Has anyone else quit gaming?

It's a silly concept to me, the idea of "quitting" videogames.
It's a form of media. It's like saying "I quit movies" or "I quit books." It's not something you have to dedicate yourself to in order to still partake in them. It's not a job. You just do it when you feel like it, and if you don't? Big whoop. Just wait until the urge hits you. And if it never does? Big whoop again.
I'd think it would take more effort to "quit" an entire form of media, than to just do it here and there when the mood hits. By quitting, you're dedicating yourself to something, whereas the opposite doesn't require any dedication whatsoever.

EDIT: Oh, and just noticed Kenny said basically the same thing on the first page.

Profits were the main concern now that the audience for games had broadened so much, money corrupted gaming last generation. I can easily see why someone would have quit gaming out right. Today, i think things might be a little better and could potentially be alot better in the future, but its still TBD. When we are living in a day where Japan is barely buying consoles anymore, japanese developers seemingly almost given up on trying to make modern console games even, I fear the worst for the games I love.
^^ it makes sense.
if the question was 'would you quit present gen gaming?' my answer is likely to be different.
if ps3 (and competitors of the time) is considered to be 'last generation' then that's as present as i'll go anyway.
there's a LOT of prior generations and libraries to go at that not been encountered yet.
...
i don't know what category i fall under, i don't have one..i think?! (maybe twat?! none is better.)

I can understand it to a point. To play the latest Uncharted game you're looking at paying around $350-400. With films there is a much lower entry point. I can understand if you just don't enjoy playing games but if you do and just say you're going to quit that's stupid.

You kinda have to invest a lot more of time in videogames. Even a short game today is 8/10 hours to beat basic storymode. In that time you can watch 7/8 movies.

Also I think that "enjoyment per minute" is less with videogames, sometimes is just mindless fun, sometimes is mindless boring. In movies/books pretty much every second is "content" in games there's a lot of filler to do anything.

it's a perspective.
but the difference between games, films and books, is one of them is interactive, and the others, static. :P (the book is god mode! leaves EVERYTHING to the imagination. great for the occasion, but not if you want something in between, films or games.)
1, games. = interactive. :P
2, films and books = static.

What about games that take minutes to play? Alot of people play apps nowadays that are basically short bursts of satisfaction akin to the Arcade days.

This is not just about the regular 8 hour experience. It says "gaming" not "console gaming" or "traditional handheld gaming". And there's ALOT of filler in many books and movies too. I think it has more to do with the fact some people still think videogames are childish, long winded experiences rather than the universal quick to play and put down entertainment it's evolved into.

I understand it's not like quitting smoking or something like that. You don't consciously say, "I' quit". For me, the last consoles I bought were Gamecube and PS2. I did consider buying either an Xbox 360 or a PS3 at some point. However, I don't know for what reason, there semed to be never enough games for me to invest my money and go buy one of the systems. So at first, I decided to wait for a year or two and let the prices drop. But still the games which were there didn't seem to justify the purchase of a console for me. There were some titles I was interested in but not enough.

So I decided I already have enough games at home and it's enough for me to replay my old games from time to time. It wasn't a decision against gaming, I just didn't feel the need to own any current console. My need for games was kind of saturated and so at around 2008, I stopped reading gaming websites and magazines and gradually lost touch with current gaming in general. Furthermore, I have never been interested in mobile phone games or browser games or anything, so I never got into that whole "casual gaming" thing.

The PS4 I will buy about 2 and a half years down the line will be my first current console in more than ten years.

The Sega Genesis/Megadrive was my first console, played a fuckload of Sonic, Shinobi, Phantasy Star and that until I focused more on my career and social life well, just until Playstation rocked the world with MGS for me. Dreamcast and Shenmue was magical and the best thing ever since. Xbox came and Halo caught my eyes. Pretty much now, I've quit gaming but still play Shenmue 1 and 2 only. When 3 comes out, I'll be playing that alot too. It's pretty much just Shenmue for me now unless something new is worth renting.
