Sony is destroying the game industry!

Ok, first off I know tons of mainstreamers who own all the systems, that doesent make a difference, second, the PS2 is more pwerful than the DC...duh, I don't know what you were thinking there.

Lucky for us Microsoft jumped into the scene.

But Sony learned a lesson from the playstation 1. If someones playstation breaks they will just buy anouther. That thought Sony that if they want to save money just make there new console with super cheap parts. Why not? If it breaks people just buy anouther one. In the DVD world if such a thing were to happen and a dvd player made with cheap parts were to break down you could simply buy anouther dvd player made by someone else and still be able to enjoy you're entire dvd collection. But if you're PS2 breaks down as a result of poor worksmanship are you going to be able to say the hell with sony and take all of your PS2 games to you're xbox or gamecube? No of course not. The only way to play PS2 games is on a PS2 and if you'res breaks unless you want you're entire collection to go down the toilet you have to buy anouther. Sony can do this as they know they are number 1 and use this to there vicious advantage. That is why I do not respect Sony as far as I would throw them. At least my SNES didn't crap out right after the warrenty expired.

That's B.S, no offence. People constantly like to point a finger at Sony and claim that they make "cheap" consoles when in fact, all of today's consoles are composed of "cheap" technology. For example, God forbid you get even the smallest scratch on either an Xbox or Dreamcast game because both consoles will refuse, by all means possible, to read the disc. The lasers used in both consoles are incredibly sensitive to things like scratches and dirt. That's just one of the many problems with today's platforms- they're too damn delicate and will crap out on you at any moment. The only reason why you hear more complaints from Sony's side is because, well, they have more consumers than the competition. Thus, more people with more consoles = more people who will encounter a problem with their respective machines.

Hmm, this illustrates a point I made earlier in the forum's life. I was partly wrong back then as well though. This is a good thread, there's been no OTT fanboyism yet. The reason why I was wrong back then, is I stood up quite fanboyishly for Sony, but now I see that it's true that Sony HAVE sort of corrupted the game market...yeah they've made it into a mainstream pursuit where loads more money is made now, but it HAS corrupted stuff up 'cos FIFA, F1 etc gets re-released every year and squashes the "hardcore" stuff like Shenmue etc...but it has to be said, the PS1 was and is (I still play mine) a great machine and they DID beat Sega's Saturn and Nintendo's N64 quite fair and square. I get the feeling that if the Xbox had a Sony badge on it that it'd still be hated, 'cos it's quite fashionable, among hardcore gamers, to hate Sony isn't it?

Even though the PS2 is the main casual machine, it still has some games on it that are great, but I'm not gonna list them 'cos ANY game can be shat on if you're in the right mindset (Hence my thread: "TIP: Don't post massive lists of games!")

And now that Sony is gonna lose to MS (I'm a PS fan but I know it'll happen), people think that they'll somehow be saved by MS!?! MS is BIGGER BY FAR than Sony, that's how they'll win the market, so they'll just turn the game market even more corporate! And since they're the biggest, no-one will be able to challenge them, so it'll be gone forever! Another slice of the universe controlled by MS! And then we'll all probably start to hate them as much as you all hate Sony just now...apart from those of us that work for them, Jacob! ;)

...which is why I keep saying, competition is GOOD! I hope Sony doesn't die, just in case there's a chance that they can keep nipping at MS so no-one rests on their laurels and starts using their domination to overcharge us, the gamer...

Yes, Sony STARTED the destruction, but MS will make it COMPLETE!

**I actually think the DC has better graphics than most PS2 stuff as well...

MS are very corporate people but I like them. They're newbies to the games market so they listen and try to serve the gamers while also making money(or losing, rather ;)). But SONY!!(GOD I f**king hate them - sorry, just had to say that) is just arrogant beyond belief. They spend practically all of E3 rubbing it in - that somehow they were "better" with their inferior technology and tiresome sequels year in year out(EA is mostly to blame of this). Yes Sony does(very rarely) innovate(Eye Toy), but in the end all they want is for every gamer in the world to sit down every Xmas playing Fifa/Madden *fix year here* or WWE Smackdown *insert popular catchphase* or all the crap games based on the next big licence(WOOOOO).

