Yeah, billiards is a skill-shot game (as seen in Shenmue), and pool is, well, pool.

Well, it used to be. Kinda. It's like how Football (how we know it) used to be called "Association Football" and came under the umbrella of just "Football". Snooker, Pool, and other variations came under the umbrella term "Billiards", but over time, Billiards became known as the trick shot version (they usually don't have pockets on the table, but there's so many variations of the game now it'd be difficult to keep up with all the names)
