Shenmue I and II cinema shorts.

I asked a similar question before but more info has come to light. I'm pretty sure some flash backs have been confirmed to be in the game now. I'll get to why this is relevant in a moment.

My question: Is the lantern bug trailer a small preview representation of the Shenmue I and II cinemas will look? I mean, they've recreated several parts of the last games already to show on their kickstarter so I think instead of just using cut scenes with video filters, they'll actually be remaking them altogether.

Previously it was suggested that they'll probably just be video clips of the old games with high resolution and filters. But the more I think about it, the less I think it will be that way. The aesthetics of the games are totally different, the lighting is different, the character models are different using old clips will look extremely out of place. Now, here is where the flash backs come in, to do them YSnet has to recreate locations and maps from the previous games already, it seems trivial to not do the extra work of using these assets for the cinema shorts. In fact, I think it'd be cost affective to not do so.

I think the cinema shorts will be done with new assets through the Unreal 4 engine. Like when a new a season of a show starts it recaps the major events.

Now I wouldn't be surprised to see flash backs in Shenmue 3 to events that happened in 1 & 2. It all gets done in engine IMO. I don't see anything being used from the previous games other then for inspiration in creating it in the new engine.

Part of me is hoping this is the case, but something I realized is they would have to recreate a ton of environments for the cinematics - in addition to higher fidelity character models and animations (and perhaps re-record some VO with some better direction!). Maybe there are some creative shortcuts they could take, but it might not be the same.

Obviously, it would be a lot cheaper to simply record and edit the cinematics from Shenmue 1 and 2 but I agree it would be awesome if they could recreate a lot of the old cutscenes.

Whatever they do, I think it'll be a good idea to release some (if not all) of the cinematics on gaming sites as trailers or promotional materials for Shenmue III. Make it so you don't have to buy the game to get invested into the story.

Using old footage may not be a too bad if they remaster it. If they take the straight 480p 4:3 aspect ratio and splice it together like the Shenmue DVD with the Xbox version. I think that would be a slap in the face to the fans. It was a stretch goal for $200k now if that stretch goal was like $2k that would be one thing. But I doubt they would do that because that throw off the whole look of the game and give a bad first impression which is that last thing they need for Shenmue 3.

I don't think this is an issue to begin with; the flashbacks will be done with the new engine...honestly, anything else would be retarded (sorry :) )

It would be awesome if they recreate some of the major cutscenes of both games. Would be a glimpse of what Remakes could look like. Of course this would take a lot of extra effort but I'd be excited to see this instead of a new digest movie.