Sony is not leading this industry to destruction(heck, if anything Sony made it more "hip"), but what Sony is doing is getting rid of the very things that made this industry so special in the first place. Things, marvellous things like the next Treasure/SNK 2D wonders, or the brilliant points of innovation from Nintendo/Sega/others, or the fantastically quirky titles from Japan. Or even the next Shenmue... THAT, is where Sony are overstepping the mark and using their market share to turn something so fantastic and original into disposable massmedia entertainment. Dammit if Sony dies the most horrible death imaginable then I'd be so f**king happy and sing a song and get naked(j/k), but for long as there are casual gamers wanting their next big hip piece of licenced junk and boring sequels, their tyranny shall continue...

But that's what I thought he was defining as "destruction", i.e. gaming being hip promotes sequelitis for the casual gamers who play wrestling and football games, thereby squashing the actual gems like Jet Set Radio, Shenmue etc? (As a rough generalisation)

but what Sony is doing is getting rid of the very things that made this industry so special in the first place. Things, marvellous things like the next Treasure/SNK 2D wonders, or the brilliant points of innovation from Nintendo/Sega/others, or the fantastically quirky titles from Japan. See, we're thinking the same thing! I'd define that as the sort of destruction that the author of this thread was on about! It's almost exactly the same as I just said in the paragraph above the one above this one, just that you're using different games/products where I used Jet Set Radio and Shenmue...

THAT, is where Sony are overstepping the mark and using their market share to turn something so fantastic and original into disposable massmedia entertainment.

NOW we can start disagreeing! lol! MS do serve the gamers, but they're currently chasing the #1 spot so they HAVE to do something, when they're in control I bet all those nice little cool niche products and innovation get even less...

Dammit if Sony dies the most horrible death imaginable then I'd be so f**king happy and sing a song and get naked(j/k),

They will, in the console wars at least, but that's the day MS has total control and can do WTF they like with next to no bad effects, which is why the hell I keep saying COMPETITION IS GOOD! For fuck's sake!! :shock:lol!

but for long as there are casual gamers wanting their next big hip piece of licenced junk and boring sequels, their tyranny shall continue...

Sony's "tyranny"(sic) won't continue, MS will be in front. They do it with everything else...

MS will need casuals to get to #1 though, 'cos there are more casual than hardcore gamers, so they'll need all those crap games you dislike...? and even if they price Sony out of the market, when they do have the biggest share the crap games will only follow the Xbox, since like you said it's not the console's fault, it's the publisher's like EA...

Maybe we should be glad the Xbox is doing well but not @ #1, at least that way the casual targetted stuff isn't there!?

Hmm... St Elmo's Fire you have some good points. I agree that when MS gets in front then they may start acting like corporate gayheads, but until then we won't know. From what I know, at the moment MS are friendly beyond belief to developers - their understanding of Bungie's mission to make Halo 2 as good as it can possibly be has lead to the delayed Q1 2004 release date. You think MS would want a killer app as giagantic as Halo 2 to miss the fat XMas frenzy period? Of course not.

Then there comes BC and Fable, two hugely promising and ambitious titles that have already been delayed by half a year now, and believe me they are not likely to come out this fiscal year. Projects as ambitious as the aforementioned two will undoubtedly be very costly but MS still carries on supporting and understanding.

There's also Rare. After coughing up a ridiculous $375mil for the talented British developers, MS lets Rare do whatever the heck they want! They may be very original ideas but you think Kameo and Grabbed by the Goulies are gonna sell big? Not a ghost of a chance! If all MS wanted was to become market leader asap(i.e. by selling loadsa games), then wouldn't they have forced Rare to immediately start Perfect Dark Zero?

