical pace, to the smaller scale of the world all forces those things into the player's attention front and center. And as a result, they feel so much more immersive and REAL to me.

In sandboxes, the journey and the experience is about massive visual vistas and freedom to roam and create your own personal story. In Shenmue, the the journey is Ryo's, and the experience is about intimate, granular minutia and everyday life details. It's almost more like a life sim than an open world game.

That was by far what I loved most about Shenmue.

Sidenote: What was the first game to feature dynamic shadows that change with time of day? Because Shenmue 2 did a fantastic job with that and I remember thinking at the time that it was amazing. Did it innovate that too? Or at least beat others to it?

Re: Game Informer Shenmue Chronicles Playthrough

I watched this and the people of this site rated Shenmue with 7.5/10. It seems the rating is so, because they can't even handle the D-Pad...

Shenmue needs patience, spatial/environmental recognition, focus on world/characters, emotional affection and a certain kind of intelligent.

And it seems these people are lacking those, therefore they can't comprehend/embrace it and/or they're spoiled by guided constant action games.

Keep choosing the "right" games Phil Spencer, the results are showing how good you've done.

Re: Phil Spencer (Xbox) talks about Shenmue 3

Honestly, I am not all that surprised.

I also speak as a former Xbox fan, I had the original Xbox at launch in 2001, and I recall the controversy over Microsoft developing a console and some of the comments that it was simply a PC and that gamers wanted a console, regardless, I took the dive. While some of the launch titles were nice, the Xbox always lacked what the ps2 had in regards to third party games and even exclusives, but innovation and the customer base was pushing for the controversial broadband only online gaming, something of course dreamcast had the capability to do with online gaming as well. The only exception was I was glad the Xbox had some nice fighting games as well as shenmue 2 at the time, and without the Xbox, I would not have had the opportunity to try shenmue 2, but it would be foolish to not realize how much damage it actually did to shenmue and why shenmue 3 may have never seen the day because of Microsoft.

We all know that Peter Moore jumped ship and pretty much killed the dreamcast, obviously shenmue had a rocky start having to go from the sega Saturn practically complete and then developed for the dreamcast, by the time shenmue 2 was released, Peter Moore pretty much canceled the game from coming out to the U.S. And we had to wait an entire year for it to come to Xbox splitting the fanbase, on top of that, Microsoft was supposed to market shenmue 2 at the time. I do remember a trailer on Xboxs website at the time and I do remember in official Xbox magazine there was a small demo of qte action, but outside of that, most of the Xbox gamer base either wasn't interested in shenmue, or there was barely any marketing or information about the game, it was just kind of thrown out there with no real exposure to the degree halo or some other top aaa game was given exposure, shenmue never got the respect it deserved from Microsoft and it probably didn't help that most Xbox gamers had not played the original game.

Most of the Xbox fanbase at that time was primarily into halo, or mech assault or some other Xbox live title, ninja gaiden, or the various fighter and sports games, that was the direction Microsoft was headed while Sony was more focused on the gta series, resident evil and silent hill, RPGs, racing games, simulators, etc. even many of the nice looking games that were exclusive to Japan for Xbox never came over to the U.S. All in attempt for Microsoft to win over the Japanese market.

The very fact is that there is little to no surprise that Microsoft probably secured the title to prevent anyone else from getting it as Sony was securing deals with all the exlusives at the time.

By the time the Xbox 360 came out, it was a clear that they were attempting to shift into a primary role of online gaming, fps and sports games. Even the Xbox live community represents the gamer base that they don't respect the general single player games or story driven games, it exists but it is practically in the lower tier. You can see this on any gaming forum be it gamefaqs or gamespot and the lack of respect for a game like shenmue.

I stopped supporting Xbox after my gamer tag was stolen and Microsoft literally did nothing about it despite the fact my security information was breached and a call center agent provided information on my account without proper authentication, and the general business practices of my Xbox 360 falling out of warranty thanks to the poor quality printed circuit boards and solder on the first batch of Xbox 360s.

Honestly, I am glad that Microsoft is not getting the game, it sucks for the fans, but the amount of damage that was caused, the lack of marketing, the wait we had to endure to get the game, and the lack of respect from the general fanbase, I really believe that it was the right decision as shenmue should be enjoyed by gamers who appreciate the series and I am sure the Sony and PC market will appreciate such a rich game moreso than the general Xbox fanbase. This is nothing against Xbox gamers, but if you know the history, then you will understand why we have been waiting as long as we have. Perhaps if shenmue 2 had been released in the U.S. For dreamcast, it would have been a different story.

Re: Shenmue 1 and 2 HD on Steam?

Making a new 16 bit era Sonic, a sequel to Generations, allowing Shenmue III to be made and giving Ys net use of materials, putting Bayonetta on Steam;etc are all pretty damn good decisions. Sometimes you guys give Sega far more flack than they really deserve. Sega wouldn't put Shenmue HD on just steam. Come on now.

Re: Shenmue 1 and 2 HD on Steam?

Jurgen Post (SEGA Europe COO), last year on the subject of Shenmue HD: "If we are to do it, we'd want to do a fantastic conversion to the current platforms".

It's not just coming to PC.

Re: YSNET officially announce the delay of Shenmue 3.

I am actually excited as hell about this. Now it feels like a full on proper development schedule, and not a rushed indie schedule. Great decision!

Re: New Ryo & Shenhua models from press release

Funny how a few years back people were saying how satisfied they would be with a Shenmue 3 book, manga or even an unfinished Dreamcast build to be leaked online to give us closure to the story.

Now we're getting the real deal and we're all moaning about virtually everything we're seeing in each and every update. Suzuki must feel so encouraged.
Well, I was never one of those people and never understood those who said such things. Shenmue 1 and 2 were masterpieces and I expect it to keep that way. I'd rather have nothing at all, than having a manga, a novel or a shitty game just to say they finished the story.

Obviously, it sometimes still feels like a dream that Shenmue 3 is a reality. I had lost all hope many years ago and, as a gamer, Shenmue 3's announcement was the best videogame news I've ever had in my life. So I am grateful for it. Now, does this mean that I should be happy about everything they show us? No, if it looks like shit, it looks like shit.

Again, I'll hold my judgement until I see a more final version of the game and that too in motion. I know this is just work in progress material, not to mention they just did a simple photoshop of the characters on top of the background, with no lighting, shadows, or anything. That's why I'm not too worried yet, because this is simply not enough to know how the game will actually look like and I'm still optimistic that it will look great, so don't get me wrong about that.

Having said that, this is what we have now and this thread is about these pics that they just released, so we are talking about what we think about these pics. And Ryo and Shenhua look like shit in that pic. At least to me, they do. Again, they're certainly an improvement over the KS pitch video (especially Ryo), but that's not saying much. They still have a very long way to go. And I find it odd that, after all this time, they still haven't managed to make a better-looking Ryo than some stuff already made by fans at their homes.

Anyway, in just a few days, we'll have a much better idea of what the game, and, namely, the characters, will actually look like (though that too will still be work in progress).

Re: New Ryo & Shenhua models from press release

The Dojo banner is the quality I was expecting. I don't know why a few members keep insisting that those models are worse or somehow unrealistic to expect, but whatever. No point in droning on about this.

Re: New Ryo & Shenhua models from press release

I find the models very ugly from an aesthetic standpoint. Compared to the original series and compared to modern games. Im not sure why matching the passport models should be such a fantasy.