I'm not saying its the best turnout if MS became the leader(Heck I want Sega to make a comback!). But from what I've seen up until now, they're a hell lot better than those blood sucking vampires at Sony!! And yes competition is a good thing, games get better as a result of competition and prices remain low. You've only got to take a look at the ridiculous GBA prices to see this fact(though GBA does have brilliant games).

I got to the bit where you wrote "gayheads" and laughed tea on the keyboard!

Thanks for saying I had good points, you made some too and I'm glad this hasn't descended into abuse!

Believe it or not I actually own an Xbox over a PS2, but I don't think the PS2 is actually that bad, I bought the Xbox mostly 'cos it was cheaper and had a reputation for reliability (Then broke 3 weeks later...), those eye-watering £28 memory cards were a big factor too, actually...

But yeah I hope that Rare starts doing stuff as good again as they did in their Nintendo prime, I'd love to go out and buy some REAL killer apps for the Xbox the likes of which make me can't wait to get home, it's been too long since I bought a game like that...

I Agree with you all... St. Elmo's Fire, since the time you stood up
for sony as you said, you've wisen. Personally i feel sad that Sega
left the hardware industry. but as FoxHound said, Sega made mistakes that bit them in the ass. It was inevitable. And i hate
Nintendo. Of course they are good, But their downfall acctualy
began in 1988 when they made a deal with Sony for the SNES
CD-ROM a.k.a. The Nintendo Playstation. Then Nintendo betrayed
Sony, and Sony turned their SNES Add-On into the Sony Playstation.
Nintendo did this to themsleves.

I don't think this thread got anywhere near abuse as we're all just having an intelligent debate about Sony and the games industry. :)

I'm interested to see what Rare can pull off with the innovative looking Kameo and especially Grabbed by the Goulies, which looks like its designed for eight year olds, but I shall remain open-minded. However, ultimately along with every other Rare fan, I am feverishly anticipating Perfect Dark Zero. I absolutely loved Goldeneye and PD so I'm simply can't wait to see what they can achieve with technology as powerful as XBox. PD was an astounding technical achievement for the legacyware that was the n64.

If you are looking for some great XBox games to play, then I highly recommend Panzer Dragoon Orta, JSRF, Crazy Taxi 3 and Shenmue II. There's obviously also the ones which you may have already played like Halo, PGR and DOA3.

Do you have a GCN? Because in my opinion GCN actually has a slight edge over XBox. Nintendo, despite their troubles still churns out game after game that are just utterly spellbinding beyond words. Though you probably already know all the top GCN titles.

LinuxManiac, what you are saying is sad but all true. The Sony and Square sagas are certainly two of the biggest influences to Nintendo's fall from grace. Nintendo are still making mistakes, one of many examples is pulling the brilliant Animal Crossing from its PAL release schedule. But hopefully they can learn and change enough to survive, and perhaps maybe even make a comeback(same goes for Sega).

Postby Shodan » Sun Jun 22, 2003 6:15 pm

I don't think MS will be worse. In fact I don't even think MS will ever be market leaders b/c Sony is never going to f**king move out of the way. They will always use their cheap hype and savvy maketing techniques to woo the mainstream to buy their crap. See, the cheating b*stards that are Sony always will have this year and half headstart on everyone. We are already drowning in Ps3 rumors/hype and its only mid 03. According to MS the XBox 2 isn't due in Japan until 2006!!!(I can't imagine the North American date being that much earlier.) Plus the fact that there is VERY little info regarding XBox 2. And Nintendo? Bah! They are "saying" they will launch at the same time as the competition but then again, before the codename "Dolphin" came to be, the GCN was known as Project N2000. ;)

wtf are you talking about the dc is more powerful graphically then ps2

Dreamcast can calculate something like 13 million triangles a sec with its power vr series 2 and no effects turned on where as ps2 can do something like 66 million triangles a sec with no effects turned on.
